Nyeek Drinks: Gamers' Games (21+)

Just a reminder you can always play whatever you want at Nyeek; spotlight just means a particular type of game we focus on for that night.

SPOTLIGHT: GAMERS' GAMES

Gamers' Games - After the gateway games, you got hooked to the heavier stuff. Power Grid, Puerto Rico, Agricola, Battlestar Galactica, Dominant Species, Eclipse, Traders of Genoa. With games like these it's important to have someone who really knows the rules. You can be that person and at the same time hopefully get someone else to fall in love with one of your favorite games.

If you want to teach a gamers' game please mention it in the comments!

WHAT IS NYEEK?

Nyeek (pronounced neek) is a weekly gathering where you can come and explore the awesome world of board games.  We meet every Monday and alternate between Amity Hall and Think Coffee for events.

WHAT TYPE OF GAMES DO YOU PLAY?

Most people who come enjoy a wide spectrum of games, but we usually focus on a particular type called Euro Games.  Geek Coffee is a social event so we encourage games that are less than two hours.  Games like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Bohnanza, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, For Sale, etc. etc...

I’VE NEVER PLAYED THESE GAMES BEFORE!  WILL I ENJOY THEM?

If you enjoy traditional board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk) you’ll probably enjoy these games as well.  You might even enjoy them more.  Not every game is the same, but they usually have simple rules, multiple players, relatively short playing times, and no player elimination, so they’re pretty accessible to newcomers.

WHAT IF I WANT TO PLAY HEAVIER GAMES?

I encourage light to medium weight games with short playing times to make Geek Coffee an event for everyone.  If there’s a heavier game you want to play use the comment space below to get people interested and shoot them a link to the rules (boardgamegeek.com usually has them) before hand.

IS THIS A FREE EVENT?

Ye, but I will say there is an unofficial cover charge as I ask everyone who comes to buy something from the establishment that is hosting.

I WANT TO COME, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE EVENT IS FULL?

If you want to come, but the event is full just join the waiting list.  Usually there’s at least a couple of people who have something come up at the last minute.  If an opening pops up you’ll get an e-mail and you can snag up their spot!

DO I NEED TO BRING GAMES?

No, there's usually more than enough, but of course it's encouraged!  If you do bring games keep the following thing in mind though.

1.  Try and have the rules down pat before you bring it. You'll probably be the one explaining them!

2. Try and bring games that are under two hours ideally.  If the game is over two hours long try and get people interested beforehand.

3. Try to bring light to medium weight games. No Twilight Imperium or Die Macher. Extreme examples but you get my drift!

Cheers, hope to see ya there!

Good games of 7 Wonders and King of Tokyo ( where my monster never proved victorious) and played Coup for the first time.

Another great night learned Condottiere and Illuminati (both good fun with good teachers). Showed a few people Resistance. Still have yet to play some others I've wanted to, but I know I will eventually get to.

    Another successful Fiasco!

Would anyone be interested in playing some Illuminati? I'd have to go dig out my old copy. Also would anyone be interested in Cosmic Encounter (recent reprint)? I doubt I can fit both in my bag the same nite but curious if anyone would want to play either or both.

Actually I never played it so. Yea :-)

I'll bring Cosmic next week, should interest remain.

Trying to take care of some last minute stuff. Might be there at 6.15. As proof as how rushed I am I will be wearing two different colored socks.

So I'm bringing Risk's grumpy cousin, Small World, and I'll be in around 630 for anyone interested!

In keeping with the theme of the evening I would like to offer to teach Tigris and Euphrates if anyone is curious. Let me know if you're interested, so I can decide whether or not I should bring it.

Cool, well it looks like I'm dedicated to a game for the start of the night. Would around nine-ish be too late for you guys to play? It might take up to two hours to play?

      February 11, 2013

    • James

Hey, dudes I apologize, but I just realized my copy of Tigris & Euphrates is at Think. I left it there, back when I was in more pain after the surgery.

Hello everyone! I am interested in attending to tonight's Meetup but I am new to this process and do not know how to secure the spot. Is it only by making the suggested donation online?

    February 11, 2013

James, so what exactly do I have to do now that I got an opening alert for tonight?

      February 11, 2013

    • James

Basically you've got to rush back here and RSVP for the event. It can be tricky, because anyone can do it. That's why signing up early is recommended. Keep trying, but if you don't make it you're already signed up for the next one.

Does anyone want to play star trek catan?

    February 11, 2013

I just received my copy of the Fiasco Companion book, so I'm definitely hoping to get another game going early Monday evening. I'll be at the table by the coat rack playing filler games until 6:30 or so, then it's time for a Fiasco!

    February 7, 2013

    • David B

So is anyone up for an early game of Fiasco tonight?

      February 11, 2013

    • James

In general I would be, but I think I'm dedicated to Risk: Legacy tonight.

      February 11, 2013

  • Eddie R.

I'd like to come down and spend the evening there but does anyone know a really inexpensive place to spend the night? I'm up in Putnam Valley (about 45 mins).

Sorry I can't make it today. Too much homework for school. This frees up two spots.

Anybody interested in a game of Space Empires 4x? It is a medium complexity space conquest game. Rules are here: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-317-space-empires.aspx
    BGG site: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/84419/space-empires-4x

2-4 people can play. I'd be happy to teach new people.

If time permits, I'd love to give this a try as well.

I really want to come, but I've never played in these games, except Monopoly

    February 5, 2013

    • Jason K.

And you can be sure that all the games are more fun than monopoly! "Monopoly. The board game that makes people hate board games."
