Hike an Appalchian Trail Section south of Cole Mountain

We can continue South on The Appalcahian Trail after the weekend hike finishes. Tentative plan is two and a half days, 25 miles, south to the James River footbridge on the A.T. We have a shuttle ride planned to return us to the cars at Hog Camp Gap. This will be a " you need it, you better bring it" hike. Advice and planning help is available but in general you should be able to care for your own needs. This will be a great addition to the beginner weekend hike to Cole Mountain for any newcomers and will be a chance to immediately put to use your new skills.

This turned out to be a great hike. It started a bit on the rough side with freezing rain and snow on the trail, but quickly turned into a nice hike. Pretty cold for this time of year, but really a nice walk!

Just let me know what you decide, along with info on finding the shelter. 9:00 does sound a little early...

yeah it'd probably take you about 3-1/2 to 4 hours just to get to the parking lot

Paul, I recommend Amy and Cindy meet us at Cow Camp Gap Shelter, where we're already going to be Sunday morning, otherwise we have to hike that section twice.

If they could meet us about 9 or 10 we could get going to Brown mtn shelter.

I don't mind hiking to the parking lot to meet up with them, I'd give them until noon to show up, since that's the time Paul has on the meetup. Should be plenty of time if they're leaving in the morning. So that would be about an 11 mile hike for the day from Cow Camp Gap instead of 6 miles. I think they'd have to be up pretty early to meet up at the shelter so early. We could meet up at the Brown Mtn. Shelter though if you'd rather not do the repeat section, Phil.

Still trying to.get hold of them. I might need to return to the car anyway but I usually don't like to walk the same section 3 times in a day either! Maybe we can organize it somehow.

Paul, are we breaking up the hike to stay at the 3 shelters along the route? just curious

you'll need to look up Cold Mountain on hikingupward.com instead of Cole Mountain

Paul, how much will we need for the shuttle?

    March 24, 2013

The charge is $35.00 for all of us. We add a bit for tip and still pretty cheap!

How would you rate the skill level on this hike? And, is there no water available? It's perfect timing for public school spring break.... I have a 16 year old Boy Scout son with whom I've been wanting to backpack. I'd like to explore this trip as a possible adventure for us. Any comments?

Paul W. is doing the planning, but there should be plenty of water (or I wouldn't go..the AT always has plenty of water!)

      March 10, 2013

    • Paul

Oops. Somehow my reply never posted. We are doing this as a normal group hike, not as a teaching or training hike since the group will be just finishing one of those. This should not be an especially difficult pace or section and anyone that is comfortable with overnight backpack trips should enjoy it. As Phil said, water should be readily available but normal treatment or filtering should be planned. I'd be happy to help your planning, but most AT guidebooks can give you an idea of what to expect. And still early enough that weather might surprise us..

cool section, goes by an old village and a marker where a 4 year old boy's body was found.

Why is this hike starting on a Sunday?

    March 10, 2013

    • Phil

Because this is a "follow on" to the Cole Mtn Trip, starting from the same area, and since we're already there...;-)
