So.....Thanksgiving is over and you've consumed nearly double of a normal Human's 2000 calorie per day diet with all the stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pie, and the volume of alcohol you had to consume to tolerate that one special relative we all have. About now you are realizing that the OCGL holiday party is right around the corner and you're thinking O-M-G!...are my semi formals still going to fit after all that ?!? Don't worry; once again your friends at OC Good Life have the solution!
Come meet your friends at Crystal Cove Sunday morning and burn off those excess calories in one of Laguna Coast's most beautiful hiking areas - offering beautiful scenery coupled with a cool ocean breeze, a variety of colorful wildflowers, and of course, you can’t beat the great company of your fellow Good-lifers.
Location: We will start at the Ridge Park Trailhead (pictured below) bordering the edge of the 73 toll road at the very end of Ridge Park Road.
Coastal Peak Park is adjacent to the trailhead and is part of an affluent residential area of Newport Coast.
There is plenty of free parking on the street next to the park and next to the trailhead cul-de-sac, and full restroom facilities in the park within a few steps of the trail head.
About the Hike: The hike will be approximately 6 miles and take us roughly 2 1/2 hours to complete. I am classifying the difficulty level of this hike to be intermediate due to the distance; however most of the trail is a gradual incline or decline with only a couple of short sections that are steeper. The entire route of the trail is double wide giving us plenty of room. The trail is a dirt base with a few sections of loose rock, so sturdy shoes with good traction is recommended.
This is an "out and back" hike, meaning we will be following the same trail on our return (this also makes it easy for hikers that don't want to go the entire distance to turn around at any point and find their way back).
Our destination is the Lower Morro Campground, offering plush seating (well, picnic tables), full service restrooms (ok, more of an outhouse), and a beautiful view of the Laguna coastline and Catalina Island (this is no exaggeration - the view is truly stunning!).
We will be moving at an average walking pace, taking rest breaks along the way.
This is intended to be a fitness hike, but to also afford us the time to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
If you have never hiked before and are relatively inactive, you may find this to be a challenge. As with any physical activity there are risks so please know your limitations as you are ultimately responsible for your own safety.
Your organizer has a lot of experience hiking Crystal Cove State Park but is not a professional hiker, nor skilled in emergency first aid. In fact, if stranded on a deserted island he is likely the one that you would vote to trade to the locals for water and a stock of bananas.
- Appropriate shoes
- A light snack or energy bar
The weather should be beautiful, but check the weather before you go and have at least a light jacket with you just in case.
