Blue Angels Flight Line for Labor Day Air Show

There is nothing quite as thrilling as being on the Cleveland Lakefront watching the United States Navy Blue Angels screaming overhead as they follow the breakwall at 100 feet.    Being with dozens of other kayakers makes it even more exciting.   We are finalizing plans now.  Must bring ear plugs for flight line viewing as noise levels are excessive.   Make a full day of it.  Picnic at Wendy Park next to launch beach.  Paddle the lakefront before the Blue Angels perform.   The Coast Guard will be enforcing a No Wake Zone between the Launch at Whisky Island and our viewing spot at the East Lighthouse on the breakwall.  This will make the area safer for kayakers and all boaters.    Presently have three Meet-up groups attending.  Expecting close to fifty kayakers now...

Thanks for a great outing, I almost didn't come for concerns of parking and just general logistics... from the moment we pulled in, we were helped and advised. This continued on the water and didn't stop until we were loaded and ready to go. Being able to take my son out be so adventurous was treat... Thanks to everyone and especially Gerry for your guidance

Amanda, thanks again for your efforts on Saturday! Your hospitality tent was a great idea! It made for a comfortable place to mingle and refresh ...

Another great get together. Thanks for organizing. Some good paddling in great company into a stiff breeze with jets screaming overhead. FUN !

Nice outing. Water was much rougher than usual. Kept me from taking photos. Thanks for the pictures Chris. The Blue Angels did not disappoint. Special thanks to Virginia of Northeast Ohio Kayakers for the joint Meet-up, and to Amanda for the Boat Drop/Hospitality Tent. Safe paddling....

Asking Amanda to advise where she will be for the boat drop. Thinking it will be close to park entrance nearer to the parking lot than the beach. Our Group requires PFDs be worn. Ear plugs, the kind you insert into your ears or/and the muff type are needed out at the East Lighthouse as the Blue Angels roar overhead and you will want to use your hands for paddling or rafting-up, rather than covering your ears. Disappointed that the Coast Guard is not extending the Cuyahoga River no-wake zone out to the break wall. They will have a strong presence in the entire area, needless to say. I will be on Marine Radio Channel 16 for hailing and Channel 69 for conversation. Enjoy the day!

Gerry- Will post when I'm set up. Not sure where will be able to do so. Went to park last night and usual places taken up by bouncy rides!!!!!

You can drop gear off at usual place (go to right of traffic cones near sign on gravel) and then move vehicles back to designated grassy areas!

Hi All! I just talked to Virginia from NEOK re: the event tomorrow. As previously mentioned, I am going to set up a "boat sitting" area so people can leave their boats and gear w/ me while they are getting cars parked. Virginia is going to grab a picnic table- hopefully near shore by the volleyball courts. We are going to set up a mini- hospitality area. Organizing a potluck would be too confusing but we will have some drinks/coolers of ice, etc. You can drop off your lunch there before you paddle if you want. Donations of drinks and non-perishable food items (chips, salsa etc) accepted. If you want to take a paddling break, you can come hang out by our table and meet/socialize with other paddlers. We're asking inexperienced paddlers to stay within break wall. There is a good area to paddle just in front of where we are setting up that is fairly protected and is still a great vantage point. My cell is[masked]- call if you need help or directions!!!

There has been some understandable confusion regarding tomorrow's paddle. It is NOT going to be a regular Meet Up where everyone launches and paddles together. Because of the complexity of parking/shuttles, length of Air Show, etc, people are going to arrive and launch on their own time. There is no way we can coordinate 70+ paddlers with the anticipated Labor Day crowds. If there is a certain portion of the Air Show that interests you, plan your paddle accordingly. (For schedule, go to www.clevelandairshow.com ). The designated raft up area is by the east lighthouse. Since I know most people will not be comfortable dropping off their boats and gear, driving to parking lot and taking a shuttle back, and since I'm working through a significant thumb injury and shouldn't paddle, I am offering to be a boat sitter. I will be at Wendy Park from 11:30 until 2pm. I will watch your boat and gear while you arrange parking.

Paddlers with decent rolling skills can reduce liquid provisioning by displaying a message such as," I roll for beers." Power boaters are typically well provisioned, well lubricated and generous.

Looking at the meet the mascot FB page, the mascots start at 12 with people setting up blankets to watch the Blue Angels and meet the mascots. Considering that I'm not familiar with the area and I'll have my 13 yr old with me(he's paddled Lake Erie in water that was a bit choppy before)......what's the suggested plan? Thanks in advance for any input

Rafting-up is the best way to watch with heads turning. Thanks for the heads up David. lol

I have a bag of ear plugs. If you have your own please bring them. Holding your ears and looking up can add to instability. Between ear plugs and rafting-up it will be great fun.

