Help a beginner understand what all Wordpress can do.

I am a beginner and need to get a specific website going. I need more than the basic blog but it isn't exactly e-commerce.
I am also a Web Development student at Francis Tuttle.
Anyone willing to meet with me?
27 May is the first Monday I can meet but if someone wants to choose another night, I can do it any night other than Wednesday.

Thanks

I don't see anyone. I can meet with you one on one if you still need help?

Ok, sorry. That is right around the time I got there. Call me at (405)[masked] and we can meet up. Also, keep checking this page every week and they will announce when the next meeting is.

Also, I just signed up for these free workshops. You might find them useful. http://ithemes.com/20...

Valerie, We learn how to operate a basic site and how to modify a theme with CSS in the first course (which is where I am), but I guess I am impatient as I need to know more sooner than the program is going to give it to me. I would appreciate any help you could give and I guess Marlene would too. Do the meetings need to be on Mondays? Where do meetings usually take place.

Chris, I would be willing to travel to Norman. How about you Marlene?

Susan, thank you for the reminder about Lynda.com. I forget some of the resources I have.

    Thanks everyone.

Susan, I am just now reading this comment from you. The Wordpress Users Group meets the last Monday of each month at Oklahoma Christian University in the prince Engineering building.

Valerie, there were a bunch of other 'Yes' RSVPs to this -- I think they're at Francis Tuttle. Room A1040.

I'm here, running late. What room are you meeting in?

    May 30, 2013

I won't be able to make it tonight.

Weather looks threatening; 'fraid I won't be attending.

Okay folks. Thursday night May 30, 2013 at Francis Tuttle on N. Rockwell. Go to the IT building and it will be room A1040. This is just to the left of the front desk.

The IT building is along the row of buildings on the south side of the campus. It is pretty clearly marked.

Again, I am sorry for the confusion. I couldn't find anyone to lead but we can decide how we would like to proceed. I hope the final arrangements are not too late.

    Thanks for the interest.

I am so sorry for all the confusion. I didn't really realize I was organizing something when I first posted. I just thought I was asking for help. I would still like to get help but I also didn't realize that this was Memorial Day and there probably won't be any public buildings open.

However, since it seems that I have "organized" a new group, if you all still want to meet, we will change the day to Thursday, May 30. I will try to get a room at either Francis Tuttle or a library. Everyone let me know if you are still interested. I do not have a program or speaker. If anyone who is knowledgeable and willing, also let me know.

Thanks everyone and sorry for the confusion.

    Where are we meeting?

    May 22, 2013

    • Chris J. Z.

Valerie, it doesn't look like the organizer(s) have settled on a place. I have offered to host, but no one has taken me up on it. Given the state of I-35 now, it might not be too convenient for anyone to be travelling to Norman right now any way.

Where do these things usually happen?

    April 19, 2013

    • Chris J. Z.

Usually at Francis Tuttle. But if you can come down to Norman during my office hours, I'm willing to give you some of my time. Please contact me at http://messengerwebde... & let's schedule a time.

If you're trying to do what I think you are, this might help. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/javek-uploader/

Took me about half a minute to find it via Google. Also, beware free WP template sites. They usually have spammy content hidden via base64 encoding. Pretty sure Weebly is legit, but I thought I'd save you some heartache.

Thanks Chris. I have what I consider to be a very basic knowledge of html and CSS. I know nothing about PHP, JavaScript or JQuery. We have a host and I have a host for my school projects. We uploaded WordPress to the host and use themes to modify, practicing our CSS. I don't know what SSH is. I do know GUI. The hosts have dashboards. They do emphasize separating content from presentation and that has presented one problem form me so far in the sizing of images. What I need, specifically, is to be able to upload hipaa sensitive information from clients. The template sites like Weebly do not have the means to do this. I thought maybe a WordPress Plugin might make things easier but I do not know enough about plugins yet either.

Susan, what were you wanting to learn how to do that is beyond what they're teaching you in your course at the moment? I might either be able to help or to point you to some resources.

In any case, I'd say that in order to get the most out of WP as a developer, you need a good understanding of HTML5 & CSS + at least a basic understanding of JavaScript+jQuery and PHP. Basic knowledge of how to set up and maintain a web server, either via SSH or a GUI (e.g., Webmin & phpMyAdmin) is also helpful, if you plan to self-host the website rather than hosting w/ wordpress.com.

Are they teaching you the importance of separating content from presentation? Do they address accessibility issues? Just curious.

lynda.com is a great resource. I'd also look at sitepoint.com and the w3c consortium's website. And of course, wordpress.org is chock full of documentation, but it assumes familiarity with the basic technologies of the web (HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP).

Forget what I said about another night of the week. I see that my suggested date is the date of the meeting. I just need to know where.

    Thanks again.

I'd love to help you! I'm confused though... Isn't wordpress something you learn in the beginning of the Francis Tuttle Web Design & Development program?

    April 22, 2013

  • Chris J. Z.

Can you travel to Norman? I'd be willing to give you a little of my time — point you to some resources, answer any specific questions of the "how do I do 'x'" nature, etc.

    Hi Susan,

I am familiar with Drupal, and I just now started learning Wordpress or I would offer to meet with you. Since you are a student at Francis Tuttle, you should have access to the Lynda.com training library. I highly recommend watching this course - http://www.lynda.com/Business-Online-Marketing-SEO-tutorials/CMS-Fundamentals/74535-2.html. It will help you understand not only what Wordpress can do, but CMSs in general. How far are you in the program? If you need any advanced functionality, you will most likely need working knowledge of a scripting language such as PHP. Hope this helps, good luck building your site!

I just completed a basic design in WP for my class. Take a look at your leisure. I am hoping to build on this foundation.
