This is scheduled at the default when of "the last Thu of every 1 month" which places it on "Thursday, December 27, 2012 \ 6:00 PM To 10:00 PM". Consequently the 1st hour with MITCSC.Org event "K-12 Family Mixer at Mathobotix" where "Professor Eric Klopfer ..discusses ..the state of games in education" thu1730-1900 http://southerncalifornia.alumc... , an event I really would like to attend. This thread is on how to resolve this conflict.

BTW, our last and also first event listing (like this, we weren't hosting it, just sharing the event) specifically for kids was the very successful http://meetup.com/OCA... (observe 5th-8th graders introed to IT-&robot-making by Microsoft & more (#1)+) -expand the "Read more" link there and read it & the event comments for many details.

Another related kids robot event I went to: http://southerncalifo... ([MITCSC's listing of ]FIRST Robotics Regional Championship .. 3/23/2013 Long Beach Sports Arena) -my calendar entry MJQQ3G. I attended this and while there were too many people there for me to abe to find the MITCSC crew, it was very cool, with ~1000 attending, mostly endless jazzed & smart kids proudly showing off the robots they built -a huge success!

Honest feedback about first meeting; although I hustled to be on time at 6pm, only Lucy, the meeting leader, was on time. She was very sharp and enjoyable as we talked for almost 2 hours when others, including DestinyA arrived. Much geek chatter amongst small 2 people groups and other than introductions nothing was even started when I had to leave at 9PM, after 3 hours. The venue was nice but the noise level was a bit high, particularly because there were multiple conversations going on at the same time. Not much like an actual meeting. No pizza or meals available in the venue and after being told me MUST buy something I enjoyed a $6 brownie. It seems like a very sharp and knowledgeable group, if focuses. Also being told several times I must bring my laptop and I had screwed up and I must signup for JotHere, just to give this feedback I'm not sure if I will return. I probably will in the future if this honest feedback doesn't get me banned.

Sorry to be so slow to respond, but we definitely like honest feedback, Larry, and hope you'll return. This wasn't a typical meeting in that our main leaders, Destiny and Bill, were trying to double up and catch part of another meeting being held in the same complex. Even though they announced that they would be late, it caused some difficulty and probably isn't something they'll try again.

Another thing that was atypical about this meeting was that it was held at a new venue we're trying out -- and, yes, our hosts do expect patrons to buy something, but it doesn't have to be "a $6 brownie." A $2 cup of coffee would do. As for the geek speak, I let it go by me when I don't understand it. Usually I do learn something at every meeting, as I did from you at this one. After all, this is a techie group.

    WHEN (& possibly WHERE)

    December 25, 2012

    • DestinyArchitect

      **Of the 3 non-ldrs attending:
***Joy&apparently Martin knew of&had adjusted 2the delayed host arrival,
***but,as some attendees wont, important new attendee Larry seemingly didnt read here the cmts well-alerting of this conflict nor of my RSVP cmt noting I wd b delayed&why,4in his http://meetup.com/OCA... it appears he strongly mis-expected this mtg wd start normally.
      *So in summary,what2do?
**Since the conflict was 1time,there is nothing as far as scheduling which seems needs 2b changed.
      **But there r ways 4everyone 2improve:
***As example,I again note my "clever" fix was not actually gd but bad to hv such overlap, especially with:
      ****a new venue to deal w/ &
****not insisting&insuring at least 1 of our other tech host(as Bill&Kathy) be there including after both were announcing they wd b there at start.
***So,from say my cmts here (this& prior 2 cmts), there r ways 4everyone the learn fr this&improve; &I start w/me.

I too must apologize to the members for my sloppy handling of the schedule. I didn't communicate with the other leaders well, and also didn't take our schedule seriously. I understand I must work harder to ensure our meetings start on time.

Bill, thanks much for taking photos and videos at my party Sunday http://1.JotHere.com/MELucy . I'd love to get access to them asap for a New Year's letter I'm sending to family and friends. Can I talk with you about that at this meeting? Please click "Reply" on this thread.

