Idaho Springs Mapathon

  • October 9, 2010 · 10:00 AM

Howdy Mappers! Here are some tentative plans I've made for our Saturday Mapathon in Idaho Springs: Suggestions are welcome! Meet at 10AM at the Safeway Parking Lot. This will give us plenty of room for parking. In the parking lot, we can divide and conquer Idaho Springs. I recommend we 'grid' out the area. I will have several GPS units you can borrow OR you can map with
walking papers (check it out!) OR with your iPhone with MapZen (just Points of Interest). You can map by car, bike, walk, hike or from pub to pub ;) We should probably plan to be out and about for three hours. Let's meet back up at 1:30pm at BeauJo's Pizza to reconvene. Later in October, if you would like to join us for tutorial on how to upload the data we collect, we will meet back up, hopefully sponsored by MapQuest! In the meantime, here's some homework you can do! 1. If you haven't, sign up for
OpenStreetMap and get a username and password. Go ahead and get familiar with what
Idaho Springs looks like and what you'd like to map! 2. If you have an iPhone, you can map with a cool, FREE app for OSM called MapZen. Here's a link
here. Feel free to post questions and suggestions here! Looking forward to mapping with you soon! Hurricane Coast

A great division of efforts to map the whole town! Delicious followup at Beau Jo's too :)

Daryl, you're absolutely right about OSMTracker for Android. There's also another tool for the iPhone called Trails. I highly recommend getting this app as well.
Any other device recommendations, keep them coming!

For those with Android phones (pref 2.x or higher), check out OSMTracker (http://code.google.com/p/osmtracker-android/). It's still in testing, but can create tracks, and allows audio recording for way points/POI. I'm testing it on my Moto Droid 2.2 this weekend.
