Anna Karenina Mini Movie Festival and Potluck

  • February 2, 2013 · 3:00 PM
  • Private Home

Mark tried to have a house party and see this movie but the Century Theater never scheduled a showing.  He has decided to help me with an event at my home.  Since I am a theater buff I thought it would be interesting to see the original 1935 Greta Garbo version and then compare it to the 2012 remake.

The Plan:

Have a potluck meal at my house starting at 3:00 pm.  Bring food item to share and BYOB.  Mark originally tried to have period specific menu items from the films but I'm too busy to organize that.  Probably watch the 1935 version (Comcast On -Demand) around 3:45.  Clean up and travel to Capitol Theater at 6:00 pm.

Tickets for Capitol Theater are $5.50 for OFS members and $8.50 general admission.  I have a few $5 passes for those with limited resources. Send me an email at [masked] to request a pass.

To all that attended potluck, thank you for making the day a success. I finally watched Comcast's version and realized they made a mistake, it wasn't Greta Garbo. Yes Darlene I fell asleep at that one too. Mark thanks for the original idea and bringing aprodisiac, Marilyn thanks for peach crunch it must have been great cause I didn't get any, Barbara for being such an enthusiast and encouragement, Michalene for sharing the party room with me and "Borst', Anna for being a smiling face I recognised, Christopher for all the kind praise, Charles for entertaining the ladies in the kitchen when I couldn't, Polly for wearing Russian attire, Ray Jean ? for making me feel like rock star by crashing party, Tifffany for finally coming to a movie event and meeting new people, Ushole for making it to the theater, Darlene for the sandwich and time, Nikki for reminding me we went out years ago, Richelle for parking and Magdalana I'm not sure which one you were but for you and all the rest Thanks!

Yes, lots of fun Saturday. One correction -- Raye Jean was my guest, not a crasher. I had RSVP'd for myself and 1 guest, and she was it. Polly was the guest Marilyn had RSVP'd for. But you know, I'm not saying you're NOT a rock star, Steve!

I almost don't know where to start on this one. This was one of the best Meetups - a great concept. Such a fun group and in two fun settings. Steve, this was a fantastic idea. Much like trying two different chocolates, we were able to watch two versions of the same film and compare. Both were good, but I especially enjoyed the latest remake. I even stayed at the Capitol Theater for "Sessions", I highly recommend it. Steve your house is very nice (great view!), your kitchen project rocks and you are a great host. The potluck food was very tasty, Michalene (recipe please : ), who knew we would have REAL Borscht made with such care to go with our Russian films? Great idea! Thanks everyone for a fun evening!

I agree with Christopher, this was a great meet-up. The two movie versions were both good, and SO different. You are a terrific host, Steve, and your house is ideal for a potluck!

I wrote this in another area, but I don't think it worked. If it did, well, you get info twice.
I will be bringing a gluten free peach crunch.

I'm looking forward to trying your interpretation of Borcht Michalene. I'll be bringing not-your-grandmother's pasta with sage, caramelized cabbage, breadcrumbs, garlic, parmesan and secret ingredient for the brave.

I am making Broscht - chunky and hot - not the blended, cold, yucky stuff.

Greta Garbo was fabulous in the 1935 version...but what a sad story. Thank you for coordinating the event. I would love to join you but may not be back from a previous commitment in time to meet anyone :(

Greetings! This will be my first Meet-up event. I am looking forward to it. I havn't seen the 1935 version of this film, since I was a little girl. I am thrilled we will be viewing both! See you Saturday :)
