Removing Weeds From a Pathway/Stairway

We meet in front of the Starbucks on Lakeshore near Mandana (as it has 2 restrooms) at 1 PM. Then at 1:10 PM we will leave by walking North on Lakeshore and cross Mandana. Then we turn left & walk up Mandana to Walker Avenue and turn right. We will walk a little further and then see the pathway on our right.

This pathway is called Davidson Way and the part we will be working on is between Vermont Street & Walker Avenue. The exact area we will be working on is closer to Walker Avenue so anyone deciding to find us at the pathway should go to that part. The address to find it on Google Maps is "Davidson Way & Walker Avenue, Oakland, Ca".

The problem for this stairway is ivy overgrowth so the best gardening tool for attendees to bring is shearers. Also, one should bring gloves, water to drink & paper towels. We will be working for 2 hours or a little less.

We made quick work of the ivy, with many helping hands. Sorry I couldn't stay longer. Met a number of people who were using the stairway and who might have been recruited for Howard's and my various Meetup groups.

We did twice the work that I thought we could do because so many volunteers, 7, showed up. 3 volunteers showed up individually who were not members of this group: Joyce, Robert & Lynn. Kerry showed up late, but she kept on working with me to 3:50 PM. Bob Branstrom and Joyce arrived first and were already working before the rest of us showed up. Bob took & uploaded photos here.

I was lame and late because I was watching soccer, so I missed the bulk of the cleaning, but it was very exciting that several people were there and the cleanup went quickly. These cleanup-meetups only last a couple of hours and are not really hard work at all, but they really make a difference for the landscape. I hope that others will attend and participate. The more people, the faster the work, and it really gives you a sense of ownership of your community.

We hope to fill Oakland's need to improve the city's many hidden pathways/stairways. At first we will remove the plant growth that is harming the pathways. Later we can do other things to improve them by such things as planting flowering plants. It is time to get local people together to improve Oakland.

We have already greatly improved 3 pathway/stairways in Oakland's Lakeshore Neighborhood plus one in the Rockridge Neighborhood.

We did our first improvement to a pathway in Oakland on Sunday, May 20th, and it was a success. 3 of our group showed up to work on our first pathway which was between Balfour & Calmar. Then a close neighbor we did not know saw us and joined us in removing the weeds. Our team of 4 did a great job as you may see in our photos.

Our 2nd pathway improvement was on June 10th at Davidson Way and an even bigger success than our 1st. For our 2nd cleanup 7 people helped in the improvement! We did an incredible amount. We filled up 23 big garbage bags with weeds, and City Hall, finally, June 15th removed the last 15 bags.

Our 3rd improvement was on Sunday, July 15, on a pathway that I named Barrows-Holman because it goes between those 2 streets. Again we cut an incredible amount of plant growth. Even with 7 of us we could not remove all of the plant cuttings.

On our 4th improvement effort, Sept. 2nd, 6 of us removed another 14 garbage bags full of weeds at Barrows-Holman. Our team of 6 was: myself, Kerry, Maureen, Cynthia Eastman, Joyce Hendy and her neighbor Phil. That event was not on our web site. We notified our members by e-mails only.

On our 5th effort, Nov. 4th, 7 of us removed 15 garbage bags worth at the site of our 1st pathway improvement & 2 other nearby pathways.

On our 6th effort, April 28th, we only had 3 volunteers and it was very hot, but we removed half of the excess plant growth on Belalp Path between Golden Gate Avenue and Buena Vista Avenue.
