The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks -- Rebecca Skloot

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Does this start at 7pm or 6pm tonight? The event header above says 6 but the email reminder I received yesterday says 7pm....

Do any of you follow RadioLab? I am way behind on my listening, but this is sitting in my podcatcher: UPDATE: Famous Tumors "When we first released Famous Tumors, Rebecca Skloot's book about the life and legacy of Henrietta Lacks (and her famous cells) had just hit the shelves. Since then, some interesting things have happened to both Henrietta's cells and her family. So, 4 years later, we have a newly updated show!"
Looks like it will be interesting to listen to, after having read this book.

I'm also glad this was chosen, since it's been kicking around my list too.
See you all in a couple of weeks!

I am loving this book. I'm about half way through it and it is hard for me to put down. I am also reading Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen due to the comments that were made at the last book club.

Hello! I just joined, and I am interested in coming to your next meet up. I'll be on vacation, otherwise I would be attending the April one.

Any ideas on what the May book will be yet?

Hi Kateland, We choose our books for the next month at our monthly meetup. So, we will be choosing on the 8th and I will post whatever we decide on at that time. If you want to vote for your favorite for the month, go to the More menu on the MeetUp page and then click Polls. There is an open poll there about what to read next month and it has the 3 choice options. Welcome to the group!
