SUPER MASSIVE PATHFINDER DUNGEON CRAWL

Well folks it's time to go "down the well!"  For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to Rappan Athuk, the Granddaddy of Dungeons!  The Pathfinder edition has just been released!  I've been attempting to run this dungeon for various groups over the years and something always gets in the way... well not this time!  I'm bound and determined to run this dungeon.

This is going to be a dungeon crawl in the spirit of the Diablo computer games.  So if you aren't looking for an action packed monster slaying treasure taking kind of game, lite on rules, heavy on FUN, then this isn't for you.  I will have some role-playing type encounters scattered here and there, but I'm just gonna be honest, this isn't a deep story of mystery and intrigue sort of game.  This is a let's go conquer this legendary evil place and reap the GLORY AND RICHES sort of game.  Can we come up with a back story and such for why your character is involved, sure.  Are there situations to use your brain and not just your dice rolling hand, absolutely.  Is there a superevil boss at the end that no one has ever beaten before, DEFINITELY...

Will you be the first???

***This initial meetup is to make characters and work out details concerning scheduling and such.***

Kacy, sure, come on down... I had one already drop out (not form the meet up site). I'll be wearing a red D&D t-shirt, possibly black baseball cap with a green american flag on it, and dorky army glasses...

It looks like my Scion game is being rescheduled and so my time may be open for this game. I know that you gathered a ton of interest for your game, and are probably full. However, should I show up at the interest meeting at least?

Jenna, no trade necessary ;) I'm bringing enough character sheets for everyone. Alex, I will have some extra dice on hand as well... The comic shop does have wifi as well. I don't have extra pencils, although I might have enough money to pick up some when I go grocery shopping tomorrow. There are plenty of dice apps and such for ipad and android...

Hi, I rsvp'd. I currently don't have any dice or char sheets, and I spent the last of my cash on paint, for a project I'm working on. I can bring my iPad though. If there is wifi, I'm sure I can find some dice apps, or websites that emulate dice rolling. Or, I could be super nerdy, and write a few random number generators on my laptop.

Quick Question: Can anyone bring an empty character sheet with them, for me to use? I ran out of printer ink so I can't bring my own. =( I'll have mini chocolate Reese's Cups to trade for it!

Hey Alex! Sure man, show up. As joe mentioned we are just meeting each other and discussing scheduling and making characters. If you don't mind could you go ahead and RSVP for the last slot for the meetup. Are you familiar with Pathfinder at all? If not, no problem, just wondering. See you Sunday!

i'm new also but sure that even if we go longer than 2 it would be perfectly ok if you had to leave early it's char creation and figuring schedule for gaming. if nothing else doesn't hurt to show up and meet some people and have a good few hours with other gamers.

Devin, my schedule is SUPER tight right now too... when I planned all this I had no idea that I was going to have my schedule jam packed at work. And I'm doing all this transitioning out of the Army stuff and looking for a new job, so I understand... being an adult sucks sometimes ;p LOL

Jenna I'll make sure to show up early too so I can "set up" and stuff. I'll be wearing my "red box" D&D t-shirt and will be wearing my dorky army glasses... are we going for the table in the corner near the soda machines and such?

    September 12, 2012

  • Jenna M.

I'll probably show up when they open to guarantee us 'the table'. Also, hair isn't green anymore, so if you are looking for me, I should be wearing my brown dreads by then.

Excellent! This should be a good game. My schedule is kind of tight so I hope I'll be able to be a regular player O_o We can figure it all out this Sunday though. See you then!

Everything else is fine... just no evil. Honestly, I'm not real big on alignment. I'm not one of those GMs who enforces it strictly unless you are playing a character that specifically has a moral code they are supposed to follow.

    September 11, 2012

  • A former member
    A former member

hmmmm no EVIL i wonder how far up the moral panel does that mean we have to go? is chaotic neutral ok or is it out as well i've got a friend that when he runs you have to have good in the alignment can't go that far lol.

    September 11, 2012

As a side note, Joe, the Malefactor class should be fine, however, I don't want EVIL characters. This is a game where ya'll are the HEROES and you are fighting the "forces of evil". That doesn't mean ya'll have to be perfectly moral beacons of goodness, but not evil. I've found that unless the entire party is evil that evil characters tend to cause unnecessary game disruption. It really all goes back to a Dragonlance game I was playing long ago when my Kender's goat was killed by another player playing a Black Robed (evil) wizard... ;)

But for now I've told everyone to show up at the comic shop @ 11 AM on the 16th. We will meet and see what happens. If all of us can agree on a regular schedule then I guess we will attempt to play the game with 8 players. If that is the case we will definitely have to play at the comic shop or somewhere else that has more room than my apartment. And for the record, I can't play anywhere that has CATS... I will suffocate and die (not literally, but almost). Also, if we have this many players we might need to start at a lower level than I originally planned. But we will discuss all that on Sunday. So everyone have a good week and I will see ya'll Sunday! Bring your dice, pencils, paper and a smile! Computers might be helpful too. I'm bringing mine. Please post, or email me any questions, comments or concerns ASAP. Thanks!

