Re: [EmiratesLoCo] What should we do with this meetup group

Wait, there's Launchpad mailing list we automatically get access to when we join the group on LP. Why the need to register again to use mailing list? Plus there's the confusion of having to separate mailing lists, one at LP and the one you are suggesting. It won't be much different from having this Meetup mailing list around along side the "official" mailing list.

Please consider making LP the official mailing list service for the LoCo.

Hi All
The post which I posted was what to do with the group.
I posted it so that there is some agreement on what to do with the group, since I am not the person who started the group. The  group was there  before and I saw that it was lead by sincere interest  in promoting open source, that time I was not a ubuntu or Debain promoter, I  saw in this group some encouraging activities and joined, contributed my effort. The group activities was going well but the group organizer Ommar step down, and there was a need for some one to step in. I paid the meetup charges to keep it continue the regular meetup which was happening. I thought it as a platform to meet like minded people and to promote 'OpenSource' for me all Linux distribution are same. If some one stars a Fedora or Red-hat group I will surely  join over there and contribute. If I feel it a venue to promote a company or a person I will quit. Mostly each such group loses sincere volunteers when members feel  their   group organizers  lack credibility to motivate others.
I will be looking forward to contribute to any group which is transparent and sincere  in their activities, if such a group is sincere and comply to open source belief, members will have the right to know why some members membership was on hold for long time. In the present ubutuLoCo it happened to me that my membership request was hold for very long time and there was no reason given for why it was done. I have the right to know on what basis was such activities done.

Now future of this group depends on the advice of members who were active. Here we mean 'active' means actively participated in any of the group activities , it can be monthly meetup, workshop, install festival.

Hi Zulfiqar,

Thanks for your input.  I am also not looking to fight as that will solve nothing.

I feel sad that you think I did not invite anyone to join in after the meeting with the Loco Council as you should also have received the mail I sent on the 20th of November 2012 to this specific mailing list.  Just for the record I will quote it here:

"Hi all,

Last night myself and Zulfiqar attended a Google Hangout with several members of the Ubuntu LoCo Council.

This is the first step in a process to bring us all closer together and to help facilitate a merging so that there can be a unified and stronger LoCo in the UAE. As a start I urge all members wanting to continue the cause of promoting free and open source software via activities in the Ubuntu LoCo to join in on the following face to face meeting if possible (deta ils will be made available later in the month) as well as an agreed IRC meeting also to happen soon.

We have two diverse groups that has been striving to achieve similar goals but in two different ways. In time I am sure the LoCo will find the optimum way to go ahead that will satisfy the unique needs of its members.

We will be having a follow up session with the LoCo Council in about a month (depending on how the holidays fall and availability etc.) and it is my hope that we will be able to report positively on progress towards our goal of unification.

Regards
Neil"

I was also in contact with some of the more active members via e-mail directly but as you are well aware nobody from the group using meetup.com made it to the meeting, and right after that none of them made i t to the IRC meeting.  This was also a time I went on leave and which right after we begun with a very strenuous time at work and up until a week ago I have been so busy I have had little time for anything else (which accounts in a measure for my lack of participation).

I am very sad that the guys I have been in a "loco" for the last couple of years have not at the very least made an attempt to build bridges and give a unified loco a chance.  That is one of the reasons I have yet again requested them in my previous message to do so.  I want the loco to grow and succeed.

As for my misgivings about activity as a loco, I still stand by them.  The power of community is in members, in its numbers and diversity.  For sure everyone is busy and their will be flows and ebbs in participation etc. but it is up to us to pick up the slack if it is seen.  The biggest failing is that everything seems dead. &nbs p;If anything this could be the first thing that we try and rectify.  Create and maintain avenues of communication. If we have meetings let us schedule them where everyone can be made aware, take minutes and communicate them.  Show the world that there is something happening here.  Looking at what we have now it will scare away all but the most hardy people to try and participate, and that is what we want the most... Participation by the community after all.

I am not criticizing anything anybody has done or is busy doing, and if it sounds/sounded like it, I apologize.  I do however feel things can be done better and therefore I will speak up, but also strive to make it happen.  For what it is worth I again re-confirm that  I am going to do what I can for the loco and invite anybody not active to join in.

I have met a number of passionate community members and it is sad to see all that enth usiasm and skills untapped.

Neil

Hi Neil,

I would like to put in my 2 cents as well. I have been very quiet and avoided any fight on this forum. Whenever I tried to say something, the response was aggressive and abusive. I never responded to any accusations in the past nor will I in the future. What I want to say is that after the council intervention, I thought both the groups will work together and progress but that did not happen. I handed over most of the responsibility within the group which was coming regularly for the meetings and hence there was hardly any communication from my side.

All of us with no exception are working and I understand it is very difficult to take out time for any extra curricular activity these days specially after the recession. Hence we have no right to force anyone to join the group and put in extra hours. The small group that we are right now still manages to  meet on and off even though we are not meeting on specified dates but we communicate ether via mailing list or the whatsapp group but we make sure we meet and have fun along with discussing ubuntu.

You have mentioned in your email there has been no reconciliation between the groups but I fail to understand, once the council agreed and there was an agreement between us as well, you never invited this group to come join us. I have no clue what the reason was but I did not see any effort. Asad wrote an email (if I am not wrong) to this group inviting you all but all in vain. In first few meetings ubutnu-loco group use to wait for anyone form this group to join us but none of you not even one person communicated nor showed any interest to join in. Which in itself shows lack of interest to reconcile. Today after my email only Ahmad joined the mailing list and thats all.

If the question is how does one bring about change ... you need to participate and voice your opinion and everyone would have listened.

I hope this email does not flair things again as it has been the case in the past but I once again ask you all to come join us and work alongside is you are true supporter of opensource. We are promoting opensouce but if we do not ourselves believe in community and ethics of open source we can never succeed.

Ubuntu is about showing humanity to one another: the word itself captures the spirit of being human.

I hope in near future I would see more participation form this group and we all work together.

Hi all,

I find it ironic that only last night I made my mind up to not forsake Ubuntu or the LoCo here in the UAE.  For the last couple of months (still actually) I have been to busy to give any attention to the LoCo and had for the most part made my piece with the state it is in.  But I do feel I can still contribute and thus I have decided to add value, if I can in any way shape and/or form.

Firstly, I do believe we don't need meetup.com and all of the resources required are available and already in place.  If someone feels a need to have it and maintain it (pay for it, maintain it) that is something that they are more than welcome to do.  I do feel however it is not needed.

As for there being two of everything... it saddens me that there doesn't seem to be reconciliation and joined effort in the UAE... but even more than that it saddens me that there doesn't seem to be anything going on the UAE currently that resembles an Ubuntu Local Community :(

So what this means is that there is work to do, and I challenge each and everyone reading this that feels they want to give back to free/libre  and open source software via the path of Ubuntu, to advocate, promote, translate, develop and otherwise improve Ubuntu to join in on shaping the Loco, to help in growing the loco... There will always be things we don't like, be it people or the things they do and say... that is part of community.  If we stop thinking of what if's and might be's we can focus on right here and right now and get something done.

I can't come to Dubai often but when I do I would love to get together with anyone interested to have a talk face to face.  That being said I am coming through on the 9th and most probably I will be coming back the 10th of this month so feel free to contact me and we can see what we can do ;) (mail me on [address removed] or on this or the other mailing list).

Warmest Regards
Neil

Why there are 'still' two mailing list? two groups? two team? is it that hard to be just one team or group? seriously, why things are moving SO SLOW here?

I see no point to be on two different group at two different time.
This is wrong.
