heads up for everyone. I just found out that this saturday there is a major community event in Ocean View area and it will be pretty much impossible to get into or out of the area during our proposed times. I am seeking some other handy location. Open for ideas now and will post here when we find a place.

We have been reviewing the old slides and planning for this weekend. We did not change the old slides though, even though we will be modifying the presentation as we go. It would be good to read the slides and files for backpacking 101 in our files. Under "more" and "Files" on the website. Feel free to print a copy and bring it with you. This year we will be only focusing on what's needed to join one of our beginner hikes and get started very simply. See you soon.

we are happy to see so many new names on the rsvp list! The Library has confirmed our space for the event. We will have 2 parts, a morning Class style presentation then an afternoon Q&A with Demonstration session.

Good timing maybe for some of us, Wild River Outfitters in Va Beach is having a gear swap for used etc gear on March 22, just a week after our class.

We are in the process of updating the information for this meetup intro day. Last year's information will be used as an outline though. The 2013 information is available on this website. Select "more" then select "files" and you will find the backpacking 101 information from 2013. Reading this will show you what was covered in the past. The only difference we are planning is to leave out the details that are easier to learn later.
And.... Speaking of later... We will be looking at good dates for a few beginner weekend hikes, so look ahead for open slots in your spring calendar.

GreenLife is definitely open to be used as a meeting space for this! We can demonstrate stoves and water purifiers as well as pull product from the shelves to give examples of different types of gear if needed. There is also the opportunity there for anyone to check out/pick up some rental gear as well.

    • Paul

Thanks Matt! We have appreciated your help and your rental program. Although we are doing this starter day at the library I would be happy to plan a group demo day at Green Life soon with you. Or, if someone else wants to set it up after we have our long intro day....?

I guess I like the idea of a store like GreenLife for the Meetup. My gear is so old that. . . . How old is it? Well, I went to buy some cans of Gaz for my Gaz stove and found out they haven't made Gaz for some time. Anybody want to buy a Gaz stove?

I think it is a great idea to do some additional events for more advanced information. This spring we should be able to organize some sponsored events.

We are happy to see so many new members signing up for this event. We will be posting more details and documents as it gets closer. Our focus will be on those skills and gear needed as a minimum to join a beginner multi-day trip with this group or similar. We will look at simple inexpensive sources for appropriate food, clothing, and gear. We will try to avoid topics not needed to be covered before starting out. We plan on some presentations, and some demonstrations. Members that have been on our hikes will be on hand to discuss their learning process. And, of course, lots of great photos and stories!

Our focus for this event will be on simple, inexpensive ways to get started. Usually we follow up with a few easy weekend trips as the spring season arrives. Additional events are easy to plan and add as interest develops. Gear demos, cooking classes, gear rentals, map sources etc are all great topics. Some will be covered at this class, some deferred for our first "beginner trip".

Sorry about the location confusion. Apparently leaving a location blank means the website automatically asks for suggestions. But we are planning on the same library location as in the past to keep easy access for everyone on both sides of the tunnel.

Missed the session last year, won't be missing this one!

    January 22, 2014

We will probably be using the same library as in the past in Ocean View. In the past it was easy to find and accessible just off Rt 64. I am Just waiting on confirmation for march 15 as of now. This may still change so I left the date open. Those that want to help out by presenting a topic please send me an email and we will get organized in a few weeks.

York River State Park is kooooool and Jon can help out, but anyplace is great. I am afraid that if it is held at a sports shop I will upgrade my equipment. LOL

I can come and help if it's in the evening on a Saturday, or anytime on Sunday.

I can check with Matt at Green Life Adventure Sports. He may let us hold the meeting at the store. He is pretty low key. Let me know and I will contact him
