A meeting about meetings

Update: I've set this one for Saturday afternoon, but I'm also setting up another Meeting about Meetings for Monday evening.

For this meetup on Saturday, after we are done talking about meetings, you are all welcome to stay and socialize. My wife loves playing card and board games, and I like socializing.

So... we need to talk about meetings. I am on Meetup every day. Many of you have not been back to the Olympia Atheists meetup in a very long time, so I'm contacting you this way.

Hi, I'm Steve Greenfield aka Polymorph, a new Organizer here. Thank you, Eric, for making me an Organizer. Prior to this, I've been inviting all of you to the potluck game days that my wife and I hold every month.

But we need some actual Olympia Atheists meetups! I know there are some possible issues with public meeting spacings. So let's put our brains together and compare notes. I'm willing to host a meeting to talk about meetings at my house. I have no idea how many people will show, but I have parking for about 8 cars and 3 more across the street, and should be able to fit a max of about 20 people in the back room.

I'm in Lacey, about a mile-and-a-half south of Huntamer Park. I must point out that we are not wheelchair accessible. No ramp, and the design of the bathroom is terrible for that. I wish we were, but can't afford it at this time.

Or there may be a park we can meet at. It is staying light until about 9pm or so. Several people at last Sunday's meetup brought up having a meetup at a bowling alley, not to bowl, but because many of them have lots of tables and seating, and a restaurant or bowling alley will be wheelchair accessible.

I think we should do this soon, but with at a minimum of 1 weeks notice. A weeknight from 7 to 9pm? A weekend during the day? We can't expect every meeting to be available for every person, because we can have more meetings and different days, times, and places.

So the earliest practical date would be Wednesday June 11, or Saturday June 14 as I have prior commitments on the 12th and 13th. For future meetups, they don't all have to be on days handy for me, but for the purpose of this meetup, I need to be there.

Please respond with your ideas and preferences.

Thank you,
Steve "Polymorph" Greenfield

Great talking with folks, we definitely need to encourage more organizers.

Shared some good information. Some of the key points: Regular monthly social gathering, maybe 3rd Sunday of each month. More organizers, wide variety of events - the really active Meetup groups have lots of organizers, and a large variety of events. The success of a particular event is not determined by large numbers. The same people won't be at all events, nor should we expect them to be.

Some ideas were put forth as to events:
Outdoor events - hiking, backpacking, car camping, Lazer Tag
    Mini Golf
    Bowling Alley with a restaurant
Monthly social meeting at my house, until and unless we find somewhere better

Come 'round to the back patio, we're meeting there. Left past the garage. We'll have a sign on the front door directing people around the back, too.

This is my last weekend with my kiddo for most of the summer so I'm taking a raincheck.

At this point it makes no sense for me to participate in this kind of "meeting about meetings." But I liked the suggestion of looking at the San Diego atheists' site - as well as mnatheists.org (Twin Cities), portland humanists.org (OR) the smaller redriverfreethinkers.org in Fargo, or related sites around the country. If you can agree on what you're looking to get out of these activities - e.g (a) simply communing with like-minded people; (b) learning more about free thought, religion, church-and-state battles, etc.; (c) channeling your do-gooder impulses and/or showing the world that we're not amoral monsters; (d) trying to get people to give up religion (which I don't recommend!) - then I sure you'll come up with some (a) additional social activities; (b) live presentations, videos, and/or discussion groups (c) community service/activism; and/or other things that work for the group. I look forward to joining you for some of these activities in the not-too-distance future.

The 14th is my last day with my daughter for the summer. I love the new energy here and will support everything I can. This instance, obviously, takes a back seat. Thanks Poly!!!

Steve, our atheist meetup in San Diego was large and very active. There might be some ideas for meetups if you check them out: San Diego New Atheists and Agnostics. Just a suggestion!

I should have also said to look at the past meet ups more than the future ones!

Joanne is also coming to this, she's having problems joining the Meetup so she asked me to post this for her.

The 14th will not work for me, but I do understand the need to meet and that there will be other meetings. I like the idea of meeting in peoples homes or parks, as opposed to meeting at businesses.

Since I'm not even living in Olympia yet, I'm going to pass on this get-together, but I look forward to hearing about your plans for the future.

Nothing happens if no one plans anything.

My wife and I host a monthly games and potluck day on the 1st saturday of most months at our house in Lacey. If you look in the "Suggested" tab on the home page, you'll find the meetup. It won't be announced to the group until at least two more people sign up.
