Independence Day is much more than celebrating the birth of the greatest nation in the world, it's a celebration of the principles that went into the creation of America and a reminder of all that America fought against.

Can the principles that went into the creation of America be explained to kids and uneducated immigrants? Maybe through simple examples?

You know, that's a good question. For the kids, that's a tough one. It would all depend on if they can grasp the concepts involved I'd think, otherwise it's a nice picture story. For older immigrants coming to America, if you want to use examples I think part of it would depend on what kind of government they left behind and why they are coming to America to live. Education really shouldn't matter in grasping personal freedom. Let me ask you this, what do you see as the principles that went into the creation of America?

Perhaps one should ask: WHY did the "uneducated immigrants" immigrate?

WHY did the "uneducated immigrants" immigrate?

To find OPPORTUNITY in a NEW world, a world of NEW morality, a world where you owe yourself hard, self-reliant work, and society owes you the liberty to work, and enjoy the fruits of your work. (Meant to answer last 2 posts.)

Can this be explained to uneducated immigrants and ordinary kids?

To Gad:

Explaining it to ordinary children may pose a problem (especially given the nature of the current public school system). But one would think that if an immigrant chose to immigrate here, he would know (at least implicitly and in part) WHY he chose to do so. I think that the reasons you gave are, for the most part, the actual reasons of most immigrants, and I think there is plently of evidence that a typical immigrant grasps these, in some terms. One can, for example, directly ask a new immigrant for his reasons. You will likely hear "freedom" and "opportunity" as the major parts of his answer.

He may not be able to provide a full, explicit philosophic proof of the right reasons to value this country. But this problem is not unique to uneducated immigrants (and ordinary children). Due largely to the current state of the culture (including the educational system in place), most adults born and educated here (even ones who genuinely appreciate this country) cannot do that when asked, either.

This is a problem of philosophical re-education, which should begin at home, for our own citizens. This is a long-range project. But a natural consequence of success will be that immigrants will have a much easier access to the knowledge required grasp and prove the actual philosophic merits of this country.

I would say something to the effect of: "to celebrate the fact that America is such a great country - a country that exists for the sole purpose of providing you with the opportunity to dream and set whatever goals you wish to pursue and, through your own hard work and effort, the freedom to go about trying to achieve them. Plus fireworks are really cool as well. "