Another issue...Polly and I spent a lot of time spinning our boats around, trying to see the planes as they came and went from different directions. With just two of us, we occasionally had some fender-benders, since our attention was obviously up instead of at water level. With a boatload of kayaks (see what I did there?) in residence, it's going to be....interesting, to say the least.

Thanks to you both for the heads up! Pun intended? Good info!

As an FYI, today Polly and I paddled out from Whiskey to watch the last of three practice sessions, the one which actually mimics the actual performance. They were wheels-up at 3pm and the performance ended at 340pm. The Coast Guard was preventing anyone from coming much closer than the east side of the Cuyahoga's mouth. There were a couple powerboats and jetskis, plus a few SUP's and one other yak, but we were all corralled back beyond that point. Which isn't really that great of a vantage point, I found out. You're still a long way from show center, which takes place right over the breakwall and at a longtitude which corresponds to the middle of the runway at Burke. Just an FYI so no one's disappointed. Does anyone know if that's the Coast Guard's plan for Saturday?

    Latest Update....
Lolly the Trolley will be operating as the shuttle between Whiskey Island and Parking at Edgewater Park. Parking at Whiskey Island will be very tight. With the shuttle you have the option of dropping off your kayak and parking remotely. Parking at Whiskey Island will be on the grass. The gravel lot up closer to the water will be closed. The shuttle is free. You may be inclined to make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House Air Show Watching Event at Wendy Park. The earlier you arrive the better your options. Again consider the alternative launch and parking area previously mentioned.

The noon hour posted is a suggested time to make a day of the Air Show. Our rendezvous will take place between 4 and 5 at the East Lighthouse which is shown on the event location map. Make sure you click on satellite view if it is showing map view for the Wendy Park location. We are adding the Edgewater Park Public Boat Launch immediately west of the water treatment plant as another alternative to Wendy Park which is going to be crowded. Just learned about an event called Meet the Mascots at Wendy Park. Be ready to use an alternative launch sites. I may do a Crib Crawl and then end up at the East Lighthouse. Very cool to do a Crawl and see the air show the whole time.

    August 28

    • Cindy

Is the "crib crawl" open to others as well? I wouldn't mind meeting up with a small group at an alternative location

This is an open launch time gathering. It is about a 10 minute paddle to the East Lighthouse.

Add Polly and I to the list. We were gonna head up to Maine for LDW but I've been drooling to see the Blue Angels from the water for years and this is just too good to pass up. My only concern is that the weather doesn't look wonderful for Saturday afternoon at this stage, and if the cloud cover exceeds a certain amount, the Angels will sharply curtail their show, and worst case, cancel completely. On this note, the Angels typically fly their exact show twice to practice before they do it for real, at the same time as the real show (so the sun is in the same position) so it's possible we might try to catch them Thursday or Friday.

    1 · August 27

    • Amanda Prescott B.

Would like to add that due to their precise maneuvers, the Blue Angels have a low threshold for canceling based on weather conditions. If they are the main attraction for you, keep this in mind so you're not disappointed!!!!

Hi Group, Just curious, what time do you think you'll hit the water? I don't know if I'll be able to make it at noon but since I see the picnic information, I was just seeing if I could pull off arriving a bit later and not miss the launch & paddle.

    August 28

  • Gerry H.

We are expecting around 50 kayakers from three Meet-up Groups so parking will a premium. Get there early if you want a sure spot at Whiskey Island. Alternate launch locations are Edgewater Beach which is 1 1/2 miles from our viewing location or Great Lakes Rentals on the Cuyahoga River under the Main Street Bridge (Route 2) between the Powerhouse and Shooters on the east bank of the Flats. Another possibility is doing a gear drop and parking at Edgewater Lot and shuttling. Please be open to this for other members... The Blue Angels are expected between 4 and 5. Confirming our request for a no-wake zone inside the break wall with the Coast Guard.

    August 25

  • Gerry H.

There is a request for rental kayaks. We are asking 41 North id they will bring a trailer of boats.

Also it is very important for everyone to bring hearing protection. I will bring extra ear plugs. I will also be wearing outside (ear-muff type) protection.

    August 22

  • Gerry H.

The US Coast Guard will be extending the No Wake Zone out to the lighthouses on the Cuyahoga River Channel and over to Wendy Park. This will be done by a notification to the five marinas in the immediate area, radio announcements during air show and with patrol boats. This will make it safer for all boaters, especially kayakers.

So noted Peggy. Date is changed to Saturday August 30th. Thank you. Posting start time as 2PM as the Blue Angels appear later in the afternoon. This is subject to change as we get more details. Also may add another day for the Air Show as it is a three day affair.
