Paddle and Skills Drills at Hinckley Lake

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Come out to Hinckley Lake to paddle. With Lake Erie water temps still very cold and variable weather conditions, let's paddle at a safer venue.  Ryan and I have decided that in addition to a paddle, we will help others work on skills, whatever the group wants.  We can work on strokes and discuss safety issues.  We can also work on wet exits and rescues if people want to give it a try.  So, dress for the occasion, bring all necessary safety equipment. and come meet up with us.  We'll meet up at the boathouse with goal of paddles wet at 6:15.  Arrive at 6:00 (or before) if you need more time to get ready!!!  This is a great opportunity for inexperience paddlers to learn and brush up on their skills!!

We were going to wait until 2 pm to decide on paddle but just some additional news. Ryan talked to the Metroparks people after getting info from Christine yesterday. The roads going to Hinckley are flooded and the Boathouse is closed due to flooding. Based on this info, and the fact that the weather forecast is calling for severe thunderstorms starting at 3, Ryan and I have decided to cancel the paddle. Look forward to seeing everyone soon!

*Pout* Oh well. Hey, everybody come to my neighborhood...Little Met golf course down in the Metroparks is under about a foot of water at the moment. We can paddle around with a frisbee and play aquatic frisbee golf!

Lol, that would be fun, I don't play golf, but kayak frisbee golf, awesome idea!!!

Brought the boat to work since I work in Brecksville and I'll just hang out after work in this area till the paddle. If this doesn't go down due to weather, please announce ASAP.

Hi Amanda, I have been a part of this meetup for a year or so but have never had a kayak, so have never been able to participate.....took a class maybe 2 yrs. ago, and now finally have a kayak, so I want to start paddling and this event sounds perfect for me to get the feel back, but unfortunately have to work...will you do this again or be able to accommodate a newbie on another day?

Yes, we will be scheduling additional training and safety sessions. Look forward to seeing you on the water!

Don't worry about it Christine. I'll call the parks in the morning and sweet talk them. Definitely appreciate the heads up. Thank you .

Thanks Christine. Any idea who I can call at Metroparks to find out if we can get permission? Weather may put a stop to it anyway.

I can check with a friend at IGO. I generally talk with them about it when I am doing any wet exits. They fine to discourage the renters because too many renters purposely tip over. They may go easy on you if caught if you explain the group and purpose of the paddle.

Too bad Karyn won't be with us...no ranger would DARE interfere with us if her black Kayak of Doom was there. It's just too intimidating!

Hello Paddlers! I won't be able to join you on Wednesday, but I wanted to give you a heads up about wet exits at Hinckley. You typically have to get permission ahead of time if you are running a "class" at any of the Cleveland Metroparks Lakes. You can be fined (unless in an approved class situation) for intentionally rolling/flipping your kayak. I would love to run a Level 2 class and get everyone a bit more experience with more self rescue techniques on the water, braces and tows, etc. in the near future if there is interest.

Fined for practicing safety measures. This reminds me of the time I got a ticket on my motorcycle for wearing ear protection...

If you do not want to get wet it would still be a good idea to come. You can at least watch the assisted rescues so you know what to do in an emergancy. Rescues in hard conditions sometimes require more then one rescuer. Helping learn to assist and what to do helps us all stay more safe on the water.

I might miss this as I need to go out of town for the day. Where will you be doing drills in the event I am 20 minutes or so late? Right in front of the boathouse?

    May 13

    • Ryan P.

More then likely we will be fairly close to the boathouse. If your going to be late just post to the website that your on your way so we know to keep an eye out for you.

This is in lieu of the Wendy Park paddle then?

Water temp at Hinckley is about 60 degrees. Why don't we go there and practice some strokes, wet exits, rescues, or anything else our members want to work on. I'm not sure everyone signed up has proper equipment for 47 degree water. I'd rather everyone paddle that wants to. Any other opinions?

Would that be near Hinckley Lake?

The Lake Erie water temperature is currently 47 degrees. As an experienced boater, I urge extreme caution to you all.

Dry suit for me when water temp is that low, even if we just get a little near Wendy Park!

I can't believe I have to cancel due to work obligation, but it is what it is. Have a great time - wish I could be there.

    May 11

  • Karyn K.

Yes...And with my dry suit using good common sense to bail out of the trip if the waves are any more than 2 ft at this time of year. There are lots of warm days ahead.

    May 11

  • Karyn K.

Can't wait to join you. Since the water is cold, I would recommend suits or pursuits for anyone venturing out past the breakwall with the ability to use your intermediate paddling skills. At this time of year, I paddle with caution. If you are new to the s
