Still Life Shoot

  • Mar 1, 2014 · 11:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We'll set up a bunch of tables to display what everyone brings, so everybody bring something to contribute to the tables.   We'll have four or five stations for shooting. We'll gather into groups. Each group will agree on a set of objects to display at their station and collaborate on a set up and lighting scheme, then all will take turns lighting and shooting this set up. When done, you can then revisit the display tables and work on creating another set up.

Post your ideas here so others can collaborate with you to add to a theme.

For lighting, we want everyone to volunteer some sort of lighting if you can. It can be as small as a desk lamp to full sized studio lighting.  Last time, table and desk lamps ruled.  So, if you have a nice brass lamp or something cool, that will work.  Please don't bring priceless or antique items, as there may be a danger of mishandling or damage.

Bring a backdrop if you have one. If you have backdrop supports, bring them as well.  Black and other dark colors seem to be the best, though, we do want diversity.

Everyone should post here what sort of backdrops, supports, and lighting they can bring, so that we make sure we have sufficient supply in that department.

As far as props goes, in the past, we had great success with food products (fruit, flowers, vegies, pasta, etc.), and wine with glasses. We did several interesting desktop type setups with books, spectacles, lamp, and assorted accoutrements.  There was one interesting idea with maps, books, globe, telescope, etc. which deserves another go.  Anything of interest like old bottles, utensils, unique bowls and other dishes.

There were also some interesting dayglow objects set up with dark background as well.

The sky is the limit.  Be creative.  Bring off the wall stuff and bring typical stuff.  Old stuff is cool and good.

Here's a link to some of the shots from last years still life shoot.

This was a great shoot and a lot of really cool images came from it. It's disappointing that of the 57 signed up, that only 25 showed up. Pretty bad, I'd say. So, thank you to all who did show up and thank you, especially, to all those who helped and worked the set ups. I had a great time.

    • Connie S.

True, in a way, but I thought the number who showed up was just about right for giving everyone a chance at the different setups without it being too crowded.

My thanks to those who organized this event and to Rick, Dan, Fred, and those others who graciously assisted the rest of us. I got some great ideas on how to set up a small set at home.

Sorry--I'm awful with names, but I think it was Jeff--who left a small black clamp with orange grippers at the tips to help hold down my table tent. Please get in touch with me about how to get that back to you.

I know there was a box of other odds and ends left, and I think Rick will be posting something about that soon.

This went really well, lots of new ideas from the first time we did this, so some really different images. Seems like it was a good sized group, not overly crowded, and it looked as though everyone pretty much got a chance to shoot everything they wanted. It was great fun, and I still am processing images. Have loaded some to Facebook while Meetup has been down, but I hope to post a few here soon!

I had a blast shooting with everyone. There is always something to shoot at these events. Best part was socializing with other Photographers.

AAAAA++++ And a thank you to all who planned and contributed to this most enjoyable and creative photo opportunity. What a range of subject matter from things painted with light to faces made with veggies. I came away with a innovative images and the encouragement to push my imagination even further. I was impressed with how patient, accommodating, and helpful all who participated in hosting this event were. Perhaps should be a yearly event, but be forewarned, the bar has been set very high to do it better.

If you are planning to bring more than one or two items, it would be a good idea to make a list of what you bring so that you don't forget anything at the end!

    2 · February 24, 2014

  • Stephen L.

I have to cancel, I had another commitment I forgot about, I was looking forward to this as it was great last year.

    February 17, 2014

  • Jane K.

I have a 10" female figure that holds jewelry in its hands, a small pair of binoculars, an olive oil bottle. Can also bring a few tubes of acrylic paints and a few brushes. I do not have any lighting. I have a white manikin for drawing but with a broken leg but that can be easily hidden. The hands and legs can be adjusted for any pose.

    February 17, 2014

  • Bob W.

Rick, If you need more set ups let me know. If you want I can set up one for light painting or strobe, Your choice.

    February 9, 2014

    • Rick

Bob, The light painting thing would be great. Look forward to seeing you there.

      February 16, 2014

  • Dan P.

I'll root around and find stuff, but am embarrassed to find, among the things I brought back last time we did this, are two small red glass stem vases that don't belong to me. Somebody can claim them, please.

    February 9, 2014

  • JohnMann

I have a black, white and green backdrops and some reflective and white umbrellas with constant light bulbs or two flash mounts. It is NOT expensive professional equipment but if you think it can be useful I'll bring them. For the constant lighting I will need an outlet.

    February 9, 2014

  • Mick B.

My wife is an artist and she would like a few shots of her art supplies, which I will bring. I don't have a backdrop or lighting, but I can bring a variety of colored posterboard.

    1 · January 28, 2014

I can bring some fishing equipment and a few 8mm cameras. I have a couple other pieces of older cameras, both video and film.

I'm really looking forward to this meetup. I can bring the following: absinthe with supplies, antique medicine bottles, old wooden cigar press, stone bird figurine, wine corks, large pine cones, old wooden fruit crate, and whatever else I can come up with.

    1 · January 27, 2014

I have a table top tent, a pop-up backdrop (2-sided, black/white), and an incandescent light on a stand that I can bring. Also a black sheet that can be used as a tablecloth. I have some items to shoot as well, but I'll have to figure that out later.

    January 24, 2014

    • Connie S.

Several others have volunteered to bring backdrops, and I think they will be better than my portable one. I still will bring the table top tent and light.

      January 27, 2014

  • Sophia Z.

I also have 6 Paul Buff strobes: 2 Ultra 1200, 2 Ultra 1600, and 2 White Lightning 800s. I have absolutely no idea of how to set them up, but if anyone else knows how, I'll bring them.

    January 26, 2014

  • Jen Mize M.

I have a very large black fabric backdrop and stands I could bring if you need for a station setup.

    January 26, 2014

  • Sophia Z.

I have a backdrop stand that can extend 8 feet x 12 feet and several backdrops, but none of them are black. I'll post an item list after Pro Photo Expo (Feb 6-10)

    January 25, 2014

  • Donna M.

I will post my complete list of items later. I saw Tracey's lighthouse items and have a few things that may be useful. I have a 24" ceramic lighthouse and a 17" wooden seaman in a yellow slicker and hat.

    January 25, 2014

    • Kathy

I have a couple of small lighthouse figurines.

      January 25, 2014

  • Fred H.

Rick, I have a bag of small items I can bring and some colored backdrops. Also, I want to try my hand at a vegetable face photo and so will bring some fresh vegetables to set up one station for that.

    January 25, 2014

  • Tracey A.

This sounds like a fun learning experience. I have some different lamps, a clip on desk lamp, a hand made wooden floor lamp, a cracked vase, a glass rose, several lighthouses different sizes (some light up), and I am sure I can think of some other things.

    January 25, 2014

  • Kathy

I have an irregular shaped clear green glass bowl, like for a table setting and a white ceramic milk jug with some light coloration on it. I also have a 4 inch tripod flashlight with different light settings and you can angle the head.

    January 25, 2014

  • Lynn M.

I have some old pharmaceutical items (scale, empty bottles, bottles with unidentified products in them, old medical books, etc.) that I will bring.
