Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition (AKA Do You Have 8 hours To Play One Game?)

  • August 25, 2013 · 11:00 AM

EDIT:  I changed the date so we wouldn't clash with Brooklyn game night.  The new date is the 25th.  There seems to be enough interest for two games, so I'm expanding the RSVP list to 12 people.  Meaning we will need two hosts, but the comments page seems to suggest that this is very doable.  Once we get 12 people we will figure out where the two games will be hosted.  If you RSVP expect to get an e-mail two days before asking you to confirm that you are still playing.  Let's do this!

Ok, so this is a kind of an unusual event in as far that it has a pretty small RSVP list.  I also wanted to see in general how many people would be interested in playing Twilight in the future.  Feel free to make comments even if you can't attend this event!

  Anyways here's the rub...

Twilight Imperium is such an epic game that it actually launched an entire company.  You know Fantasty Flight Games?  The guys who publish Android: Netrunner, Battlestar Galactica, A Game of Thrones, Star Wars: X-Wings Miniatures, Arkaham Horror and Cosmic Encounter?  Those guys use to be be Fantasy Flight Publishing and they use to publish European comics.   In 1997 though the founder created and released a game called Twilight Imperium and BOOM they've been a game company ever since and it's worked out pretty well for them.

That game is now on it's third edtion and it's pretty freaking epic.  You explore the universe, you build space fleets, you make treaties with some neighbors, attack others, you take over planets, you improve your technology, you fulfill agendas, and you plan future moves carefully.  It's long, but fun and feels like you're playing a space opera.

Sounds cool?  Nice then let's play!  A couple of things though...

1). I want people to learn and play this game.  I will provide a link to the rules, but for people they can be a bit overwhelming.  RELAX.  I'm going to ask that everyone who plays to please read them beforehand, but if one or two things don't make sense IT'S NOT BIG DEAL.  If you want to play you should play and as long as you're into the game I will be happy to answer questions during the game.  First game is a learning game.

Reading the rules will help out a ton though and I will ask everyone who wants to play to do it at least once before the game...

  http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/Twilight%20Imperium%203/ti3rules.pdf

2).  It's a long game.  With new players let's say it could be 8 hours.  If we have our shit together we could maybe bring it down to 7 or even 6.  If you can't hang for 8 hours though you should probably pass.

3.)  We need to find a place to place to play this bad boy.  I would offer my apartment, but in all honesty my kitchen table isn't big enough.  We'll work something out though.

That's about it.  If you're down let know!

This one is all booked, but if this becomes an occasional thing, just offering that i could host both games at my place. I have two five foot tables. I am about 15 minutes from midtown on the E or F.

We found a place! Last minute shenigans.

Hey, Karen, I'm planning another Twilight game. If you wanted to host I would actually be willing to just DM.

Hey, I feel bad that the second game feel through. If anybody who didn't get in the first game wants to play this coming Sunday or Monday please let me know and I'll set up a game.

    August 27, 2013

    • Mike L.

I would do this Sunday. Monday is always sort of tough for that sort of comitment.

I can't make it this week, unfortunately.

As I mentioned before, I live in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, a block away from the 2-5 train at Winthrop street. It's about 15-20 minutes from Atlantic Ave./Barclays Center.

My table is definitely not that big. But I have lots of little side tables to put non-board stuff on (for example, to keep the strategy cards or snacks/drinks on). We might not be able to spread out our pieces as luxuriously as they do on that table, but I'm sure we can make it work.

No problem, the hope next time it works out.

Really great time playing TI with you guys. It is definitely now one if my top 5 favorite board games. James, thanks for setting everything up!

I can host a game @ 333 Rector Place, Battery Park, Manhattan. Please reply to this comment if you want to be in on this game. I do not own TI3 so someone else must bring it.

Sorry am lost ... did not read this page for a whole week (work you know ...). Which game can I join !?

    August 23, 2013

    • Jesse D.

Does my place work for you? It looks like the only open game.

      August 24, 2013

  • Matt S.

I can't host, but I have the game and both expansions I'd be happy to lug around if it means I could get a game in!

    August 21, 2013

    • Jesse D.

Hey Matt, it looks like you'd be able to get in on the game at my place, down in Brooklyn. If that works, let us know by replying to my comment describing where I am.

      August 23, 2013

    • Matt S.

Hey Jesse, I can't make it this weekend (or the next two - recovering from shoulder surgery); definitely in for a game after that!

I've been reading through the manual, and found this to be helpful: http://www.reddit.com/r/twilightimperium/comments/xp0mu/advice_for_new_players/

    Just kidding it works now

  • James

So it looks like we probably have the space we need and the players. We just need to try and get stuff in order. I think we have two people offering to host; Jesse and Leo. If you guys wouldn't mind posting separate comments (ie don't just reply to this one), so people can say which apt they would prefer to go to I think that would be best. Once a comment gets six people then that game is full. Before you guys offer your space though check out this pic of a game and make sure you have the same amount of table space (or close to it.) http://boardgamegeek.com/image/134932/twilight-imperium-third-edition?size=large

The link you posted for rules is not working. Is there somewhere else we can do some light reading?

Is this true for everyone? It's working on my computer. Anyways here's another link! http://www.fantasyfli...

It works for me. Also, is anyone else able to host? It looks like we still need another table.

My husband and I would love to learn how to play TI3!!

