Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior (CalTech Lecture)

  • April 29, 2012 · 2:00 PM

Come join like minded curious people for the Skeptic's Society of Caltech's next lecture, featuring Physicist Dr. Leonard Mlodinow, the best selling author of The Drunkard’s Walk and coauthor of The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking) and War of the Worldviews (with Deepak Chopra).

This talk will be a fascinating, illuminating examination of the profound ways in which the unconscious mind shapes our lives. Every aspect of our mental lives plays out in two versions: one conscious, which we are constantly aware of, and the other unconscious, which remains hidden from us. Over the past two decades researchers have developed remarkable new tools for probing the unconscious, or subliminal, workings of the mind.

This explosion of research has led to a sea change in our understanding of how the mind affects the way we live. As a result, scientists are becoming increasingly convinced that how we experience the world—our perception, behavior, memory, and social judgment—is largely driven by the mind’s subliminal processes and not by the conscious ones, as we have long believed.

TICKETS are first come, first served at the door. Seating is limited. $8 for Skeptics Society members and the JPL/Caltech community, $10 for nonmembers.

Enjoyed every bit of it except the traffic, as I forgot to check for traffic jams on the 5 before I left, as well as the fact that I could have joined a carpool from OC with others attending. . . DA! Good thing I was planning to eat there after buying a ticket, as I used all that time getting there (almost didn't get a seat), and then enjoyed the group at a local place and had a fantastic time!

Directions had the wrong building, but the flow of folk was enough of a rule.

not enough seats; needed to get there early...we were lucky to find two seats though my guest and I sat apart...the speaker had good personality..the subject matter was just okay...a long drive..we went to descanso gardens in la canada first and that was our highlight of the day..suggest going to descanso gardens first for a walk--can get there at 1130 and still make the lecture series at 2 pm...thank you for organizing this

Car Pool? I have a minivan that can carry 6 plus me. Ill be leaving the Huntington Beach area (Beach Blvd & Adams) at about noon, going up Beach to the 405, then the 605 to the 5 and up to CalTech. If you are interested, and can meet me in HB or in route, email me with your contact info.

If someone is still looking for a ride, and you are somewhere near the 5, let me know. I can take 3 others comfortably. Will be leaving home about noon, heading up the 5 from south OC.

@Alashea: This well known scientist and author is on a book tour. He is covering the subjects in his book, which will be on sale if you wish to purchase it after the lecture (and he will sign it). http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/localnews/ci_20483766/physicist-leonard-mlodinow-examines-unconscious-mind-from-nueroscience

Will be heading up from Foothill Ranch (south OC) around noon. Google claims a 1:15 drive time (up the 5 most of the way). Figure to get there a bit early - not much point in going if they run out of tickets.

I won't be able to make it after all. Ani, maybe you can fill me in on it later?

Is anyone leaving from the Corona/Fullerton area?

    April 23, 2012

  • Roberto

@Leticia, this is in the Baxter Lecture hall, which seats 296 people. Because CalTech professors, staff, and students, as well as Skeptics Society members, get a discount, it usually fills up. I recommend getting there 30-60 minutes early. Here's a helpful map for parking and locating the auditorium: http://www.skeptic.com/downloads/map-BaxterHall.pdf

Hi Leo, can you add one more for the ride share?
Hi Roberto, if seating is limited, how many tickets are available, how fast does it sell out, and what are chances of msking the cut? Please advise. Thanks
