I don't think that Todd misunderstanding is the issue. I have not found what you're referencing here, but it reminds me of past discussions. Sometimes even good-natured joking doesn't transmit well through this medium. Often genuine sarcasm's motivation is only evidenced through the nudge or wink accompanying it. Todd has made an effort to keep this message board as civil as possible and he has generally achieved the desired result. Don't judge him as a boring old guy with no sense of humor too quickly; he has mediated this message board very well for a long time now. Civility is all he is seeking and that serves us all.

Although I had tried to manage my concern delicately and without needless publication, he has chosen to make my concern public and appears to have misunderstood it.

The issue was not sarcasm, but a concern for vulgarity. I do not have a copy of what Wild Man had originally posted, however, as he has unexpectedly taken the original text down and substituted the above.

I had not asked Wild Man to take down his post, but in private I had written to him the following:

Subject: Concern for borderline vulgarity.

Wild Man,

As best I can make out, your post of today seems to be a general criticism of TV network news reporting for its base pandering to female and male viewership, having dumb reporters, and reporting the non-newsworthy.

I don't mean to be an "Old Toad," but it seems to me that in trying to make your point, the post borders on vulgarity.

Of course this is a judgment call and reasonable old men could differ. Part of my context is that we are trying to attract to our social group a very broad range of people, including single men, single women, families with children, young and old. We are also looking for participation in our events and on our public message board that would help promote interest in our social events, Ayn Rand's works, and her philosophy of Objectivism.

I am wondering if you have read any of Ayn Rand's novels, especially "Atlas Shrugged"?

--Todd

Essentially, I was trying to give a friendly warning -- educating him to our participation standards and asking for him to recognize and respect my concern.

I hope Wild Man will consider continuing to participate in our group, even if he thinks I misunderstand sarcasm or vulgarity on our message-board forum. My standards for civility, vulgarity, etc., even if some may think they are unnecessarily high, would seem a small thing to ask of our members and should not unduly limit any member's freedom to express his ideas.

"Atlas Shrugged" I usually don't like to read fictions but I will give it a try.
I might have overreacted because you send me an e-mail about reporting a concern to the meet up. You probably don't know how paranoid we immigrants are when an old white guy gets offended and threaten us to report to the authorities.
I hope you are not thinking that I just cross the border and join the meet up, because that is not the issue I am an resident alien but still an alien!!
It is just a natural survival instincts took over.
I am just not use to getting treated fairly by old white folks ;)
I guess it will take me some time to get use to that.
I know even though this is south there are still few good men and women are standing in between peace and chaos.
I understand I could be little insensitive towards others from time to time but on the other hand what sensitivity have any thing to do with the truth.
After all I am not like Ayaan Hirsi Ali, I am simply a complicated man who has a different point of view towards society.
It just doesn't look all that bright from my tinted window ;)
To be more sensitive and less offensive, I have made few changes. I hope y'all like it.

Football season is on the full swing my favorite Patriots are doing very good so are the Cowboys. Inside the NFL is one of the the best show on television, but I am amazed by the way they do the casting or the way they sit or behave on the set. Handsome Marino and Carter sit close to the camera and Costas and Collinsworth away. I am thinking they are trying to increase there female viewership.
Why there is always a dumb blond amongst the sportscasters, no I am not talking about the former porn star on the fox. Marino do act dumb but I was talking about Bradshaw. I stumbled upon Bradshaw's daughter in Keller but I didn't had a courage to ask her if her father is really that dumb or just act like one.
Talking about blonds, female news reporters and the anchors need to quit showing so much cleavage or those long legs on the air. I think all men will agree with me, because if we are looking than mostly we are not listening!!
May be network don't have to do that if they start reporting news for a change. Lesley stahl looks good only when she is swinging at bush or the tyco's former CEO Dennis the toga party Kozlowski.(Now may be that's a little over exaggeration but you get my point)
And talking about dumb, why using any cash is getting out of fashion. Using card is more smarter than using cash?
How can we ignore that when you use a card you give four percent of your hard earn income to those card companies sure it is convenient and comfortable, so does the lap dance!! ;)
You don't see people going to the strip club every day, ohh wait a minute the girls in the strip club don't take cards now do they!!
Dubai is building the tallest skyscraper in the world, let's not build any skyscraper taller than that let them have this one, just like Baseball is taken over by Latinos and Football by blacks. So let's not make Nascar an all American sport, let the rednecks have this one!! ;)

Wild Man,

"Atlas Shrugged" I usually don't like to read fictions but I will give it a try.

