It was nice - may consider having more lights outside. I preferred the pool area better, but it didn't seem many people attended as the last time. Thanks!!!

An elegant setting. Everything was so well organized by you and Mark and others that felt like you put on an event like this every weekend. The layout of the tent was just right. Seating areas, bar area and dance floor created an open and interesting set up where people could mingle, dance or settle as it suited them. A good DJ, too, playing some fun '80's techno that I hadn't heard before.
    Thanks for everything.

I agree with Carol below. It was so much fun, and a nice surprise Brian was playing the music. Always infectious energy and the best dance song selections. Nice to see Brian & Larry together again, too. My feet hurt, I danced so much. I guess that is a good thing.

I am glad the organizers are making a profit. It is a lot of work putting these events together. Everyone deserves to be paid for their efforts. All the e-mails, events, socials don't pop out of thin air someone is doing the work and I am glad to support their efforts. If you can't afford $10.00 for a great evening no one is forcing you to go. Stop whining and get over it. I am glad it is only $10.00 I have paid more for less. Thank you to the organizers for all your work, I will enjoy the evening!

Keeping positive, what you think becomes real. I am not a poverty thinker. We all have so much to be grateful for and we don't know what tomorrow will bring. Be in the moment, think great thoughts and what you focus on will become true for you. Let's be happy and not pessimistic!!

I am grateful for a place to dress up, meet beautifully dressed people and have a great time! My freshly transplanted NY friend thinks that the cover is a steal. She wanted know how much it was to park at the shopping center the other day and threw out $20. Perspective! She and I will be thrilled to pay the $10 cover and the parking charge! Look for our smiles!

FWIW, if I get to go to an event at a nice place with nice people and have fun and it only costs $5 or $10, I am pretty happy with that. I just don't care of they are paying expenses, making a lot of money or what. That's just not my business. No meetup organizer has to take a vow of poverty to entertain me! That's my perspective.
Does anyone agree with me on this?

    3 · September 19, 2013

  • lynda

600 people, so $6000? I spoke with the Hyatt about the expenses of having an event so I know you're making a large profit. You have to pay for special lighting and bartender, but not the DJ, setup, cleaning, etc. You could easily charge $5 and be just fine.

People are spoiled and expect something for nothing without ever being grateful for what they have and what they can get. Seems especially prevalent in our modern American society today, especially in the more populated areas like Orange County. I often attend events that cost much more with dinner and entertainment included and I never complain. I just feel fortunate that I'm able to attend and asking $10 a head to cover something like this is a bargain in my book. Just check out some of the other Meetup.com events on other sites and see what they charge. One lady I know does these events as a way to make a living and has been doing it for 21 years before Meetup.com even existed. She's works hard and hustles all the time just so she can put on a party for other people to meet each other and have a great time. She earns every cent she gets to help her raise a child and take care of a household and run her business of being an event planner. Complainers: stop whining and be grateful.

    8 · September 18, 2013

  • Tammy

There is a lot more work than one would think. If anyone want to host their own party, by all mean try it. When the RSVP show 400 people, is not always the same amount of people show up. Many of us belong to many meetup groups. When we reply to event, it can goes in as duplicate. People who say the host did not have to pay DJ is only because the hotel has nothing to do with it. The hose should or is paying the DJ for dragging his equipments to the events, set up, take down, and drag it back to the car. Life is so short to be complaining about these things. If you are unhappy, then go somewhere else by yourselve. Just be happy. The guys should stay off the wall. You come to meet a girl, so get on with it. Ask a gal to dance, worst to worst if she say no, there are one hundred more of us there. Only Cindellara go home before midnight, unless it is really boring. Hate me if you want, but these are all the truth that someone always wanted to say, but didn't dare to do it.

You're right, Dana. Plenty of organizers offer public dances, and it's a fact that they do it for profit. If a venue doesn't turn a profit, they cut their losses and go somewhere else. I'm amazed what little overhead there is for this event. Most organizers have to hire and pay a DJ.

    September 17, 2013

    • Dancing For L.

Yes my dear only $10.00 + $5.00 parking + drinks/food. I did my dances $15.00 inlcuding food, drinks, free parking no wonder lost money also cooked healthy food. Just cared about No alcohol to care for follow the law : Don't drink & drive .

Dana, no one is whining and, of course, everyone can afford $10. I just want to make people aware of where their money is going. I have absolutely no problem with any of the organizers making a profit (although organizing an event is not that complicated..just takes a few phone calls), as long as they admit that's what they're doing, instead of claiming it's going towards expenses.

    4 · September 17, 2013

  • lynda

No Alejandro, we are not "so poor". It's that most of the $10 is going directly into the pockets of the organizers and not to pay for the venue as they say. That's the issue..
