Queen City Underground Tour Photo Shoot

Trip details have now been finalized and are noted below. Read carefully.  You will need to pay as you RSVP with your own credit card or Paypal.   Read the Refund Policy before you pay.

Get out your flash or high ISO camera for a guided underground tour of old Cincinnati. Join us to learn about Cincinnati’s hidden history on one of the Top Five Underground Tours in the US*. Enjoy a stroll through Over-the-Rhine, home to America’s largest set of historical landmarks. Visit buildings in the Gateway District that were home to over 130 saloons, bars and beer gardens, and theaters that hosted the iconic entertainers Charlie Chaplin and Wild Bill Hickok. Then, descend below the city streets to a hidden crypt where some of Cincinnati’s first residents were buried. Next return underground to explore newly discovered tunnels vital to Cincinnati’s brewery heritage. Finally end the tour with a visit to recently opened Christian Moerlein bottling plant and tap room through another tunnel.

*National Geographic’s Top Five Underground Tours in the U.S. 2012

Cost: $25 (use OVCC's paypal account and pay in advance using your credit card.  There is a processing fee so we are rounding up to $25 per person, any excess will go toward getting a club projector (one day!).  We have now submitted a check for the entire amount to American Legacy, at their request.  No refund unless OVCC cancels the event (we'd probably reschedule if that happens).

Parking: there are two great places to park.  The first is Mercer Commons garage.  Located on the east side of Vine between 13th and 14th streets.  The other good place is Washington Park garage.

The tours will begin at the Cincy Haus 1218 Vine Street Cincinnati OH 45202.  Our group of 47 will split into two smaller groups and head off in opposite directions - so we don't all get in each other's way.  I will email any potential changes a few days prior to the event, so keep an eye out for that.  If nothing else you will get a reminder.

TRIPODS are allowed, we are asked to be careful moving them in the tunnels.

Weather - you will be outside and inside so plan for the weather conditions.

After Tour Dinner: we finish up about 4 pm, if you want to do dinner afterwards I am going to look for a restaurant in the revitalized Over the Rhine entertainment district.  Send me an email if interested so I can get a quick head count.

It was a great shoot. I still need to look through my shots.

    Great photo opportunity

I agree with Rod, the title was a little misleading, but then where would the sizzle be? I still enjoyed it very much and look at all the photos posted! I think that alone speaks for itself. Thanks Fred. You did an outstanding job!

Thanks to all who made this a very fun and informative photographic adventure. It's amazing how we all can spend time in a city like Cincinnati and forget at times how much history is everywhere around us.

Just reviewed all the images from this Meet Up. It is interesting to note the difference in the way things were observed and the things that were found by some and missed by others. A particularly educational experience for me, photographically speaking.

    Loved it!

Thanks, Fred, for getting this up and going. I'd like to do this again.

Had a great time, my wife and I really enjoyed it and the tour guides were fantastic.

    October 14, 2013

  • Rod A.

My wife and I really enjoyed this. However, the title we found misleading. There wasn't much underground and what there was didn't seem all that interesting (to us at least). Again - we really enjoyed it - but it was the OTR history and seeing the buildings that we liked. For example, the courtyard at 1513 Vine and the discussion about what daily life was like was great.

On Friday I have been told that I will be in oversea business trip from mid October. That totally changed every single weekend plan I made since September. I had to cancel this one as well...

sorry to hear that Atsu - good travels, bring your camera overseas!

    October 7, 2013

  • Fred H.

Going to consider this Tuesday midnight to be the cutoff for this event. Will send out an email to the club notifying of the deadline. Currently at 43 confirmed + 1 or 2 who already had tix.

    September 6, 2013

Just for information's sake, I went on the Traveling Cosplay shoot (Cinci Comic Expo) run by Legacy. We had a great time, but it is a bit of fast walking in places, and if they take you in some of the more haunted houses/churches, which are amazing, some of the stairs are steep. They're very good about helping you out, however. Some of the photographers in the cosplay shoot carried lighting equipment and cameras, and managed it. Enjoy!

    September 29, 2013

  • Kathy

I can't wait. I think Cinci is a great little city and has so much hidden character.

    September 10, 2013

  • Peggy N

So sorry to miss out on this (due to previous plans). Hope it gets planned again later! Have a great time, all.

    September 3, 2013

  • John F.

I just got an email from Fred saying that my response is changed to Not going. I have been on the waiting list and I know I didn't change my response. Any reason why that happened?

    September 3, 2013

    • Fred H.

Read above and below. We are now switching from "checking for interest" to "make a real RSVP and pay at that time" mode. If I didn't do this very smoothly chalk it up to my inexperience. If we have a ton of persons on the next waiting list I will consider setting up another tour for that group (but won't lead it).

      September 3, 2013

  • Keith

I've wanted to do this tour for a while now, really looking forward to it.

    August 29, 2013

  • Karen D.

I have never done this tour but it sounds great!! Please count me in!!

    August 29, 2013

  • Connie S.

I did this tour several years ago, so for that reason (and a potential conflict) I'm not signing up for this round--but it was great fun, lots of cool things to shoot. Seems to me, though, that 60 people on this tour would be getting in each other's way in trying to capture images, especially in the underground areas. I did the brewery tour with a group and found this to be an issue. Maybe two smaller groups? Just something to think about.

    August 29, 2013

    • Fred H.

FYI, the tour automatically splits 60 into two groups, which is why I put the list at 60

      1 · August 29, 2013

    • Connie S.

Good to hear that, Fred. Maybe I can do the tour again at another time.

      August 29, 2013

This went fast! I will wait to see if I get added later. It's on my calendar in case I get lucky.

I look forward to this tour and meeting the other members. It should be extremely interesting.

Can't make it ... just getting back that day from some time in the Smokies with good (and neglected) wife Nan -- but I've taken the tour and been very happy with a number of the photos. http://ekhphoto.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=22560940&AlbumKey=Q8dB85
