North Texas Objectivist Society (NTOS) Message Board › Rewards for NTOS and please update your member profile!
Last night, my wife and I went out for dinner with Tom and Pamela, another couple we have met through the North Texas Objectivist Society. We had a lovely Italian dinner with a glass of wine and shared hours of good company. It was an example of the many pleasurable rewards we have experienced for our building NTOS. I know that some of our other members have found good friends through NTOS, and this is one of the things we hope for you to be able to find, too.
During our dinner, one of the many topics that came up was how we could help promote NTOS and its rewards for participation to potential members who might see our website and consider joining us. Tom and Pam suggested that it would be helpful if more of our members would include introductions on their Meetup profiles for NTOS.
Ironically, both Tom and Pam need to update their own profiles.
I think this is a good suggestion, and I am writing to ask you to take a few minutes to update your profile on Meetup.com. The more members who fill out or update their profiles, the more vibrant our NTOS Meetup will appear to potential members. People like to explore our members' profiles and to see a friendly picture!
It's a bit convoluted, but you can find and update your profile information as follows:
(1) log into Meetup;
(2) click on the blue "Profile" link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen;
(3) click on the blue "Profile" link under your "Meetup Groups" in the lower left-hand corner of that screen; and then
(4) click "Edit your profile" next to your name to get to the editing screen. (Watch to not exceed the character-limit counter underneath each fill-in box, though.)
Your help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Finally, if you have not already done so, we would also love to know whether or not you can join us for our Winter Solstice Party on December 22, 2007 and also for our plans to go out for a fancy dinner on New Year's Eve, details TBD. Both of these events should be a lot of fun, and we hope you will be able to join us!

THE SECULAR MEANING OF CHRISTMAS
The secular meaning of the Christmas holiday is wider than the tenets of any particular religion: it is good will toward men ...
The charming aspect of Christmas is the fact that it expresses good will in a cheerful, happy, benevolent, non-sacrificial way. One says: "Merry Christmas" -- not "Weep and Repent." And the good will is expressed in a material, earthly form -- by giving presents to one's friends, or by sending them cards in token of remembrance ...
The best aspect of Christmas is the aspect usually decried by the mystics: the fact that Christmas has been commercialized. The gift-buying ... stimulates an enormous outpouring of ingenuity in the creation of products devoted to a single purpose: to give men pleasure. And the street decorations put up by department stores and other institutions -- the Christmas trees, the winking lights, the glittering colors -- provide the city with a spectacular display, which only "commercial greed" could afford to give us. One would have to be terribly depressed to resist the wonderful gaiety of that spectacle.