    August 19, 2013

  • Ian

I realized I had volunteered my place but not actually RSVP'd on this.

Anyways, James are you going to change the date since this conflicts with the beer hall day?

    August 14, 2013

    • Ian

this takes like 8 hours and a huge amount of space, beer hall may not be best venue

      August 14, 2013

    • James

We have the space. I just preferred to keep the two events on separate weekends. Also, I like the beer hall a lot, but I am not down to play an 8 hour game there.

      August 15, 2013

  • James

I want to make one thread for people offering to host. Once we get 12 people on the RSVP list we can figure out what's convenient for everybody. Please reply to this comment to offer to host. I know some of you have already, but I just changed the date, so I don't know if all those offers stand.

    August 14, 2013

    • Jesse D.

I should probably mention that I've only played half a game once, a long time ago, so we'd need someone experienced to teach the game... and someone with a copy of the game.

      August 14, 2013

    • Mike L.

I played a lot of TI, but not 3. I don't know how much has changed.

      August 15, 2013

  • Justin U.

Oh, I think I can play on the new date...exciting!

Arrggg, with the expanded RSVP number we would have loved to have made it, but the 25th is the same weekend as RetCon on Long Island now. (3 day board game Convention right here on Long Island) :(

Hope it's a big success and we get another date soon to follow!

I will be out of town this date. I'd be happy to host another time.

    August 14, 2013

  • Jesse D.

So into this. I've been wanting to play TI3 for a long time. If I don't make it into the game, count me in for a future game.

    August 12, 2013

    • Jesse D.

P.S. if I manage to get into the game, or more likely for a future game, I believe my table is big enough. I live in Lefferts Garden, which - Depending on how many Brooklynites/Greenwich Villagers there are playing - could be more convenient than Fedor or Ian's place.

      August 12, 2013

  • Mike L.

I've actually played this game in less then 4 hours. But all of us had played at least 3 or 4 times. Its a trial, but its worth it. Good Luck!

    August 12, 2013

  • Rob R.

I am definitely in for this!

    August 12, 2013

Much apologies for the last minute change of RSVP. I just got my schedule at work this week and found I'm gonna have to work Sunday. I won't be able to make this event, despite how badly I want to do this. =(

I have a copy of game and both expansions. I also technically can and have in the past hosted sessions of this. Sadly for many people my location is not ideal (A train 181street stop.) If I am available for a session I won't mind bringing my own copy, setting up the game and even teaching new players. Unfortunately I won't be able to do this on 18th (will be out of town.) but will keep an eye for the next one. Also there is actually TI3 Mailing list still out there, so usually finding interested players is not that difficult. We used to have monthly games in wargaming club until they closed. At the peak of our glory we had two games running in parallel one 8 players and one 5 players. Those where good times :) I know a lot of people from that group are here as well...

Finding good location for this is main problem. Long hours and huge table requirements are not easy to fulfill in my experience :(

Fedor is the reigning expert on Twilight Imperium and you guys should try and get him in on this. He is a real asset as he has every rule memorized and can help keep the game moving.

    Hi everyone,

I was talking to James and he does not yet have a venue for this.

I would like to volunteer my apartment in East Harlem (108th street, 5 minutes from 6 train stop, or 1 minute from M15 bus stop).

I have enough room to host an up to 8 person game (my dining table is a convertible pool table), an additional 4-6 person game, and possibly another smaller game. So the option would be to do TE plus at least one more spillover game.

I don't have TE but do have Eclipse, Mage Knight, Star Trek Fleet Captains, Agricola, Brass, Castles of Burgandy, etc, etc..

I also make great cocktails, though for that I'd appreciate a donation or an offering of liquor, and there's the best taco place in NYC down the street that delivers.

Let me know if that works for people.

Aggghhh I'm so into this, but I have a dental appointment thing and won't be free til the afternoon.

The pre-built galaxy will save time, but you lose out on creating the galaxy by placing the planet/star hex tiles. One of the best parts of the game.

I've played the game may times. To save time, go back to board game basics: plan your turn ahead of time, and when you execute your turn verbalize what you are doing. Yes, things can change in the interim, before your turn, but it usually works out. And, the large race reference card is your friend. Refer to it often, and VOCALLY declare what you are doing on your turn. This game slows down when players use up a lot of brain space ensuring that everyone else is executing properly.

PS: The expansions allow for an 8-player game. That will lengthen the game significantly.

And, PDS units cost 2, not 1 resource.

There are other misprints and rule clarifications...

I would love to, but I'm going to be in Atlanta that weekend!

    August 3, 2013

Will you be using a pre-built galaxy? I've heard this can shave as much as a full hour off the game and there are a bunch of pre-build maps available in the file section of BGG and on the Fantasy Flight site itself.

If we're going to build the map ourselves, I've heard great things about the "Star by Star" set-up from Shattered Ascension even if you're not going to play with anything else from the expansion.

if you've never played before, make sure to read the rules, the FAQ, and go through the play-through here:
    http://www.preeminent.org/steve/games/ti3/ti3demo/

it will make everything much less confusing and will make the game go much better while you're actually playing.

    August 2, 2013

  • James

Does anybody have another copy of this game in case we end up with enough interest?

    August 2, 2013

  • Justin U.

Hey, I definitely want to play this!...and I don't mind the long play time. Unfortunately I can't this Sunday though. Keep me posted if the date changes or there is ever another one!!