I hope you enjoy "Atlas Shrugged" -- it is a novel that illustrates the role of man's mind in existence and the morality of rational self-interest.

Ayn Rand's work and Objectivism are the common philosophical ground on which we want to share our social time. For this reason, on our "About Us" page, we ask that all members make an effort outside our events to learn more about Objectivism. See: http://aynrand.meetup...

While we host broad social events and we enjoy discussing everything under the sun, we want to discuss from this philosophical background and perspective.

I might have overreacted because you send me an e-mail about reporting a concern to the meet up. You probably don't know how paranoid we immigrants are when an old white guy gets offended and threaten us to report to the authorities.

I should say that I was not planning on reporting you to Meetup or any other "authorities" -- I was writing to you only as the Organizer of NTOS regarding our standards for participation in our private club.

Perhaps there is still a misunderstanding about the relationship between Meetup and NTOS and the nature of my role in organizing NTOS. This prompts me to make a separate thread to better explain here: The Relationship Between Meetup and NTOS

NOTE: Edited to move a paragraph for better order.

Wild Bill,

I think Old Toad is being nicer too you than you deserve. When I suggested that you check out NTOS I dd not realize that you had a propensity toward sexism, and racism, nor did I realize that you feel so victimized by society.

NTOS is about personal strength. You control what happens to you. No body on this board will be convinced to see you as a victim.

Of all the human beings on earth Old Toad is the least likely one to treat you unfairly. He may expel you from the group if you insist on writing about how you are a poor victimized immigrant and use that to justify foul comments towards others, but if he does expel you it will be with just cause and not done lightly. The NTOS membership (especially me) will be behind him.

Catching up on some reading.

This is absolutely BEYOND the pale. I don't know who this person is and I don't care to know.

To All,

"Wild Man" aka "Wild Bill" and aka "sean77" has quit NTOS. Meetup automatically asks a withdrawing member why he or she is leaving a group. This is how he answered:

I don't think any one is listening"

Isaac, thanks for your heart-felt support.

Pytheus, I agree, especially regarding the part Wild Man wrote above in response to my caution to him (added to his original post on this thread):

I might have overreacted because you send me an e-mail about reporting a concern to the meet up. You probably don't know how paranoid we immigrants are when an old white guy gets offended and threaten us to report to the authorities.

I am more patient than most would be. I did not expect "Wild Man" to last in NTOS, but I wanted to make sure it was not just me misunderstanding or overreacting.

This person is an example of the 2-3 out of 100 people who sign up for NTOS for which I have drafted our participation terms. For the vast majority of people, our participation terms are minimal and would go without saying.

This is also why I do not advertise the location of our events, but rather prefer that we have some minimal screening in place. I do not want to waste the time of any of our good members and participants.

To me, much more important than the very occasional issue is how we manage such situations in general, objectively and fairly, not as a matter of my whim. This is one of the reasons I have put so much effort into our structure and participation terms (formerly known as our community standards), as discussed at Updates to Our About Page.

I have not posted before but have instead read extensively through old threads and discussions, trying to get a 'feel' for the group as a whole, and get to know members through their comments. I have found "Old Toad" to be more than fair in allowing free expression of opinions. I also highly admire his ability to remain objective, to state clearly for all to see what was posted on both sides (personally, I would have a hard time not correcting the grammar *winks at Chris Jones* and punctuation as well), and to admit when he could be in error.

I agree whole heartedly with the guidelines for this forum. I think they are clear and concise, and I think "Old Toad" has mastered diplomacy.
