Balluminaria

  • Kick off the holidays with this annual hot-air balloon glow event around Mirror Lake in Eden Park. Up to nine hot-air balloons are lit up after dark for a spectacular view. Stay warm with a cup of Hot chocolate and be entertained by strolling entertainers. A fun event for the whole family. Come and photograph with us or bring the kids to meet Santa if you want. We generally congregate on the east side of the lake about the middle.

Looks like there will be road closures this year. If I interpret the map correctly, you will not be able to drive anywhere near the lake on Eden Park Drive or Fulton Ave. I don't know what time the road closures will occur. Here's a link to the map provided by Cin Park Bd.

I ended up going to Mt Echo park. We should have a "what did you take photos of instead" folder. :-)

I might still go to the Art Museum. It is a great structure and I love the artwork. I was going to go early and hit the museum anyway.

In case you were thinking of bringing a tripod, they won't let you take one in there unless you have an escort. At least not upstairs, but I think not downstairs, either. Check in at the desk before bringing any equipment in there. I didn't know this when I did a shoot a couple years ago, and I had a volunteer chasing me down the hall!

Thanks. I have actually been often. It is one of my favorite places. Good to know about the tripod though. I never tried to take one before, but will have one with me today.

Thanks for the info Tim and others, this is definitely disappointing, but at the same time it's understandable. It is just too dangerous to the crew and bystanders to try to setup a balloon with the predicted wind speeds.

That is my favorite event of the year!!! Thanks for the info.

That what I just heard, that the Balluminaria on Saturday has been cancelled, as of 12:30pm Friday. I heard it on 700 WLW, due to warnings of high winds.

I will also be there, weather permitting. Here's what I found on a website that describes the various Ohio balloon events:

    http://www.ohiotidbits.com/6.ht...
"NOTE: Balloon launches are DEPENDENT on the WEATHER--They can NOT launch if winds are above 10 mph. FAA prohibits launch if storms are approaching within 60 miles- The festival people WANT TO LAUNCH but final control is up to the FAA Federal Aviation Administration." The most recent forecast still predicts 15-25 mph winds, so prospects aren't very good.

Thanks for the research on this, Debbie.

I too have heard that if it's windy the balloons won't be fired up. What a shame. So if anyone knows...please keep us wind wary worriers posted.

I am hoping to make it down there pending the weather forecast, right now they are predicting 15-20 mph winds, which could mean the balloons would not be setup. I think about 5-7 mph is the most allowable even for a glow.

I went in 2010 (perfect weather) and took balloon pics. In 2011 I took mostly crowd shots. Missed last year, so hoping to attend again this year. You see some great reactions in the crowd, especially from kids.

Plan to come to this, but I've already RSVPd through another group, so I won't do that here, to avoid multiple texts/e-mails.

Thanks for the heads-up on the road closures.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
