Nyeek Drinks: Board Game Night (+21)

WHAT IS NYEEK?

Nyeek (pronounced neek) is a weekly gathering where you can come and explore the awesome world of board games.  We meet every Monday and alternate between Amity Hall and Think Coffee for events.

WHAT TYPE OF GAMES DO YOU PLAY?

Most people who come enjoy a wide spectrum of games, but we usually focus on a particular type called Euro Games.  Geek Coffee is a social event so we encourage games that are less than two hours.  Games like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Bohnanza, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, For Sale, etc. etc...

I’VE NEVER PLAYED THESE GAMES BEFORE!  WILL I ENJOY THEM?

If you enjoy traditional board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk) you’ll probably enjoy these games as well.  You might even enjoy them more.  Not every game is the same, but they usually have simple rules, multiple players, relatively short playing times, and no player elimination, so they’re pretty accessible to newcomers.

WHAT IF I WANT TO PLAY HEAVIER GAMES?

I encourage light to medium weight games with short playing times to make Geek Coffee an event for everyone.  If there’s a heavier game you want to play use the comment space below to get people interested and shoot them a link to the rules (boardgamegeek.com usually has them) before hand.

IS THIS A FREE EVENT?

Ye, but I will say there is an unofficial cover charge as I ask everyone who comes to buy something from the establishment that is hosting.

I WANT TO COME, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE EVENT IS FULL?

If you want to come, but the event is full just join the waiting list.  Usually there’s at least a couple of people who have something come up at the last minute.  If an opening pops up you’ll get an e-mail and you can snag up their spot!

DO I NEED TO BRING GAMES?

No, there's usually more than enough, but of course it's encouraged!  If you do bring games keep the following thing in mind though.

1.  Try and have the rules down pat before you bring it. You'll probably be the one explaining them!

2. Try and bring games that are under two hours ideally.  If the game is over two hours long try and get people interested beforehand.

3. Try to bring light to medium weight games. No Twilight Imperium or Die Macher. Extreme examples but you get my drift!

Cheers, hope to see ya there!

Someone left their "Ascension : Storm of Souls" board. I have it in my possession at the moment, I will bring it in next week so it can return to its rightful owner.

Hey Sid. Thank you for grabbing that. I had a feeling I left something behind. Were you playing the temple escape game last night?

      January 2, 2013

    • Sid M.

      Yes.

I reckon this might be a little late, but how did everything go for this meetup? I felt a little weird with there not being an official host. Did everything go smoothly?

We had to shut down earlier than normal, but games were played, fun was had.

Well, no promises, but it looks like there should be more than enough games for tonight.

Also a reminder that they do close the upstairs at midnight! The bar is actually open till 2 AM, but you have to go downstairs. So if you're starting a game that might go past midnight consider starting downstairs.

I'll be with you guys in spirit. I'll actually be playing board games with some of my original gaming buddies in my hometown!

Looks like I got myself sick too. I'm not going to make it this week. I'll look forward to coming next week though.

I'm also a first time attendee. I plan on bringing a load of games: Alhambra and Settlers both with a handful of expansions plus some other mid-light-weight games. I can help help teach anybody new to these games and look forward to meeting everyone.

Assuming I go, I'll bring Resistance, Avalon, Coup, Saboteur + Saboteur 2, and possibly Munchkin Deluxe if I'm motivated to carry a bigger box game that I don't actually play.

    December 31, 2012

    • JN

Cool, it wasn't specified so thanks for letting me know.

      December 31, 2012

    • Aaron

sorry, in my mind regular & deluxe is the same thing, just convenience of a level & sex tracker i could have been more specific

  • James

So, you'll probably get a email about this as well, but I've decided to move the game night to Amity Hall just to make things simpler. If you've never been it's a pretty convenient location as well that's also in Greenwich Village. Check it out on the map.

I think the best way to think about this game night is as a board game pot luck. I won't be there with my big bag of games, but I do know that other people will bring games. If you're coming it probably wouldn't hurt to bring a game though. And if you are feel free to mention it below to let people know what you're bringing.

  • Eugene

I'll probably sit this one out, but be in for the next one

    December 30, 2012

  • Sid M.

What will it take to save this meetup?

    December 28, 2012

    • James

      I'm on it buddy!

      December 28, 2012

  • James

Hey, dudes and dudettes! One thing I should probably say is that I'll actually still be in North Carolina for this Geek Coffee. I'm going to try and find someone (or more than one person) to take over host duties. It seems like it would be a shame to cancel, so I'll figure this out. It just might be more of a loosey goosey meetup. I'll definitely be back for Nyeek Drinks and look forward to playing some games again! Hope you're all having happy holidays!
