Spinning steel wool - night photograpy

Have you ever heard of "spinning steel wool?" If not, it is a lot of fun and a very photogenic activity. Basically you light steel wool on fire and photograph the sparks. You can see examples in my night image gallery.

http://www.scottwoodphotogallery.com/Art/Night/25174373_Nt6bBV#!i=[masked]&k=2QsQhW2

I have 2 complete setups, basically a metal cooking whisk with a cable attached to the handle, and I think this would be a lot of fun for the group.  This is long exposure photography so a tripod, or some other way to stabilize your camera, is required.

We have a date and I am scouting a location or two and will update that as soon as I can.

I am open to locations, but I think that the fountain in downtown would be pretty awesome, I wonder if the city would have a problem with that? Obviously the other requirement is that it will need to be night/dark. :-)

Other than being in nuclear level pain because of my back, I had a good time. This was really cool and I'm going to try it again.

      Hope your feeling better.

This was so much fun. Doug, Daniel and I stayed around till almost 11. Doug kept saying, just one more...lol. What an awesome time.

This was more fun than I thought it would be and the weather cooperated perfectly.

Thanks to everyone for making this happen. It was great fun. I was amazed that I actually pretty much had a clue what I was doing, but so appreciated the advice (I think Randy checked my settings). I even managed to take some great photos!

Can someone confirm the location? My maps say its close to college street. But when I click in the post it says its off Capitol in downtown oly. Thanks!

I have a big golf umbrella that I always carry that I will bring, but if anyone else has any "props" that they think will be interesting, bring them.

Daniel checked in with the Fire Dept. They said that we should be OK, but that if anyone calls it in, they will have to respond. They said that they didn't see any reason to contact the police. Looks like the weather is cooperating and we should have an almost full moon.

Wearing black might be a good idea, too.

    March 29, 2013

Another possible benefit of this location and the timing is that you may catch a nice sunset over the black hills, with the capital in the foreground.

Going to try and make it. Inspired after seeing your photos at the meetup.

    March 22, 2013

  • Scott

I'd love to be part of the flammable mayhem. I have an early evening thing, but should be able to get there almost on time. Another location possibility: There are big concrete pads by the eastside water tower on Fir St -- and, I think, minimal streetlight pollution. http://goo.gl/maps/Fi0qt

I stopped by there today and I think that place will be perfect. A huge amount of concrete and plenty of room to shoot and park. I will update the Meetup details.

Lots of great ideas, if each of you that had an idea about a location could take action and follow up on your idea we should be able to secure a location quickly.

How about one of the colleges? It would be easy to talk to administration and get permission...they all have fields or courtyards and since its a form of art I bet Evergreen wouldn't mind letting us use there space...they used to host a zombie game for teens, I doubt a photo shoot would cause an issue

A location occurred to me last night: the Kmart parking lot. Big and empty. We could set up in the middle of the lot to avoid the appearance of vandalism to the building. If any police show up (very possible) we could explain easily what we were doing.

It does seem like a good idea, but given that it is private property I would like to get permission first. Plan on scouting site on Friday, I have a day off of work.

      March 20, 2013

    • Gary W.

Getting persmisson for there might take a while. But worth checking the place out. Maybe there are NO Tresspassing signs, if not...WELL...maybe.

      March 20, 2013

  • Gary W.

I would be pretty sure that we could do it at the parking area down here in Rochester at the Rochester Grade School. I have seen motocycles, go karts and such all over there. But a little drive for everyone, for me about a mile....We for sure want a concrete area.

The fountain would be a cool place! When we get a time and day I would love to attend!

    March 19, 2013

    • Big G.

I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but I would agree with Gary. We went to an event there last year (Tango by the Fountain) and the organizer said the City required permits and had a lot of rules about what could and couldn't be done there. We should find some private property where we have permission or get permission if it is a public place.

I agree about the fountain, it is just too high profile for a group. I might try to get down there on a rainy night when I have it by myself and try a shot or two. I do like the idea of the concrete slabs off of Fir, but haven't scouted it yet. I also love the idea of private property.

Gary - I realize that it is the Saturday before Easter, and while that might not work for everyone, other dates will also pose a problem for folks. I would like to do this again if people enjoy it.

    March 19, 2013

    • Gary W.

I hear you. A date and time can not be good for everyone....this date works for me just fine...

      March 19, 2013

  • Gary W.

What about a parking lot. Maybe Capitol High School. We could force John G, to seek permission. Course as they say, "it's better to beg forgiveness than seek permission"...lol

    March 19, 2013

  • Gary W.

I am just throwing this out there. It is Easter weekend and some might be preparing for Sunday. Maybe we could think about moving it out a week....lets here some thoughts...

Thanks Scott for the location suggestion. I have never been there but will do a little scouting. Street view looks like there is access to it. I will try to get over there tomorrow after work.

Bummer, Cant do that night. It is Easter eve and have plans with family. Look forward to the results. Maybe you could post a quick how to, or point to a good source of info on how to..

    All,

I have updated the date/time for Saturday evening at 7:30pm. This should give us enough time before the sun goes down to get things ready and and go over some general settings for night shooting.

Still looking for suggestions on a location.

True. One thing to remember, the only person actually close to the sparks is the person actually spinning the steel wool, everyone else is a decent distance away to get the shot.

    March 18, 2013

Sounds fun! We might want to ask people to sign a waiver.
