Swimming in any kind of open water (lakes, rivers, oceans) can be daunting and scary but it doesn't have to be. Open water swimming is the most natural and beautiful way to use your swimming muscles. This group is designed to get you out of the pool and into the ocean.
Open water swimming, especially in the ocean, is different from swimming in the pool and can seem counter intuitive. I will teach you how to read the water, enter and exit safely, and deal with the conditions of the swim.
This group is good for those who can swim at least 200 meters non-stop in the pool but who are timid in the ocean. It is good for those who wish to do their first triathlon or their first ocean triathlon or who want to improve the triathlon swim performance. My goal is to make you feel comfortable in the open water.
I will offer classes in open water skills you can practice in the pool. Classes in protected open water areas that acclimate you to the differences in the types of water you experience in the ocean. Classes in reading waves, entering and exiting through the waves, and dealing with ocean currents. Classes in triathlon specific open water swimming including swimming with others, drafting, sighting, and buoy turns. The ocean classes will build towards rougher conditions, colder water, and longer swims.
I will accompany you during each lesson and be there to help you through them. I am an ITCA certified triathlon coach and have been doing open water swims for the last 15 years. I have competed in all distances of triathlon in a variety of swimming environments. Open water swimming is my favorite part of triathlon and I look forward to sharing my excitement and passion with you. I DO ask everyone to sign waivers because we will be swimming in a natural environment.
