It's always fun to return to simpler times as the Christmas Holiday approaches. When fruitcake batter occupies all the mixing bowls, to be baked and wrapped until the flavors of fruit and spices can marry. Sparkling white lights are woven through the Deodora and Sequoia trees in the garden. Vivian pulls out the holiday linens from the antique sideboard to be pressed. Every day plays a part in the preparation, but our favorite is cookie-making day when little and big hands eagerly form spicy gingerbread men and Grammy's Russian tea cakes. Secrets are many now, whispered over steaming pots of Saint Nicholas Tea.
The good news is that Vivian and Audrey (the owners) are reserving the house for our party only which means we can take more guests! It is always quite the experience to visit the historical McCharles house all decked out in Christmas trimmings. Food is arranged around the house, the trip to the kitchen for soup off the range soup kettle is a delight as antique Christmas decorations abound all over the kitchen. We will have scones, savories, salad, always interesting hot dishes, tea sandwiches and a variety of fresh home baked desserts along with the familiar Saint Nicholas tea. Eat a very light breakfast this day so you have room to try everything!
We will be able to explore all over the house and gardens of this lovely Victorian home. Feel free to wear a Christmas outfit, hat or even Victorian dress if you are so inclined.
