Circumnavigate Kelley's Island - Poker Paddle

Let's Meet Up for the 2014 Kelley's Island Poker Paddle.  This is a fundraiser for the local Audubon society.  Last year's entry fee was $10,  but I think it would be nice to kick in a little extra since it's for a good cause and is 100% volunteer run!  We should plan on going up and camping Friday night, then paddling Saturday morning at 9:00 am.  There are 5 take-out spots where volunteers will ferry you, your boat and gear back to the campsite if you decide to drop out for any reason.  It was a great experience last year so please join us!!!  We will post more details as the event date nears.  Feel free to post comments as to whether you wish to make it a full weekend event or to propose other related activities!

EXPERIENCED KAYAKERS ONLY... Spray skirt, PFD, self and assisted rescue proficiency required as minimum. Distance: Approx. 12 miles, near shore, with 5 stops.  You must have your boat properly registered in OH as well.

Poker paddle is postponed to Sunday at 8:30. Lots of hikes forming up today instead. We're also thinking of a short paddle late this afternoon.

National weather service issued a rip current alert for most of Lake Erie. Waves building to 5 to 7 feet by noon today then subsiding to 4 to 6 ft by this evening. By Sunday it should be back to 2 to 3 footers. I haven't heard anything from the organizers yet but if I do I'll let you know.

If your by yourself i wouldn't go. Waves may not be to rough when you get there but they'll quickly build from 9:00 on.

I just talked to the organizers of the event. The event as of right now is still on. Depending on which weather app you use you get a different forecast. That being said the two I checked had sustained winds of about 20 MPH by 11:00 AM tomorrow out of the NW. If that holds true they will be doing a smaller event on the South Side of the island. If the winds shift more westerly they will cancel the event all together. Sustained 20 MPH winds will put the waves at 4 to 6 feet on the North and West side of the island per the organizers. The Park Ranger will be making the call, probably not until tomorrow early morning.
Stay tuned for more information as I receive it.

Ryan I am still planning on sailing from Marblehead marina. Still don't know if I will be part of the group but at least I will be out there. I do have a radio and monitor chanel 16. Hope to see someone over by Kelly's island. Just packing my crap. The waves don't bother the Hobie. Actually when they get over 6 feet starts to get real fun. Rod.

Amanda thanks for the warning. I might put in at the Lakeside Marina Hobie dealer and sail the thing across to Kelly. If I make it by nine good if not on big deal. Don't think I will stay the night but be nice to see everyone again.

One year I tried to save on the ferryboat ride by loading three boats on one car and parking two cars at the ferry and going across in one car. Sounds like a plan but...they charged to park the other two cars at the ferry parking lot. Then I had to consider the other two people for the return trip. It was windy with rain so one guy wanted to go home early. Now I bite the bullet and go over on the ferry by myself. This way I come and go when I want and not have to take a committee vote. If you have a bike on the back of your car...they charge you extra so add that cost to your ferryboat ride. The price of the ferry is one way...if you want to come back...double it.

Rod- You might want to check their website and call them. I think they charge extra for a trailer- just so you don't have any surprises!

Prefer the buddy system on the crossing. Please find someone to paddle with and have a marine radio available.

So. Has anyone paddled to Kellys from Lakeside? It looks like Lakeside Dock would be a good launch site, away from the ferry route. Parking is the unknown.

    September 10, 2014

    • Ryan P.

I know a few people that do it. For some reason it tends to be a pretty choppy 4mile plus crossing. Plus the campground is on the opposite side of the island so it becomes a 10 mile plus paddle. Most people don't get there early enough on Friday to paddle the distance. Thus the majority take the ferry.

You can paddle to Kelleys by launching from the Mazurik State Access to Lake Erie located on North Shore Blvd. near Lakeside. There is plenty of parking. I could not find the address but it's next to Holiday Cove[masked]

I have reserved and paid for Site #94 for Friday and Saturday nights. I am bringing my bike and tennis shoes to take a couple of the nice hikes on the island and do some biking for which Kelley's is excellent. I am staying both nights. ETA 3ish or before on Friday. I believe another tent can be pitched on the site. ETD Sunday morning early.

I go every year and camp with friends. Last year my friends and I were the last to return and got the last of the hot dogs. This year I shall attempt to break my record...

Did we save any any campsites???? Or our we sleeping on the beach in our yaks?

    August 1, 2014

  • Ryan P.

Good question!!!! Did anyone book any campsites? To answer your question Alice the campsites have to be booked for Friday and Saturday night even if you only stay one night. Last year I don't think anyone stayed past Saturday afternoon with our group but there were about 80 kayakers there last year and many of them did stay both nights. The island is a pretty neat place to explore if you get there early or want to stay through Sunday.
