Ladue Rescue Rendezvous

This is for all members to learn or practice wet exits, rescues, and re-entry of your kayak in open water under somewhat controlled conditions. This year we are going to require all kayakers who go out into open Lake Erie (beyond the breakwall in Cleveland) to demonstrate the ability to wet exit and re-enter your kayak (with assistance) and to know how to assist a fellow kayaker that has flipped over. We are encouraging all our members to attend but especially those that have never been taught how to properly perform rescues. It is imperative that you have this training if you want to paddle on big water. Without it you put yourself and others in harm's way. You will be required to have a spray skirt if you have a sit inside kayak. If you only have a sit on top you can still participate. If water temperature is to cold we may move the date to latter in the month. We want to be a more inclusive group but we are Sea Kayakers and with Sea kayaking there are inherent dangers that need to be minimized so that we are all paddling safely. If you cannot make this particular date please let us know. We will either schedule an additional training or we will figure out another way to get you the experiance you need. If you already have taken the classes please advise us of where and when you recieved it and you will be qualified to go out into the open lake. If you feel like you don't have the proper equipment to participate let us know that too and we will figure something out. If you do not get this training you by no means are excluded from the group. You just won't be allowed to participate in certain outings such as crib crawls. Ultimately we would like all our paddlers to feel comfortable no matter where we paddle and by offering this training it goes along way to help that goal out. Even if you have never wet exited a kayak and have reservations about doing so please attend. We will teach you how. If you have a lot of experiance please attend, we can all learn more in a group then we can on our own. Plan on getting wet, getting tired, and having a lot of fun....

Hey Everyone! Many thanks for attending this meet up and making it a fun success! Just a thought... many of your suggestions are great and are providing useful info to other members. However, when you post as part of an individual outing, the info only goes to those that attended. Many other members might appreciate learning from these discussions. We would appreciate it if you would post informational comments on the discussion boards!!! I will be sending out a reminder to everyone about this. We would also like to see people post their paddles if they want to have other members join them so we will have safety in numbers. Also, Gerry and I decided to talk to the folks at West Marine to schedule an informational session about marine radios. Please contact me re: preferred dates and times so we can get that on the books

I have one but have never used it. Have taken it along just in case.

  • Rod B.

But can you roll a sit on top? I can roll over but then I got to find it.

    May 11, 2014

    • Damon

You can but need to strap your thighs in like this guy: https://www.youtube.co...

      1 · May 11, 2014

    • Rod B.

Well now that is pretty cool. Never thought of the straps. Still not sure if I like it or not but still it can be done. Thanks.

Great to be back on the water after a long winter layover. Always nice to paddle with such a dynamic group, talking to friends, and meeting new people.
Gerry, I think we still need a little fine-tuning on our "V" formation, but pretty good for the first outing.
Thanks to all in the group that provided the post paddle caloric replacement.

  • Gerry H.

Great to see everyone. We will schedule another LaDue outing when the water is warmer so everyone can practice wet exiting and self or assisted re-entry. As we all know, getting back in your yak after a capsize is a basic part of sea kayaking. Will post a date soon. Looking forward to practice sessions at the Crib this summer.

Here's to Byron and Karyn, our expert rollers!

Fun day! Thanks a bunch for the food, those of you who provided; we'll make sure we chip in next time. Polly and I came home, took her Necky off the car and threw on my spurned SeaYak, then headed down to Rocky River marina so Polly could try it out for herself. Early indications are a decent match!

Hi, I am new to the group and looking forward to getting out with you. I will not be able to stay for the pot luck. I understand that we are putting in near the boat house/parking lot area, is that correct? I will be looking there for the group. Thank you.

So, am working on figuring out a pot luck lunch after the paddle. I'm bringing a veggie soup and different types of sausage to throw on the grill. (I'm also bring bowls, spoons and napkins) Karyn is bringing veggie wraps and Chai tea. So it would be helpful if other participants brought the following:
    1. something to munch on while we're getting set up
    2. drinks
    3. salad
    4. dessert

If you can bring something, please post a comment so we don't have duplicates!! Look forward to seeing everyone!

