"A Sense of Place in Fiction" Fred Shafer sponsored by OCWW

Off Campus Writers' Workshop Presents Fred Shafer's dynamic 4-week  Workshop on...

"A Sense of Place in Fiction"     In her seminal essays about fiction writing, Eudora Welty calls the physical setting of novels and short stories a “lesser angel,” because it is often neglected by writers, who keep it in the background, or off to the side, of everything else they do.     Fred Shafer, following Welty’s lead, will contend that the setting of a work of fiction is just as important as the “greater angels”—character, plot, and theme—and that it might even appear first in the writer’s thoughts, as a source of those other elements.     In his four workshops, on September 4, 11, 18, and October 2, Fred will cover a number of issues regarding the role played by setting. Many of the examples he uses will be taken from literary fiction, but he will refer frequently to books written for all ages, in the belief that, no matter the audience, writers can learn a great deal from each other. His first presentation will focus on the sense of place in picture books for children.     Fred was an editor for many years with TriQuarterly, the international literary journal published by Northwestern University, where he teaches fiction writing in the School of Professional Studies. He also leads a group of private workshops in short story and novel writing. His own work has appeared in several journals.

Note: The price per session is $15 for non-members and $10 for members.
