Responsive Web Design 101

Join us for a demo and Q&A about responsive web design 101 with Keith Robinson, digital product manager with Global News.

Responsive web design allows for the display of online content across an array of devices -- desktop, tablet and smartphones.

Global uses RWD across its sites and worked with some of the pioneering firms in this area of web design. Robinson was deeply involved in Global's implementation of RWD.

CBC information architect Erinn Brush will also be joining us. CBC used responsive design in building its Hamilton website.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the formal presentation and Q&A from 7-7:30 p.m. or so, followed by networking!

Thanks to Bill Doskoch for organizing this meetup!

Philip's piece is solid and thought-provoking. Would be good to have a more comprehensive look at the issue -- as Craig says, the revenue side of the equation is always a consideration.

In Global's case, I can tell you the cost of app development -- creation, updates, multi-platform -- was an important factor, as was the problem of mobile ads.

That's not to say performance isn't important (maybe the *most* important) but anyone considering a redesign along either of these paths will likely have a bucket full of stakeholders and competing interests to satisfy.

A great, and timely, discussion to be had.

It's an interesting article. I will say that we're very committed to continuous development. The site launched in late March, but since then we've made a number of improvements, especially around the video experience. One area we are now very much focussed on improving is performance - especially on mobile.

Both presentations were content-rich and well-organized and I came away much better informed on the subject. Subsequent discussions with Keith and Erinn yielded further insights.

We miss you Phillip! Hope to see you soon and can't wait to read your piece. If you're around, keep an eye on the hashtag tonight, we'll be tweeing with #ONATO!

Here's a reply for 'Andrew': This will be the one night. But the highlights will be tweeted at #ONATO. And the presenters are gearing their talks towards non-techies -- although techies are welcome to ask advanced questions. :)