I am switching to cole slaw. I see 2 others said they'd bring snack type things.

I will bring some drinks and snacks to munch prior to potluck.

Every time I paddle with my cold weather paddling gear, I get soaking wet from sweating without ever wet exiting. Have paddled Ladue twice already this spring. It was full and seasonably cool.

I'll bring some type of chips and salsa

Looking forward to getting out on the lake with this great group. Where are we putting in (North of 422 or South of 422)? I have a commitment in the afternoon and wont be able to stay for the potluck.

    May 9, 2014

    • Peggy C.

Looks like north of 422. Glad I'll see you tomorrow.

Polly and I will be there, but likely won't stay for the potluck.

  • Peggy C.

Ok so we are just paddling?

    May 8, 2014

    • Chris F.

I will be in my dry suit, because I won't really worry about cold water at that temperature!

      May 8, 2014

    • Peggy C.

I will not be swimming. I hope.

      May 9, 2014

  • John M.

Wish I could join all of you,but I have prior commitments. Have fun!!!

    May 7, 2014

  • Rod B.

I'm thinking I need some dry gear before I start dumping myself into 47 degree water. I admit it I am a warmer weather fan.

    May 6, 2014

    • Ryan P.

You are correct. The water is to cold for the gear most of us have. That's why were just going to paddle and not do the safety rendevous. If you have a wet suit that will suffice in an emergency but not prolonged exposure. So if you have one come on out and paddle.

I've read this book about what people have done in certain situations, and the author adds their opinion on what could been done! http://paddling.about.com/od/safetyprecautions/fl/Book-Summary-Sea-Kayakerrsquos-More-Deep-Trouble.htm

I'll bring a vegetarian bean soup and some sausages to throw on the grill. Think warm food will taste good after the paddle!

      May 5, 2014

  • David

Polly and I are going to try and make this.

    May 5, 2014

  • Ryan P.

Due to the probability of some fairly cod water we are not making this our safety rendezvous. I believe we are still going to paddle and if you want to get wet your welcome too. Water today is about 50 degrees. Many of us do not have the correct clothing at that temp except in an emergency. So come out either way and enjoy a few hours getting your boat wet again .

Hi, Gerry. While I would like to (and plan to) do more rescue training (especially as I've got a new boat and need to work on rescues with that), I'm not interested in going for a swim anywhere where the water's cold until I get a drysuit. I'll be happy to get wet once things warm up, however.

My wife and I both attended Christine's self-and assisted-rescue class at BW last summer. I was able to get in using her techniques, but my wife was not and still needs more practice. I saw a nifty heel-hook technique on Youtube which looks lots easier than Christine's technique, so I'm eager to try that at some point.

In the meantime, the usual admonitions about Crib Crawls and any other serious open-water paddles are fine with us. We joined several shoreline paddles outside the breakwall last year and were fine, but I doubt my wife will ever be comfortable being 3-miles offshore and, truth be told, I'll need a LOT more time in my tippy new sea kayak before I will, as well.

Please see my update- it's now a paddle w/ no craziness planned. Hope you can join us!! I got really good at the heel hook self and assisted rescue in FL this winter. Would be happy to work w/ you and your wife on executing it when conditions are better. Hope you can both join us with the new plan!!

So, when we planned this meet up, we were being just a little overly optimistic about CLE weather!! We are now going to meet up and paddle but no safety drills or (planned) wet exits. Let's just get only our feet wet, paddle and have fun!! You can cook out at LaDue so was thinking we should add a cook-out. As team chef...just thinking we need to add a meal and socializing w/ a great group!!! Please weigh in w/ your thoughts about potluck. If people want to do it, I'll start the planning!!

    May 4, 2014

  • Damon

I plan on going to Ladue on Saturday afternoon to practice some paddling techniques and possibly a few wet exits. If anyone would like to join feel free. The water is still cold and I'll have a drysuit with warm clothes under. PM me if anyone would like to join.
