Backpack at Seneca Creek/Falls, WV near Riverton, WV (EASY) TRIP

Seneca Creek and Seneca Falls - OUT and BACK trip! EASY Backpacking trip!!! The hike is flat, but be prepared for stream crossings that may be 12 inches or so deep!!

This is Memorial Day weekend. We’re not coming back until Monday evening.

Seneca Creek and Seneca Falls make this one of the most beautiful stream hikes in the mid-Atlantic. With numerous awesome camp sites along its banks, this is a definite backpacker’s delight.

If more than 10 people sign up for this trip Jennifer Kersh will lead a second group, since there can only be 10 people per group in this backcountry location.

The Plan:

Day 1 (Friday): We will use our usual carpooling points - Virginia Beach at 6pm and Newport News at 7 pm. We will drive 4 hours to Barley Pond Campground and car camp on Friday night. This is free, primitive style campground. There is a pit toilet.

Day 2 (Saturday): We will drive the remaining 2 hours to the trail head. We will hike for approximately 6 miles to our campground near a large waterfall.

Day 3 (Sunday): Day hike up for the wonderful views or relax by the falls!

Day 4 (Monday): We will do the return hike of 6 miles back to our cars. Drive home with a stop for lunch.

What To Bring: Nothing is provided for you. You are responsible for all gear and food you need for the weekend. If you have questions on what to bring feel free to email me.

Water: Bring water for Friday night and Saturday morning. Water will be available Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Bring a filter, tabs, or pen.

Weather: We go regardless of weather.

Dogs: Dogs are not allowed on this trip.

Carpool: Carpools are always organized in advance, for overnighters, if you have rsvped yes you will receive an email a week in advance to help us organize rides. Please keep an eye out for this email.
RSVPing: There is a waitlist set up if we exceed the max number of hikers allowed on this trip. Please put your name on the waitlist. People often cancel or we may plan two groups if we have a large enough waitlist.

No Shows/Last Minute Cancellations: We do keep track of no-shows and last minute cancellations. If you make this a habit we will start removing you from trips to allow waitlisters your spot.

Questions: Send me an email or post your question below. There are no privies so follow standard sanitary practices for the woods.

Glad you guys had a great trip! It's weird that you guys were within 25 miles or so of us, and we froze. Looks a lot warmer where you were!

Really enjoyed getting to know our "new" backpackers. Some of the best backcountry food ever! Loved the long trek to spruce knob and the night hike :-). Should have some pictures tonight.

Very relaxing hike and a great break from the world. Awesome group of backpackers who provided a tasty feast usually reserved for car camping. Thanks Jennifer and Jay for leading!

I sent out the email for carpooling and I've only got responses from a few of y'all. If you are going, ensure you respond to my email by the tomorrow morning or I'll assume your not going. Thanks!

Hey Rodney I sent you an email through Facebook we're driving ourselves, but what are the coordinate points on where we're all gonna meet? Also where can I find a trail map for that area.

      May 22, 2013

    • Andrew F.

Rodney: I can't go after all, but I didn't see your e-mail. I think that might be a technical problem.

I have a question. It seems that every trip I want to go on, there is a stipulation of "no dogs allowed." What is that? I mean, it's a national forest, after all.

      I have no idea.

I decided to pass on this one since somehow dogs were not allowed in a natinoal forest.
