Live Jazz, funk, soul and R&B at JoJo's on U Street

We jammed to some blues, we put our legwarmers on and partied with the 80's cover band, we swing and salsa danced. Now, are you ready for some live jazz, old school, Motown, funk and R&B? Yes, you can get it all at this little gem on U Street, Jojo Restaurant and Bar (http://jojodc.com/).

------------

A little bit of history on JoJo’s (as posted on their website):

Back in the golden era of jazz, musicians such as Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong found comfort in DC. Because of the strong Black community that lived around and owned businesses along the U Street Corridor, the neighborhood became an attraction for many renowned and rising musicians of that early 1900s. Similar to the later renaissance in Harlem, the richness of the Black Community in the area nurtured these artists and their then-new art form.

Yet, before there was a “Harlem” there was “U Street.” And while Harlem eventually laid claim to Jazz, she was nurtured in her infancy on “U Street.” True to the Spirit of U Street, JoJo Restaurant and Bar works hard to provide the ambiance and sound that blends the nostalgia of the early 1920s with a contemporary flair. Flavorful cuisine and nightly live music set the tone, and provide the adventure seeker with a refreshing escape from the mundane and monotonous. At JoJo, we invite you to shut out the world and its cares.

---------------

Food is supposed to be delicious, great atmosphere and amazing music. Two bands are performing on Friday: Cabasa - Brazilian Jazz (early) from 6 pm-8:30 pm followed by JUS US BAND AND SHOW with Little Robert performing OLD SCHOOL, MOTOWN, FUNK and R&B from 10 pm – 2 am. And there’s NO cover charge!

There are two levels at JoJo’s, both have adequate seating–the tables, chairs and barstools, and both feature a full bar. The downstairs is more intimate; that is where the band plays. Upstairs is mostly for dining, but you can still hear the band.

Reviews say the restaurant is rather small, so we’ll definitely have to make a reservation if we want to dine there. Post a comment if you’re interested in grabbing a bite to eat. Their happy hour goes from 5-7 pm. Yelp gives it 4 stars: http://www.yelp.com/biz/jojo-restaurant-and-bar-washington

Hope to see some of you!

It seems that Jim+1 are no longer joining us for dinner/outing. So, we have 2 slots open for dinner. If anyone else wants to join us, let me know. I will keep the reservation for 6 folks just in case.

FYI: I'll be taking a metro to the U Street station (green line). The restaurant is only 0.3 miles from the U Street Metro station (2 1/2 blocks, about 5 min walk). I should be arriving there between 6:30 and 6:45 pm. If you get there before me, the reservation is under my name for 7 pm.

    April 25, 2014

  • Ivana

I made a dinner reservation for 6 people total from 7-9 pm. We will all be seated together. After 9 pm, the manager told me we can transition to the bar area. For those of you who are not joining us for dinner, you can meet us at the bar after 9 pm. See you all soon!

Teresa and Dianne, the metro to U St seems like a real hassle. Unless we can catch a ride from someone from the group, I will most likely give up my spot.

Sorry. Late to reading comments. I've only been to one other event. So i don't think we've met.. but if you're comfortable i could swing by Vienna station on my way into DC.

      April 25, 2014

    • Paula

Bianca, that's very nice of you to offer. I decided to opt out before seeing this. Let me know how the venue is. I will catch it next time when the logistics are easier. It sounds like we won't all even get to sit together.

      April 25, 2014

  • Dianne S.

Ok. Think I will pass too.

    April 25, 2014

  • Jim L.

Ivana: I read that there is no cover charge. Do we have a table or some seats reserved? Someone wrote about eating. Can we be served something where we will be seating? Thanks. Jim

Is anyone willing to car pool or meet at a nearby metro to go to this? I live near the Dunn Loring and Vienna metros but don't mind driving to Ballston mall or somewhere else to leave from there.

    April 13, 2014

    • Teresa

Hi Paula. I will definitely metro in with you. I can meet you at Dunn Loring. I will send you an email with my contact info.
