Beginner Backpacking Trip to Nebo Ridge in the HNF

Short overnight beginner backpacking trip to Nebo Ridge in the Hoosier National Forest near Story Indiana (Brown county).

This trip is designed for those who have none to little experience backpacking.  It is also open to those with experience that are willing to help the beginners.

More details to follow as the time gets closer.

If you have any questions post in the comments or message me directly.

Directions to the North Parking Area
Go 9 miles south on IN 135 from the IN 46/IN 135 junction to the community of Story. Veer off SR 135 at the Story Inn (this is Elkinsville Road, but it is unmarked). Travel 2.7 miles and pass a gravel road on your right. Take the left bend in the road and cross a bridge. Go 0.3 miles then turn left into the parking area.

Below is a map to the campsite:

http://files.meetup.com/1782741/Nebo%20Simple.pdf

For those interested the coordinates are:

Camp
N39° 03' 35.80"
W86° 14' 47.50"

TrailHead
N39° 04' 42.88"
W86° 14' 51.98"

Directions to the campsite for those who arrive late and do not go in with the group:

From the trailhead head south on the trail until you get to a sign in the trail. Go to the right toward combs road. This short trail will go downhill then before it starts back up it intersects Combs road. Turn left and go about a quarter mile. We will camp to the left of the road. The road has been closed for many years, so it is only a trail now.

Here is a link to the official trail information. It does not show the campsite. We will only be hiking a small portion of the trail.

We had such a great trip. Maya has been asleep amost of the day and Matt and I have been online finding and pricing hammocks and packs and lighter equipment and... well, you all know the drill. Can't wait to get out again.

I am glad to see that so many had a good time on this trip. Let me know if you have any other ideas for trips. I had a great time as well. Oscar and Butters are tuckered out. Tonya survived, she likes hiking, backpacking not so much.

Great trip. Was a pleasure to see so many people turn out. Look forward to seeing everyone on another trip soon.

I am trying to figure out how much water to bring. It looks from this discussion like we can bring water to leave the cars and just walk a couple miles back to the parking lot to get it if necessary. Otherwise there is not going to be water in the creeks or anything like that. Is that right?

    September 6, 2013

    • Ron W.

I am going to bring 4 quarts for myself an I believe that will be enough. I also plan to leave some in my car if I need more.

      September 6, 2013

    • Chris F.

I would recommend at least 3 liters.

Well, I should warn you all, two of my friends who are signed up to go have NEW WARBONNET RIDGE RUNNER HAMMOCK never before used. They will be UNBEARABLY PROUD and snobbish. Please help me to bring them down a notch or two if you can, but beware..... a man (or woman) with a new hammock like the NEW WARBONNET RIDGE RUNNER HAMMOCK can be quite a handful and may even grow boisterous and even smile without provocation around the fire. LOL

I appreciate the offer, but we're planning on bringing our dog. She's had occassion to get car sick now and then. To be on the safe side i'd rather have her in my car. And between the 3 of us and gear on our first overnight, i'm not sure we'll be able to hit the road on time to meet you that early.

      September 4, 2013

    • Ryan Y.

There is no water there. All creeks are dry, unless story IN. Gets 3" of rain in the next 3 days. I am going to carry in a few liters and walk back to the parking lot if I need more.

The parking lot isn't that far from the campsite.

    I didn't see a pond,maybe Ron knows of one. ?

This is the impression I got after speaking with Ron today, If I am correct, we are just walking the trail all the way to Combs Road then turn left and go to the bottom of the hill.

      September 3, 2013

  • Kyle M.

Ron, is the plan to meet at the trail head at 1?

    • Ron W.

      Yes, that is the plan.

      September 3, 2013

The hike to the campsite is only a couple of miles. There can be an optional side trip to the top of Browning hill and Indiana's Stonehenge after camp is set up. Dogs are allowed (I will be bringing mine).

My wife and I scouted out a campsite Sunday. We found a nice site, unfortunately the creeks are dry currently. Since this is just an overnight trip that should not be too much of a problem. I would recommend bringing 3-4 quarts of water. I will also cache some water near the campsite.

The trip is coming up in a few weeks, please update you RSVP if you will be unable to attend. This allows me to have a more accurate expectation of how many will attend.

    August 18, 2013

  • Andy S.

A beginner always brings a lot of things they don't need and carries too much weight. The first time I went out on a an overnight on the Knobstone Trail, I think my pack weighed 60 pounds. I remember carrying two small kettles clipped to the outside of my pack, because I didn't want to fix my oatmeal and coffee in the same kettle. I didn't even take the handles off.

You need water, food and shelter in that order. I am a tarp guy so I can get by when bugs are not an issue with a plastic drop cloth for a tarp, a groundsheet, usually a piece of Tyvek or something similar, a sleeping pad, a sleeping bag or quilt for shelter. Coordinate with the organizer and others about water and it is a short trip so just bring whatever you want for food.

DO NOT wear cotton clothes. Blue jeans and cotton tee shirts suck for backpacking.
