Let's Discuss the Great Mysteries of Life!

TOPIC FOR AUGUST 24TH:  Is Normality completely relative?

Since this Event is being advertised on multiple Meetup sites, there are lots of opportunities to make new friends. We sit at tables of eight or so people ... seated in chairs so it's easy to move around and mingle with others.

Possible Future Topics:

--Are people born good?

--Is Sin a man-made concept?

--Is Free Will an illusion?

--Mandatory service - not the draft, but allowing use of Americorps, Peace Corps, military service without exceptions. Maybe even bring back the WPA. Let's get the infrastructure repaired.

Since the Restaurant is generous enough not to charge us for a room, please reciprocate by ordering at least a snack and tipping the wait staff accordingly. Also, IHOP offers a special meal deal during these hours (we'll tell you more when we see you that day).

NOTE METRO RIDERS: The Fairfax Cirle IHOP is about a one-mile walk from the Vienna Metro (South Side) Exit. Or, exit on the North Side if you'd prefer to come by Taxi.

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday, August 24th at 3:00 PM at the Fairfax Circle IHOP for lively conversation and a light bite.

The word "normal" is used in both a descriptive and a prescriptive sense. Descriptively, "normal" means the statistical norm of what most people do most of the time. Prescriptively, people use the word “normal” to mean they want their attitudes, feelings, beliefs, and behaviors to be the statistical norm.

Descriptively, it is currently normal for most people to support the enslavement, torture, mutilation, and killing of 70 billion land animals each year worldwide (10 billion in the U.S., of which 9 billion are chickens) and[masked] billion aquatic animals by eating meat, dairy, eggs, and fish. In May, 2013, Kaiser Permanente, the largest HMO in the U.S. and a $50 billion company, published three documents in which they advocate prescriptively that, for health reasons, they want to “make plant-based eating the new normal" for their 180,000 employees, 17,000 physicians and all their patients, and 9.3 million members. Because what is "normal" in the descriptive, statistical sense in various contexts are fact and not opinion, what we can talk about is what each of us wants to be normal, i.e., how we would like other people to change their thoughts, attitudes, feelings, and behaviors so that the statistical norms in various contexts are what we want them to be.
