Our 3rd Annual Springtime Island Writers Retreat...

2014's spring retreat is at the "President's Cottage" on Middle Bass Island, Friday, May 16th to Sunday, May 18th.  You're invited to get away with us, to spend quality time with your writing and like-minded writers.

Note: If there are profits from this retreat, they will go to the repair and restoration of the President's Cottage.

The $225 reservation fee covers everything, including round-trip passenger tickets for the ferry boat, transport to/from the island ferry dock, overnight accommodations in your private cottage room for two nights, all meals and beverages for three days, planned group writing activities and your own uninterrupted "quiet time" during this unique and relaxing weekend retreat.

French explorers long ago named Middle Bass Island the "Isle de Fleurs" because of its wildflowers. If April showers bring May flowers, then we should be in for a blossoming treat. Historic Lonz Winery, although closed for the time being, remains a popular "Kodak moment" along with its glacial grooves, the bald eagle's nest, views of Perry's Monument, and Lake Erie sunsets.

Middle Bass is often confused with its busier sister, South Bass Island, where Put-in-Bay attracts tourists, including boating and weekend party crowds. By contrast, Middle Bass Island is ideal for a writers retreat at the "President's Cottage" where President Taft slept.  Bring your binoculars, journals, camera, and comfortable walking shoes and explore "The Grove" where he and the First Lady enjoyed the natural shade and sunset views.

Reservations are limited so, if this retreat fills up, there will be a first-come, first-served waiting list in place.  Sorry, smoking and pets are not permitted on the premises.

As always, Steve put on an excellent weekend retreat! The group of attendees gelled perfectly. The exchanges between the writers were rich and meaningful. The food was good, and what started as a rather cold weekend ended with sitting in the sun in shorts and t-shirts. Everyone left energized and eager to make progress on writing projects. I loved having a little more time to get some work done on my current manuscript!

I'm delayed writing, but no worries - Steve did have a ticket for me!! (Hahaha!) Steve was a warm host, despite a very cold weekend! He cooked our meals , got us writing and sharing with his creative assignments and provided us ample time to write, as we gathered on the sunny wrap-around porch with our laptops and notepads. Conversations were just as filling as Steve's home cooking! I have confidence to take on my memoir project, thanks to the combined wisdom of this amazing group. I'll send my notes to Steve so he can either post or send on individually. I miss you all, already! Thanks, Steve for your generosity and warm hospitality.

Steve is a fantastic host, in every regard. He went over and beyond to make our stay pleasant (e.g., providing comparable meals for vegetarians) and meaningful (e.g., offering specific advice in one-on-one conversation). I felt so welcome and at ease (just a little cold) during the entire weekend. Thanks, Steve.

It was excellent. The writers--five females and one male--that came all contributed, Steve, our host gave us everything we needed to enjoy the weekend and grow as writers. Lots of good food, lots of private time (if wanted) three fun writing challenges and a little tour of this unique part of Middle Bass island.
The weekend included two 45 minute ferry boat rides, some rain (at night mostly), some cold weather (even though it was mid May) and one full day of sunny and warm weather.
I felt as I got in my little car and drove back home that it was the best writers retreat I had ever attended.
P.S. Only two rooms in Steve's big old house are heated so attendees need to bring some woolies just in case it turns cold.

Sorry to have a change of heart but I know you'll have a great time! Take lots of pictures and maybe post a writing of your Middle Bass experience.

Thanks Steve for putting this together, really looking forward to it! Do we bring our bikes if would like to ride and when you mention swim are you referring in lake?

Hi Anita, there are bicycles you can use at the cottage, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. I believe the ferry charges $3 to bring a bicycle onto the boat. Either way, remember to pick up your paid-for passenger ticket at the Miller Ferry ticket house. Looking forward to greeting you on the island side!

And yes, Anita, that's swim as in the lake. It's not quite a Polar Bear dive, but it's exhilarating if you're brave enough to take the plunge this time of year!

HI Steve, I removed my name so someone else can fill the spot. If it is still open and I get the funding, I would love to attend. Thank you for your patience. I am so sorry. The car situation really messed us up financially.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
