Hills! We have endless hills in Portland that offer low impact aerobic workout for all ability levels, great for obese kids & teens! We meet at the base of hills in NW & SW and then we start walking at our own individual pace. We encourage both silent walking and those who like to talk can talk together. $4 to attend payable before we start walking or there is bulk pre-payment options available. I personally have lost 20 lbs. by walking these hills in the last few months, and I didnt change my diet that much.
I encourage people to go as slow as possible when we start so we warm up very progressively. But if you can sprint ahead of others feel free to do so, but dont assume you should or can if you dont do this everyday. Everyone will have an individual pace, so feel free to walk alone so you can tune into your own rhythm. Pay close attention to any pain you have and slow down or alter your technique until the pain goes away. Feel free to stop altogether if need be. If you get separated from the group feel free to take your own course.
There are many porta-potties along many hike routes, (thank you City of Portland, ) but of course when nature calls feel free to find run off to heed the call.
I encourage silent walking since then you are not slowing down to compensate for the extra work and distraction of talking - but it not mandatory, you can certainly socialize if that is what you like, please respect those who would like to be silent to themselves. I will walk back and forth and periodically ask folks in the group how they are doing. Walking is meditative. Also silence helps you keep track of your internal gauges that help you regulate your speed & intensity level.
You are responsible for your own health and any risks you take are your sole responsibility. I ecourage people to not listen to music or anything that can impede your hearing since some roads we walk on dont have sidewalks. Never assume you are safe. When a car approaches you from the rear always turn your head and watch the car as it passes you so you have a chance to move if necessary. Dont assume you wont get hit. Bring a flashlight for dark areas in trees. There are potholes, dips, uneven sidewalks, lots of trip hazards - please look down! Take great care! You are ultimately responsible for finding your way back to your vehicle if you get lost. Bring a notepad/pen to write street names down if you get lost easily or cant retrace your steps.