    WHERE

    December 25, 2012

    • DestinyArchitect

The new venue was probably the best part of this mtg. Overall notably nicer than our last venue; pros-thu-cons:
*The spirited crowd were nice&warm, including:
***Bill&I& even Lucy ended up staying notably late, right up to venue closing 11pm.
***I even met a par of 2 cute Korean gals there :-)
      *was wifi!,&was reasonable,tho 1 had to relogin every ~2hrs.
*Nice not to rushed out just b4 10pm, as our past venue did; staff seem pleased to have us.
*The staff reserved a table 4us,even made a nice sign 4us,&took a tad more interest in our subject
*there weren't overhead screens set up to display on,tho we didn't end up setting up our own displays.
*the food wasn't much of a complete meal fr what I experienced, tho seemed fixable incl by restaurants in same parking lot.
*Noise was a tad of an issue, but seemed fixable.

      December 28, 2012

    • DestinyArchitect

*The board games going on (every Thu) in the patio were a tad noisy; so
Lucy picked our table by the front counter (not patio),& there we assembles tables into a long table, which worked, except the periodic blender behind the counter was a rather noisy.
*As typical, owner Beth was there playing board games the whole time. We said hello and she seemed a tad pleased OCAndroid had picked to meet there.

      December 28, 2012

  • DestinyArchitect

*Martin & Bill spent a long time talking, had a good time.
*Martin said he would consider becoming a meeting leader, something we all said we'd quite appreciate.
*Martin said he sometimes attends SoCalAndroid and they joke about me (yeah, because they're jealous!). He sayd they've been having their usual hack nights, though not recently due to the holidays, and only 1 presentation (presentations there still rare).

    December 27, 2012

  • DestinyArchitect

Joy hadn't yet gotten a smart phone, so as planned we talked about what to get.

    December 27, 2012

    • DestinyArchitect

We told Joy about Google Voice and she agreed to get it. http://1.JotHere.com/... tells how. She very much wants to keep her mobile phone # so I recommended she port that to Google Voice; Joy had doubts about porting her # to GV, one was Google having her phone records and also the quality. I told her her that Google having the phone records was more trustworthy than any phone company I know, Google notably known for defending customer records against search, and Google would allow her to create an account under a fictitious name (as I do). Lucy had said that Google Voice quality is sometimes bad but later she admitted she didn't realize that that that was just sometimes when using the computer/laptop/desktop not from calling from a cell phone using the GV App, so this should not be a problem.

      December 27, 2012

    • DestinyArchitect

*We told Joy about the best deals on Android mobile phones: $35/mo on Virgin Mobile for 4G & 3G, $30/mo on T-Mobile for 5G of 4G plus 100min (what I use with GV), and $25/mo on Virgin Mobile for 300min+unlimited 3G with a phone, my Samsung Intercept (I may still have a plan and offered to lend it to her at least till she finds something better)
*After all this, ~1hr ago, Joy left, quite satisfied.

      December 27, 2012

  • DestinyArchitect

*Mtg still going on! though coming to an end (Martin just left)
*Started on time (6pm) thanks to Lucy, with Larry there and sometimes Joy jumping between here and the MITCSC mtg. They had a good time.
*Formal meeting began ~7:35pm with also Bill & me joining. Plus a visitor from the MITCSC, Dimitry Turbiner, and his father & brother; they stayed about 15 min then had to leave, D many times mentioning he would signup & come next mtg.
*Introductions then news & Qs, all went well.
    *more details coming.

MEETUP EVENT LISTING DESCRIPTION (which almost entirely repeats every meeting)

    December 25, 2012

    • Lucy Parker

Regarding "MFOITP: Occurrences," I suggest a rewrite such as this to make it more clear, and I would move it up to the second position on the page after "MFMGD1: .. repeats on the last Thu every 1 month"

Summary of Some Past, Present, and Future Meetings MFOITP:

      DATE: 2012.07.30.Mon MTG#59 TOPIC/S: including BEST TABLETS,OUYA GAME CONSOLE,GOOGLE JOB MFOJTD
DATE: 2012.08.27mon MTG#60 TOPIC/S: NOVEL USES OF ANDROID, as TV entertainment center PC MFOJDR

      December 27, 2012

    • Lucy Parker

Furthermore, I suggest you try to be as direct as possible in your wording. For example, why say "...repeats on the last Thu every 1 month" when you could just say "every month"?
