9th Annual Holiday Toy Drive

As the year comes to an end and the holiday's are on our mind, it's a time of celebration and festivities and also remembering those who are less fortunate. Each Christmas, we reach out to the children of Oakland with it's annual toy drive to benefit the Oakland Fire Departments Random Acts of Kindness program - by providing toys for disadvantaged children.

The Oakland Firefighters Random Acts of Kindness is an in house non-profit organization staffed by firefighter volunteers. The organization distributes toys to families throughout the City of Oakland during the holidays. Toys are delivered by Oakland Fire Engines directly to the homes of the families.

Our friends at The Trappist in Oakland are again sponsoring the event with a special offer. Bring a toy for a boy or girl (ages 16 and under), and get a token for any beers, (note: all gifts should be regular sized items, not a handful of marbles or a dime store toy.) If you can’t make it at the times we’ve posted, please come at any time up until 3:00 PM.

The Oakland Fire Department will be on hand with their ladder truck on display to meet with their friends at Oakland Happy Hour. We'll have some appetizers and other goodies to go along with your beer. If you like, you can climb on the ladder truck and have your picture taken with members of the Oakland Fire Department.

Providing an underprivileged boy or girl a gift for the holidays is a wonderful gesture, and a great way to open the holiday season.

Transportation: Don't drive! The Trappist is just a few blocks from the City Center BART station. If you have to drive, there's street parking.

I hope to see you for this fun event.

Cheers,

Cliff

    Hii OHHers,
I wanted to thank Cliff for putting on this great event and once again thank him for including OHH. This will most likely be the first year that he will not actually be there. Cliff we are all sorry for your loss and wish you and your family all the best. I have asked Laurel to help out with organizing in my absence and I know that Tom from Mission Dive Bars (great group--you should join) will also be there, but I would also like to ask all the OHH members who are going to please make an extra effort to keep an eye out for new OHH people and help out by introducing yourself and other people to them. We are one of several groups going so this should be a good sized event. ALSO, please remember to bring a gift for the holiday toy drive (new and unwrapped). As always have a great time and be sure to take some pictures on the firetruck its really fricken Cool! Ladies, enjoy the Firemen.
    Cheers,
    Rick

Ha, I only just realized that Rick made me the host (somehow, I had a more informal role in mind)... and that the event starts at noon, not 1:00. So I'll hopefully be getting there around 12:30. Look for the girl with shortish very red, very curly hair and come say hi! In the meanwhile, if you see people with Bay Area Beer Socials stickers on, go and say hi. They're the folks (Cliff's and Tom's group) who originally set up this meetup. See you shortly!

A close relative of mine past away last week, and I must attend her memorial during the first half of the toy drive Saturday. Tom Rapp, organizer with Bay Area Beer Socials will be standing in for me until I return later in the afternoon. Don't forget your toys!!!!

That's awesome, Alexia. Thanks so much.
Btw been hearing many kids toys have dangerous levels of lead. Something to consider when purchasing.

Walgreens is having a good sale right now on toys. Some as low as 5 bucks.

I just got my answer. I need to find a group that wants to provide toys to kids badly enough that they will help clean and repair. Kids will be happy to get used toys, just as long as they get something!

Gifts for kids: Please bring an unwrapped gift. If you show up without a gift you will be asked to exit the event, and return with a toy. No cash gifts please. Tokens are only provided for regular sized toys (not mini items or 2nd hand.) One token per person, (if you bring more than one which is thoughtful, you only get one token.) Cheers!
