Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition (AKA Do You Have 8 hours To Play One Game?)

  • Sep 1, 2013 · 1:00 PM

I'll probably re-edit this at some point, but I just wanted anybody who was interested to know that I would be down for another beginner's game of Twilight Imperium this Sunday.  I feel bad because a lot of guys couldn't get in the last one game.  I'm trying to get all newbies for this game, but if you played last game and want to sign up feel free to.  If we fill up I'll just bump you.  :-)

Ok, so this is a kind of an unusual event in as far that it has a pretty small RSVP list.  I also wanted to see in general how many people would be interested in playing Twilight in the future.  Feel free to make comments even if you can't attend this event!

  Anyways here's the rub...

Twilight Imperium is such an epic game that it actually launched an entire company.  You know Fantasty Flight Games?  The guys who publish Android: Netrunner, Battlestar Galactica, A Game of Thrones, Star Wars: X-Wings Miniatures, Arkaham Horror and Cosmic Encounter?  Those guys use to be be Fantasy Flight Publishing and they use to publish European comics.   In 1997 though the founder created and released a game called Twilight Imperium and BOOM they've been a game company ever since and it's worked out pretty well for them.

That game is now on it's third edtion and it's pretty freaking epic.  You explore the universe, you build space fleets, you make treaties with some neighbors, attack others, you take over planets, you improve your technology, you fulfill agendas, and you plan future moves carefully.  It's long, but fun and feels like you're playing a space opera.

Sounds cool?  Nice then let's play!  A couple of things though...

1). I want people to learn and play this game.  I will provide a link to the rules, but for people they can be a bit overwhelming.  RELAX.  I'm going to ask that everyone who plays to please read them beforehand, but if one or two things don't make sense IT'S NOT BIG DEAL.  If you want to play you should play and as long as you're into the game I will be happy to answer questions during the game.  First game is a learning game.

Reading the rules will help out a ton though and I will ask everyone who wants to play to do it at least once before the game...

  http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/Twilight%20Imperium%203/ti3rules.pdf

2).  It's a long game.  With new players let's say it could be 8 hours.  If we have our shit together we could maybe bring it down to 7 or even 6.  If you can't hang for 8 hours though you should probably pass.

3.)  We need to find a place to place to play this bad boy.  I would offer my apartment, but in all honesty my kitchen table isn't big enough.  We'll work something out though.

That's about it.  If you're down let know!

Yeah, I felt like the Little Prince with my precious rose on one planet. Good game, everyone and thanks, patient James for teaching another crew. Now that there's a dozen or so who have played, future games will be smooth sailing, ha!

I was so close with my fleet of dreadnaughts, but the lone warrior victory was epic. Well played Karen.

Had a great time. Thanks James, Karen, and everyone who played. Karen managed to pull out a win even with basically everyone else going after her with their War Suns, Deadnoughts, and everything..

apologies, need to drop out at the last minute

Hi all, for time estimates, the train is 20 minutes from midtown on the E or F or 7 train (Roosevelt Avenue, not Roosevelt Island) and it's a 5 minute walk (north east). Ring 1+405 fat the lobby door. Bike is OK, I have bike room in basement. There is a supermarket on the corner, deli and loads of take out nearby. See you all at 1 !

hmmm, ok now that I have the address was snooping around street view and looking for paid lots too and it doesn't look great. Guess you should replace me.

      August 31, 2013

    • James

Ok, bummer. You don't have to wait for me though. You should be able to change your own RSVP?

      August 31, 2013

  • phantommenace25

I am coming via train. I should arive by noon depending on how far from the train it is.
Please send me the address, I am looking forward to playing this game.

Hi James, got your message.....Leo is organizing the same game for Sunday with the Queens gamers (yes, we exist!) and I was thinking of playing that. If we have both at my place then you can play too. Pertinent info: It is Roosevelt Ave stop on E/F/R/7 and I have two cats.

I prefer later too. I hate getting up early. What I need to know though is what is the parking situation there?

      August 31, 2013

    • James

12 or 1 should be fine. Which do you prefer? Would it be okay if I came a half a hour earlier to set stuff up?

      August 31, 2013

  • Matt S.

I'm in one weekend, and I have the game with all expansions. I won't be able to carry it for a few more weeks since I just had shoulder surgery, though.

    August 29, 2013

    • Leo P.

Matt, I'm hosting a game of TI3 this Sunday. You don't have to bring the game out since we have a copy already. If you are well enough to bring yourself out, you're welcome to join us.

      August 30, 2013

    • Matt S.

This weekend is probably a no-go because I can't guarantee I can make it through a whole session with my shoulder. I will definitely make it one week, though.

      August 30, 2013

  • Jacob J.

The game sounds awesome. But, full with no waitlist?

    August 29, 2013

    • James

      Opened up wait list.

      August 30, 2013

  • Seth

This game definitely demands privacy, I don't think a public space is practical.

    August 30, 2013

    • James

I had my doubts, but Whole Foods worked out pretty well last week. That having been said I am looking for a private space.

      August 30, 2013

  • Jason K.

Btw I'd offer my house but I doubt anyone wants to take the >1hr train ride from manhattan.

    August 30, 2013

  • Leo P.

I'm also hosting a game of Twilight Imperium 3 this Sunday. As of right now I still have space for 3 more if anyone wants to join in.

Yes we're also noob friendly. My first game was last weekend. But like, James, I'd ask that you read through the rules at least once before the game.

      August 30, 2013

    • Jacob J.

      OK!

      August 30, 2013

  • Jacob J.

I can come and could possibly host it either at my apartment (how big does the table need to be?) or in the social room in my building (no reservations accepted, so the room is always open to all residents; but it also means we can't exclude other people from being in the room).

    August 29, 2013

  • phantommenace25

This sounds fun. I never played though

    August 29, 2013

Kind of depends on where it is since I'd be driving from NJ. Hitting attend for now.

    August 29, 2013

  • Mike L.

Plans are already made and I am out of town. Next time!

    August 29, 2013

  • Justin U.

    Arrrrggh...I'll be moving on Sunday

    August 29, 2013

I can't make this one but I'm definitely down for the next one.
