"Masterpieces in Sand" - Enjoy the Leap Sandcastle Contest, food trucks, etc.

Let's meetup at Lincoln and Great highway on the seawall and walk over to the food trucks and get a bite to eat and then stroll along the beach to admire the sand art.  The judging begins at 2:30pm so we should be able to see the finished work.

Leap hosts this spirited competition between teams of architects, designers, contractors, corporations, engineers and local elementary school students each Autumn on San Francisco's magnificent Ocean Beach. The Sandcastle Contest is a fundraiser to support Leap's arts education programs (http://www.leaparts.org), but admission is free to the community.

By the end of the day, the beach is transformed into a land of magical creatures and fantastical structures.

From their website:

Approximately 3,000 people attend Leap's Sandcastle Contest each year, including: families, kids of all ages, cyclists, fans of the Ocean Beach, and supporters of the arts and education. All are welcome! The event is free to the public. Bring the family and enjoy the sand & surf, sip on a chai, have lunch from one of our gourmet food trucks, buy a t-shirt to commemorate the event, listen to music, participate in incredible raffles and just enjoy a day at the beach! Leap Sandcastle is more than a competition it truly puts into play the work of the organization in a way everyone can enjoy!

I will be bringing Shadow-doggie but will be making sure he doesn't interfere with the sand art.  Hope you can join us!

There were some pictures from the event in the Sunday Chronicle. I didn't realize the makers were all kids from local schools.

Sorry we lost you Gini - I was looking for you a lot at the first sculpture, then gave up. It was a bit hard to stay together in the crowd - We lost Brent then found him again. Anyway - it was a fun event to see, but maybe not a great meetup due to the crowd. Michelle and I got the food truck Indian food after and ran into Nancy and her friend then. Sorry we missed you Alexandra - parking did look difficult.

    Hi Karen...
People at the umbrellas were actually giving away free food - pizzas, sandwiches, etc. Do you know which sand sculptures won -- did anyone take pictures of them. I noticed a lot of Egyptian pyramids and sea creatures.

Missed the free food! That pizza looked good too - I just assumed it was for the kids making the castles - guess they had extra. Regarding the winner - we had heard it was the dragon so I labeled the photo that looked like a dragon to me. If I was wrong or if anyone has a better shot, perhaps they can post it. I did hear a news story on this - the theme was "masterpieces in sand", so that's why we saw so many pyramids and references to great artists (Michelangelo, daVinci, etc.).

I lost everyone at the sand castles, but got some great picture of the crowds and graffiti and some birds. Will let everyone know when I post them.

This looks great, but I'm not sure we can make it - we'll be at the Green Festival in the morning, but will try to swing by on the way home if it's not too late. Thanks for the heads up about this though!!

I contacted them because I wanted to know what food trucks were going to be there. Turns out its pretty limited - she told me "We'll have Kasa Indian Eatery and the Chai Cart".
That's not a huge selection (and I'm not sure what the Indian connection is), but I'll say that I see the Kasa truck downtown and there is usually a line, so it must be decent: http://www.kasaindian.com/.
Haven't tried the Chai cart - looks like just beverages but I'm interested to try it: http://www.thechaicart.com/.
It will work for me - but wanted to share in case there are people that don't like Indian food.
