Carew Tower Observation Deck Sunset Photo Shoot - Take 2!

Dan Pater has graciously agreed to sponsor this second meetup for the Carew Tower sunset.

Located at the corner of Fifth and Vine Streets, across from Fountain Square, the Carew Tower observation deck offers an unfettered 360 degree view of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.  Let's meet at Carew Tower Observation Deck and shoot some cool images of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The Tower closes at 7PM, so don't be late!!

The Carew Tower itself is a study in old merging with new. Modern elevators transport guests only as high as the 45th floor. A trip to the observation deck requires a ride in a phone booth-sized elevator to the 48th floor and a climb up some gray steel stairs to the observation deck. Also, don't miss the Rookwood Pottery tiles in the building's lobby.

Here's a link to information about parking, the Carew Tower and fees, etc.

Here is a well done 360 interactive panorama of the view from the top of the Carew Tower to get you started.  This is basically what you will see.

360 Pano from the Top

Details:

The $2 fee has been unchanged since 1994 - what a deal.  Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 am that Sunday morning and you "fall back" which enables us to shoot late afternoon, the sunset, and finally the night time with the city lights.  You can't get this range during DST.

Twilight:     5:27 PM

Sunset:      5:55 pm (0-6 deg below horizon)
Civil:         6:28 pm  (6-12 deg below)
Nautical:    6:59 pm (12-18 deg below)

• Tripod are A-OK

• Get there early enough to get daylight high angle lit shots of buildings

• It can be windy and temp will be cool

• No Food or Drinks allowed on the deck

• Has a railing around the outside but tripods can see over it

• I will have a summary sheet on how to shoot sunset shots for anyone who cares for one.

Bonus Shots

After shooting the night lights head down to Fountain Square and get some Tyler Davidson Fountain shots across the street.

Great! Haven't been up there for a while and never to take photos. Asked a few of the attendees for advice and they were very friendly and helpful!

Great venue for getting photographs of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. People were all friendly and polite. My wife and I had a great time. The weather was great for this time of the year.

Yes, yes! Please do this outing again. So sad to have missed this glorious day up there.

My first time to this beautiful location, so the experience was invaluable. I now know how easy this is to visit, so I will be back on my own when the clouds are more picturesque. Thanks so much, Dan!

Very enjoyable evening. Carew Tower is a great venue. Not a great sunset, but that was probably my fault. Clouds run when they see me coming.

Thanks Dan for organizing this outing. Have not been up there in 30 years. Great outing.

Not enough clouds. Need to do this again.

Great! My first meetup, and my first time up there. Met a few people and had a great time.

I had to go out of state...my sister passed. I am giving up my spot. I hope that there will be another time to do this soon.

Weather was good for mid-November, wish we had more spotty clouds for the sunset, but I always say that!

Wish I had remembered that I was off tomorrow. I changed my RSVP thinking it would be a late night for me getting back to Frankfort on a work night.

  • Maggie P.

Sorry I won't be able to make it. My knee is hurting bad but didn't really do anything to it. Who knows. So I have given up my spot. Changed RSVP. Have fun!

I noticed the Observation Deck is listed as closing at 5pm, therefore assume no access or re-access after that.

Rich, they are open to 7 pm on Saturday-Sundays and you go get in and out without restriction.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it either. I hope you guys do this again sometime soon!

Sorry, guys, a conflict arose in my life tonight and I can't get around it. I have been trying to do this shoot for a couple of years now and it never seems to work for me. One of these days.....

Have a conflict and won't be able to attend. Hoping everyone has a wonderful time.

While I really wanted to do this, I am recovering from pneumonia and want to give someone else a chance.

Earlier someone noted there were no bathrooms available in the building. Technically that was correct, however from the concourse you can enter the Netherland Hilton hotel and proceed up the stairs case to the third floor (95%) or fourth floor (5%), go left and down around that short hall.

Any suggestions to camera lenses, etc. to bring for the meetup?

    November 6, 2013

    • Dan P.

If you want long distance shots, bring a long (telephoto) lens (I'm bringing a 400mm). If you want to do panoramas, bring a "normals lens" that is wide enough but doesn't distort (I'm going to use my "kit" lens of[masked]mm at about the middle position). If you want the curved horizon that some have shown in the gallery, use a fish-eye (I'm bringing that because Rick as specifically asked for it. I'd have brought it anyway.) In other words, bring the lens you want for the kinds of images you want to take away. ---------------------------------------------- A tripod, of course, and the corresponding remote (otherwise use the camera's timer. Lens hoods and polarizers. ---------------------------------------------- These would be the essential tools, I'd say, to do what I'd like to accomplish.

A spot just opened up. I can't make it after all. Best of luck to everyone.

I am guessing that the wait list has not changed? Had hoped to make this one. Is the observation deck open to public all of the time or is this a special arrangement? it is a 90 mile drive for me, but worth it!

    November 6, 2013

    • tim m.

Observation deck is open every day until 7pm. But sunset is only before 7pm during standard time parts of the year.

      1 · November 6, 2013

  • James "Aldo" R.

One thing I learned last week is that there's lots great stuff to shoot long before and long after sunset, but the sun only touches the horizon for a few fleeting moments - for THAT shot you need to be prepared, ready and waiting.

    November 6, 2013

  • Dave L.

One detail to be aware of is that there are NO public restrooms in the building, so plan accordingly.

Thanks for that info Dave, That definitely kills it for me.

Can you tell me how many steps there are from 48th floor to observation deck. Bad knees!

I heard on Ch 12 that sunset was 5:34.

    Is the Observation Deck enclosed?

    October 28, 2013

    • Fred H.

The Cincinnati dome has not started construction yet so currently there is only an atmosphere covering the observation deck ;-)

The 360 Pano is awesome...like riding a wild roller coaster.

Spectacular views, and I'll be happy to look at everyone's images after the fact, but I would not be going up there, even if I were free that day. Y'all have fun!

    October 27, 2013

  • Eugenia M.

Sorry, I am out of town that day.

    October 27, 2013

  • Dan P.

Y'all just watch the weather, ok? Hopefully we'll be as lucky, meteorologically speaking, as the folks from the first run. Think panorama, among other things, so bring what you need..
