POSTPONED/FOREST SERVICE CONTROL BURN -ACTIVITY Cold Mountain

//POSTPONED// US Forest Service Controlled Burn scheduled for this area has still not taken place and there remains a possibility that it could take place this week or this weekend.

We will reschedule this meetup.

This is a great 'starter backpack'.

Here's what Hikingupward.com has to say: "Can't make it to Scotland or Switzerland anytime soon to hike those spectacular high mountain meadows? Well right here in the Old Dominion we have the next best thing! Every hiker in the mid-Atlantic should hike Cold Mountain at least once. The 360° meadow views from the saddle are are some of the best on the east coast.

Cold Mountain is the sister circuit to the Mount Pleasant hike on the next ridge. If you are looking for a slightly longer hike, or a backpack, consider combining this hike with the Mount Pleasant route for a combined 11.3 mile figure eight circuit."

-----------------

We'll drive up Friday night and camp in the meadow next to the parking lot.

On Saturday we'll hike up the AT, up and over the beautiful scenic bald of Cold Mountain and camp at Cowcamp Gap Shelter.  A spring provides all the water we'll need (to filter).

On Sunday we'll follow the Hotel Trail back to the parking lot.

We can then have our 'victory feast' at Vito's, in Amherst on Hwy 29 or Dr. Ho's Pizza, also on Hwy 29, but much closer to Charlottesville.

Colleen and I decided to hike up Saturday afternoon and camp for the night. It was a bit breezy but still a beautiful evening. The trees and flowers along the ridgeline and bald have not bloomed yet. It will probably be a couple of weeks before they do.

Great pictures. I was 100% packed and ready for this trip, but with the possibility of the burn I didn't want to risk loosing a planned hiking weekend and the gas money driving from Charlotte. I ended up hiking the Ridgeline trail (in and out/25mi) between Crowders and Kings Mt. Plus it is only a 50min drive from my home.

I lived in Charlotte from 2003 - 2006. I enjoyed the Crowders and Kings Mt. Cole Mountain will be better when the the trees fill out. I'm moving to Charlottesville in June. Once I'm settled, I'd like to lead few trips in the area.

I called the Forest Service James River District this morning and spoke with the control burn POC; the burn still has yet to take place, and although the chances are slim, the burn still could take place this week or this weekend, dependent as always on weather conditions at all their planned burn locations.

Therefore I'll postpone this event and not take the chance of screwing up anyone's weekend.

If you still want to go, the weather will be beautiful and IF the burn does indeed happen, you can always camp at the same place and walk the AT in the opposite direction to the Seely-woodworth shelter, about 7 miles, which is also a great trip.

    regards

    Phil

Carpools: If you need a ride please ask for one here along with where you live. If you can drive and will give rides, please also announce here, along with the number of passengers you can take and where (approx) you'd like to pick up. Also share the general time that you can leave/pick people up. thanks

Madalyn I have a lot of extra equipment. Tents, stoves, sleeping bags. I have some extra packs that you are welcome to use, just not sure of the fit. Since it is a short hike, it may not matter to much if the articles don't fit your exact needs, but you are welcome to try.

James, thank you so much for the offer! Unfortunately some stuff came up this weekend that I couldn't miss so I can't come backpacking. But I'm sure you guys will have a blast!

Trail Head directions: from Buena Vista - take Hwy 60 headed east, turn left on coffeytown road (paved), then turn right on wiggens spring road (not paved),follow for 2 miles or so, to where AT crosses road.. From hwy 29 south out of Charlottesville, stay on 29 then right on 60 then right on Coffey town road, then right onto wiggens spring road.

I'll be driving up earlier Friday to pick up Colleen in Charlottesville and drop off some stuff to my sister in Lynchburg. I'll probably get there by 10:00 if not earlier. We will either be in an orange Marmot tent or a hammock. See you there.

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that we only have to hike about 3 miles each day, so....we're not going to be in much of a rush and will have some down time (lots of it). Bring a book, a Frisbee, etc., there will be time for day hikes & we'll start the campfire early.

Does anyone going have extra gear such as tent, backpack, sleeping bag that I could borrow for the weekend? I'm new to camping and want to make sure I really love it before I but the gear for it.

    April 14, 2014

    • Phil

Hi Madalyn, several people on this past weekend's trip rented their equipment. I think, not sure, it was Wild River, or Greenlife.

You may want to call the forest service a bit before you go. They have a controlled burn planned for that area that they haven't performed yet. http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/gwj/alerts-notices/?aid=22137
