Fullertonians and Others Greet
Rumsfeld in Newport Beach

by T. DeMoss Photos by Martin Hill

On November 17, 2007, Fullertonians
joined others standing outside the entrance
to the Island Hotel in Newport Beach to
greet Donald H. Rumsfeld. The former
Secretary of Defense was attending the 20th
Annual Sir Winston S. Churchill Dinner
where he was being honored with the
Claremont Institute?s Statesmanship Award.
The Claremont Institute is a conservative
think tank whose mission is to ?restore the
principles of the American Founding to
their rightful, preeminent authority in our
national life.?

The Fullertonians and others (whom were
directed by the Secret Service to stay on the
curbside) stood in the chilly air holding various
signs that conveyed heartfelt messages
for Mr. Rumsfeld, such as ?Donald
Rumsfeld = War Criminal.? Other signs
read ?My Country does not honor war criminals?
and ?If you give an award to a war
criminal, what does that make you?? As limousines
and other vehicles transporting the
Churchill Dinner participants turned onto
the entrance, some of the greeters shouted
out slogans. Most of the vehicle windows
were dark and rolled up; however, a couple
of occupants, who had the windows down,
shouted back.

?We?re staging a protest here against
Rumsfeld and the Claremont Institute for
picking Rumsfeld for the Statesmanship
Award,? said Mr. Hilderbrand, a Fullerton
resident. ?It?s clear that Rumsfeld, as a
member of the Project for the New
American Century wanted to invade Iraq
prior to 9/11 and seize the oil reserves
there.?

Mr. Hilderbrand is referring to a controversial
report titled ?Rebuilding America?s
Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources for a
New Century? that the PNAC published in
September 2000 and that was signed by Mr.
Rumsfeld. The PNAC is an American neoconservative
think tank whose stated goal is
to promote American global leadership,
which they view is ?both good for America
and good for the world.?

One man, who held a Gadsden flag (the
1775 ?Liberty or Death, Don?t Tread on Me?
flag of the American Revolution) recited a
statement found in the ?Rebuilding
America?s Defenses? document: ?Further,
the process of transformation is likely to be a
long one unless there is a catastrophic and
catalyzing event?like a new Pearl Harbor.?
(This statement can be found on page 51.)
?It?s all about building up America?s military
and projecting it across the globe in full
spectrum dominance,? said the Gadsden flag
holder. ?This document implies that a massive
terror attack against the United States
would help project the military across the
globe and militarize all the different sectors
of society. Donald Rumsfeld signed a document
implying that this would be a helpful
event,? he said. ?Now, why would anybody
want someone in their government that
would imply that mass catastrophe would be
good for our country? In fact, in the document
you can see that the concept of
Homeland Security was already created?
before the 9/11 terror attacks.?
?Read the blueprint for US
world domination for yourself,?
said another demonstrator. ?The
title is ?Rebuilding America?s
Defenses.? It?s easy to find online
on various respectable websites.
(two websites are www.informationclearinghouse.
info or

html) And learn about the
PNAC. Go to their website!?

Martin Hill urges every person
to look up information on the
matter to reach his and her own
conclusions. ?I am a life-long
Republican,? said Mr. Hill. ?I am a
Catholic, pro-life, pro-event conservative.
I voted for Bush Senior in 1988 and
also for the current president in 2000,
but not in 2004. It was the Patriot Act
that woke me up, and I began researching
9/11 because something didn?t seem
right.?

Chuck Horvath (the president of the
OC chapter of Veterans for Peace) said,
?I am here to protest that the Claremont
Institute is honoring a garden-variety war
criminal.? Mr. Horvath referred to
events that have transpired during
Rumsfeld?s tenure, such as Abu Ghraib.
He went on to say, ?Being a Vietnam
War veteran I am very sensitive to our
country advocating torture. I know what
water boarding is. If that isn?t torture,
then I don?t know what is.?
?Why,? said Pat Alviso (a member of
Military Families Speak Out), ?would
anyone want to give an award to someone
who is basically responsible for
killing so many soldiers and innocent
Iraqis in an unjust war? How can you
honor a man who supports torture??
?It?s a good thing that OC citizens are
noting the unjust and undeserved
award,? said Mr. Stiassni, who owns an
apartment building in Fullerton and has
been a part of the Fullerton community
for close to 20 years.

Throughout the
d e m o n s t r a t i o n ,
which began about
5pm, protesters came
and went with
approximately 40
present at one point.
A little after 8pm, the
remaining few people
dispersed. None of
the demonstrators
had a chance to see
Mr. Rumsfeld,
though, because he
kept out of sight.
Many motorists honked horns in support of the
protesters.
