I know I've mentioned this author before but I'd really like to plug Susan Choi's American Woman. A political novel is a hard sell, I know, but this one is luminous. The American political landscape seems so polarized at the moment - might be good to read an intelligent treatment of the forces that lead to radicalization. This one takes place in the mid 1970s, long enough ago for us to be objective, recently enough to be in living memory.

Just my two cents!

As soon as Dirty Love by Andre Dubus III comes out in paperback -- June 2014 -- let's schedule it. I'm reading it now, and it's one of the best books I've read this year. It consists of 4 linked novellas, brilliantly written, deeply psychological. The theme is love: how people find it and lose it, what it means to them, what it makes them do. Riveting.

Sounds good, Joan. Andre is a dear friend of my cousin Cheryl, and I've met him at family gatherings. He will be so pleased we will read it. I spoke after him at my great aunt's funeral, and felt just a little intimidated, as he has such a way with words. I don't know if his dad taught at Emerson, where I went. Small world.

did you like it, Janine? It was one of my favorite books of last year - that and Cool Gray City of Love but that's nonfiction.

Just finished My Education by Susan Choi
I listened to most of it on Books on CD from the library, but it didn't hold my interest to finish it. I had high hopes for it, but the constant histrionics were so annoying that I didn't want to keep listening.

Who else read this book?

It's in paperback now -- Here's the Amazon link. At tomorrow's (6/29/14) meeting, I'll be lobbying for it to be scheduled as our September book. I just re-read it, and it's one of my favorite books this year. Some reviews:
