Gold Coast Hinterland Day Trip - Saturday

  • Jun 30, 2012 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

GOLD COAST HINTERLAND

The Plan:

Meet at Beaudesert and head east and up through the Gold coast hinterland areas which will include O'Reilly's, Mount Tamborine and Lamington National Park.

The trip will take us through some of the iconic townships and taking us through some much less known tracks that are still open.

There will be a walk through the rainforest at one of our stops so please bring your walking shoes if you are keen for that walk. There will be a number of stops through out the day at lookouts, creeks, rock pools and water falls.

Our first part of the drive is up duck creek rd which will take us straight up the western side of Lamington National Park ending up at O'Reilly's where we will do the "tree tops walk" which has 9 suspension bridges up to 16 meters above ground. A bird's eye view is obtained from a deck 30 meters above ground in a fig tree over the walkway. We will then have some free time to relax and explore the O'Reilly'S area (approx 45min). There is a cafe there if you want a snack. Bird feeding is also available for those keen. We will have an early lunch here at the BBQ on the LHS of the road adjacent to the large plane. The time frame will be advised on the day (approx 11:45) sausage sizzle.

After O'Reilly's we will head down the road (bitumen) for about 1:15min which is one of the most scenic hour and 15 minutes on bitumen you will see in a long time ending up at Mt Tamborine via Canungra. We will stop along the way with an arvo tea break when we arrive at Mt Tamborine. After an early arvo tea we will head into Tamborine National Park again and explore an area facing east towards the Gold Coast. This section has more scenic 4wding with many options available for those keen to take on some more challenging loops (challenging sections always optional). We will stop and check out the water fall and rock pool upon arival here which is a great spot to come back to in summer (4wd access only).

We will conclude our trip at the Micro brewery and Cheese Factory at Mount Tamborine. If you want to indulge you can..... cheese platter $25, 4 beer tasting tray $10, food menu available as well. Or just have a look around, there are tours available depending on the time we arrive, they will do a group tour anytime. The group will put on one free cheese platter upon arrival.

Upon ariving at the information center at Baudesert plase make final checks on your vehicle and gear. Ensure you are fueled up and ready for the pre trip chat.

Please ensure you do your research on traveling times to our meeting point, allowing yourself plenty of time.

Please ensure you sign in to the trip book upon arrival.

The organiser for each trip will be available for any questions at the meeting location or please feel free to post up any questions prior to the trip.

Thanks for a great day with you all, wonderful to see many new members in the group coming along on this trip. Hope you all enjoyed the day. The Gold Coast Hinterland is certainly a very diverse area, the brewery cheese factory at the end was also a perfect finish.

Awesome day guys, sorry for slowing the trip down...definitely time for some new rubber... :D This video's not particularly exciting, but you'll understand why Neil is called Bad Ideas Bear after hearing his maniacal laughter...http://youtu.be/MgQUppZ9ltY . Little bit of swearing so not particularly child friendly.

Hi Andrew/Steve, Sorry to pike out at the last minute. My back is causing me further grief. Best to rest and be well for Xmas in July...because that's one I've been really looking forward to. Have a lovely day, hope the sun comes out to play. Leash.

We are all go for the trip tomorrow. See you all there by 8am. The trip phone number is[masked] (Andrew)..... Some advice for tomorrow is to bring a spare pair of shoes just in case as it is still a bit wet in parts.

    June 29, 2012

  • Andrew S.

Yes its looking like being a bit slippery on Saturday so it will offer a little bit of safe fun. The sun should be out tomorrow and dry up the top layer for us Saturday to ensure we dont damage any tracks. Looking forward to it. It will be great timing after all this rain to see the sun out and the chance to visit these very scenic areas. The water falls and creeks will be flowing well.....

    June 28, 2012

  • Bruce M.

Getting excited now about this first trip with the crew.... :D
Looking like the tracks might be a little sloppy....

  • Andrew S.

Trip update...... the weather is looking good for the weekend so we are all go.. There is a bit of rain through the week some of the sections of tracks may be a bit wet still through the rainforest sections. Looking forward to the day. If everyone can ensure you are on time at our meeting point as we will be leaving on time. Shaping up to be a great fun day.... See you all there.

    June 25, 2012

Jase, all good the tracks are ok and the sections that are more difficult have a short alternative track. A stock factory vitara did all of the tracks on the reci except a few of the difficult ones that are optional.

Andrew, Mick may need to work this weekend. I had so much fun on the weekend, that I wouldn't mind coming myself. The issue is I haven't been behind the wheel in 4wd mode - ever. Would this track be easy enough for a first timer if I decide to come myself? Jo
