Early Morning Buffalo Shoot at Vista Grand Ranch

UPDATE:

I've communicated with Dave and everything is still arranged for this Saturday morning.  Try hard to be on time so we can provide any rules to everyone about where to go and what to shoot during our visit.  I will put some sort of sign at the entrance so you drive down the right driveway.  This is a working ranch, be sure to wear boots that can get a bit dirty and have a clean pair for your car and for the breakfast if you are participating.  Weather now calls for a 20% chance of rain so dress and protect you gear accordingly.  I have 25 RSVPs for breakfast, which will be just down route 132 in New Richmond.  After reviewing several possibilities our best bet is the Frisch's at 1052 Old US 52 near an IGA and McDonalds.  They have a breakfast buffet that will help facilitate our number.

Join us for a frosty March morning to shoot buffalo at the Vista Grand Ranch run by Cindy Cassell and David Uible, in New Richmond, Ohio. The 171 acre ranch used to be a dairy farm, however, they settled on raising buffalo which require less supervision than dairy cattle.  RSVPs will open 60 days in advance of the event.

Why so early on a cold morning? Our goal will be to capture the buffalo with steamy breaths and possibly ice on their shaggy coats.  We will be allowed to photograph the large barn, chickens, dogs, and peacocks.  To learn more about Grand Vista Ranch see this web-site:  http://www.vistagrandranch.com/

In exchange for this opportunity I have offered David to give him copies of our photos.  Like we did for the Ohio Valley Carriage Club I will create two photo albums - photos you are happy to let Vista Grand Ranch have and one for those you prefer not to give.

Due to the expected interest this meetup is limited to OVCC member photographers only with signups starting 60 days before the event.

If weather dictates (snow for example) the meetup date will be adjusted.

Directions: see the Meetup Map link above.  Located at 2652 Ohio Route 132 in New Richmond, Ohio 45157.  The Ranch entrance is the long driveway just above the "A" below to the area in the lower right, and is located between Goebell Hill and Riebel Ridge roads.  Or: coming in from US52 the driveway is 2.2 miles north of SR 132, if from SR 125 it is 5 miles south.

Entrance to Vista Grand Ranch

Parking: Once you get to the ranch follow the driveway until you get the circle near the large barn and park in a field at the top of the driveway to keep the cars out of our photographs.

Breakfast: there are two possibilities for a 10 am post-shoot breakfast which I will post later once the RSVPs start coming in with "yes" for breakfast and I get a headcount.

FYI: If you are interested, you can buy their buffalo meat at 8 locations in the Greater Cincinnati, as identified at their web-site.

Passed many of your comments on back to Dave thanking him for his hospitality. Per the original announcement in a couple of weeks I will copy those photos people are willing to share with Dave on a DVD. If you do not want me to share then put "(DNS)" in the caption and I won't provide that one. I will also note to him that if he wants to use any commercially then he will need to contact the photographer for arrangements.

Fred, thanks again for organizing a winner of a Meet Up. Please share our appreciation to Dave (and Gus) for being great hosts and opening up their farm to a bunch of photo crazy strangers.

Hey Debra - I liked your Cardinal Picture... I took some of a cardinal too, but yours was better!

    March 9, 2014

  • Debra P.

I had a great time. Thanks for putting this together, Fred!

P.S. I accidentally posted a Northern Cardinal photo instead of the buffalo. I just deleted it. Sorry for the confusion!

      I thought that was a kind of weird-looking buffalo . . . ;-)

They didn't get too close which suited me just fine as they are a lot bigger than I.

Wonderful opportunity to get relatively close to buffalo!

    • Fred H.

We'll see what is posted but I feel that those who pushed in closer either in the field (with Dave's permission) or by working around to the far side will show some cool shots - let's see them!

      March 8, 2014

    • Ina

I worked around to the far side and it was worth it. Posted some of my best shots.

Walking around the pasture definitely paid off... It was a great (but muddy) time. I was definitely close enough to the buffalo, any closer would have been way too close for comfort.

A huge thank you to Fred for organizing everything! I would love to go back out this summer when everything greens up! :)

Great crowd of people; the ranch was awesome - the buffalo seemed a little camera shy! I would certainly do this one again - didn't come home with "THAT 1 SHOT" I was hoping for... maybe next time. THANK YOU FRED for setting this up and THANK YOU DAVE for allowing us to come out.

Last time we were right up on the fence. That's not to say that the buffalo will be that close, but some did get pretty close. We were able two walk the fence line and shoot further down the hill. I remember a couple of really nice shots that came from that day. There is also a really nice dog and some chickens as well. You might have to ask the lady to bring the dog out. He's very nice.

So can we, or can we not bring non club members?

    January 22, 2014

    • Fred H.

Kathy, this is open to OVCC Club Members, if you have a spouse who will not be shooting then that person could come as they won't be adding to the parking or taking up fence space - hope this helps

      March 6, 2014

Does anyone know how to figure out how far down on the waiting list you are?

Using tools upper right you are at least number 15 on the wait list, not guessing you will rise enough during last minute cancellations, sorry

We should start finalizing the car-pool details from the N to NE I-275 loop. Who's interested? I am. (Loveland/Symmes/Montgomery area)

Mason area is close to me too and Milford is on the way.

I am available to car pool, but have not heard from any others. If you are still open to car pooling reach me by email offline as to suggested location to meet. I'll be coming along I-275 from West Chester.

      March 4, 2014

  • Fred H.

Ray, the list did not open until 90 days before the event date, so even though you may have thought you signed up the RSVP list was not open until January.

    March 3, 2014

    • Fred H.

I should note this was well spelled out in the meetup notice.

      March 3, 2014

That is what I thought you said. I was at Carew Tower, but put a tickler on my calendar for Jan 7th to rsvp. Glad I did.

I just noticed in Fred's comments that there are peacocks there. I don't remember whether I said this earlier, but be forewarned: if you have a car that is peacock blue or anywhere near that color, I strongly recommend that you NOT use that as transportation to the ranch. Peacocks will attack cars of that color. Not kidding. They almost ruined my sister's car at the place where she boards her horse. They pecked marks all along the side of the car and will get on top of cars, too.

    March 4, 2014

  • Ray E.

I signed up for this back when the time changed just after attending the Carew tower shoot. Why am I now having to sign up again and be waitlisted?
