Nyeek Drinks: Gateway Game Night (21+)

Just a reminder you can always play whatever you want at Nyeek; spotlight just means a particular type of game we focus on for that night.

SPOTLIGHT: GATEWAY GAMES

Games you played when you started playing boardgames. Easy to teach, but just enough depth to keep them interesting. A night where you can bring someone new to boardgames and hopefully make them see that your hobby isn't as weird as they think.

If you want to teach a gateway game please mention it in the comments. If you don't have a copy I can probably loan you one.

Some examples include: Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Bohnanza, Alhambra, Blokus, Ra, Zooloretto, Pandemic, Forbidden Island, etc. etc...

WHAT IS NYEEK?

Nyeek (pronounced neek) is a weekly gathering where you can come and explore the awesome world of board games. We meet every Monday and alternate between Amity Hall and Think Coffee for events.

WHAT TYPE OF GAMES DO YOU PLAY?

Most people who come enjoy a wide spectrum of games, but we usually focus on a particular type called Euro Games. Geek Coffee is a social event so we encourage games that are less than two hours. Games like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Bohnanza, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, For Sale, etc. etc...

I’VE NEVER PLAYED THESE GAMES BEFORE! WILL I ENJOY THEM?

If you enjoy traditional board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk) you’ll probably enjoy these games as well. You might even enjoy them more. Not every game is the same, but they usually have simple rules, multiple players, relatively short playing times, and no player elimination, so they’re pretty accessible to newcomers.

WHAT IF I WANT TO PLAY HEAVIER GAMES?

I encourage light to medium weight games with short playing times to make Geek Coffee an event for everyone. If there’s a heavier game you want to play use the comment space below to get people interested and shoot them a link to the rules (boardgamegeek.com usually has them) before hand.

IS THIS A FREE EVENT?

Ye, but I will say there is an unofficial cover charge as I ask everyone who comes to buy something from the establishment that is hosting.

I WANT TO COME, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE EVENT IS FULL?

If you want to come, but the event is full just join the waiting list. Usually there’s at least a couple of people who have something come up at the last minute. If an opening pops up you’ll get an e-mail and you can snag up their spot!

DO I NEED TO BRING GAMES?

No, there's usually more than enough, but of course it's encouraged! If you do bring games keep the following thing in mind though.

1. Try and have the rules down pat before you bring it. You'll probably be the one explaining them!

2. Try and bring games that are under two hours ideally. If the game is over two hours long try and get people interested beforehand.

3. Try to bring light to medium weight games. No Twilight Imperium or Die Macher. Extreme examples but you get my drift!

Cheers, hope to see ya there!

I'd like to play Cosmic Encounters but have never had a chance to play it before. I have the late 2012 printing plus the first expansion from Fantasy Flight. Would anyone else want to play despite not having gone through it before?

I have a long list of games I can teach by-the-by. Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Bohnaza, Carcassonne, Flash Point, Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Modern Art...

If anybody has any particular interest in learning a game let me know and I'll bring it.

Hey, CJ if you still want to play Pandemic I'm down. I'll be in a blue plaid shirt and kind of retro glasses. If you let me know what time you'll be there I'll try to make myself available. Otherwise I might be in another game, but even if that's the case we can still get a game going somehow.

Hey dudes! Hope to see all y'all tonight. Looks like there may be a decent amount of people so feel free to bring a board game to teach if you want. Might be a few newcomers!

Does anyone have Munchkin? I played it a few years ago, but forget the rules.

    December 3, 2012

    • James

I actually posted this on the Reddit Meetup as well and someone mentioned they would be bringing Munchkin. So it should be there.