Here's what I plan to do. When we all get together I want to come up with a regular gaming schedule. I know we all have jobs and lives outside of gaming, so it is often difficult to meet everyone's scheduling needs and preferences. I will go with the majority though. I want what is best for the group and I can't please everyone. I wish I was a GMing GOD so I could honestly say that I could make a game with 8 players run smoothly. It is POSSIBLE, but from my experience over the last 20 years too many players bogs down the game. Also, once we discuss the game some people may decide this game isn't for them. That's fine, I won't take it personally. Scheduling is subject to change also. I get out of the Army in 5 weeks and I will have to find a new job, so we may come up with a schedule for now, but I want everyone to be aware ahead of time that I may have to change things up depending on what kind of job I get.

Alright guys and gal, it's almost that time and man, Devin, we went from just me and you to a full group! We've got the 5 of us on here now and I posted fliers at the comic shop and I've gotten 2 responses from that AND I have a friend at work that wants to join! So that brings us to a grand total of NINE people (including me)!!! Holy crap! I haven't turned anyone away YET. 8 players is A LOT to manage. But I figure that once we sit down and start discussing scheduling that it's likely that we will have some people that don't agree on the same schedule. SO that may eliminate some folks. I'm also not sure about my buddy at work. He may flake out. Continued on next post...

Hey Joe! "where you goin with that gun in your hand..." Seriously though, Thanks for joining! Don't worry about not having books. If you are using the PRD I'm assuming you have a computer. If you DO have a computer then I can hook you up with JUST ABOUT any book you may want in digital format. Also there is the UNOFFICIAL d20pfsrd site that includes all the PRD stuff and some "third party" stuff. See you Sunday!

Regardless of house rules and such, a good mix of classes will be needed. If we are low on players we made even need to use Gestalt rules. If you don't know what that is I will explain it in the packet. Combat, Magic, and Healing are essential. Rouge skill next. Everything else is secondary. The characters will start at 3rd or 4th level. We may use the FAST XP progression, but I haven't decided on that yet...

    September 1, 2012

I'll start working on that rules packet today. Since I have 24 hour duty tomorrow I should have plenty of time to work on it then ;) If ya'll don't mind email me so I have your email addresses and I can email you all the packet as soon as I have something. Otherwise I will have a packet for each of you when we meet on the 16th. Also, since I allow lost of character customization I recommend we write up characters by hand. I know lots of people use stuff like Hero Lab and such to make characters, but sometimes those resources are lacking in customization. I can provide character sheets as well.

    September 1, 2012

  • A former member
    A former member

Ok, so I can't write a whole lot on here due to the character limit. I will start preparing a packet concerning rules and house rules and such. Just keep in mind that this is a game to cut loose and have fun with. The world is going to be generic with very little detail since everything is going to focus on the dungeon and nearby environs. We aren't going to sweat why the characters are together. They joined up to go in search of the Legendary Dungeon of Rappan Athuk. I'm not really concerned with the little story details making sense. IT IS FOR FUN. IT'S FANTASY.

Yes I have house rules. None of which are required, but highly recommended. That's why I prefer meeting up the first time JUST to make characters. I don't really have any SET house rules. I let people customize characters depending on the character. I like for the adventurers to be HEROES not farm boys with their dad's old rusty sword and armor. So in my games you get more feats, I have my own "heroic" method for rolling stats, and individual characters might have certain other perks that we just come up with together. I like for PCs to NOT be evil. Not saying they have to be holy do-gooders, just NOT evil. And GOOD kinda "cliche" heroes will fit best for this game. I find that evil characters are typically disruptive to the game. I won't go into specifics on here, but I will allow ANY Pathfinder compatible rules.

    September 1, 2012

  • Devin

So I am thinking for my first character I am going to make a fighter. Low int, but high str and dex. The classic meat shield. Wade, do you have any special rules for creating a character, or is it just standard?

Occ opens at 10 or 1030 cant remember for sure but 11 would be best to ensure a table. And yes devin threatened me into showing up. So more than likely I'll be there.

So do we want to schedule this for like 11:00 or 11:30? It doesn't matter to me... I'm flexible.

    September 1, 2012

  • Jenna M.

Oh yeah, meeting at the OCC will be fine for the first time. However, a word of caution: Sunday has a large massive meeting around noon of gamers, and the place can get really crowded, really fast. I would suggest bumping the start time at least an hour and 1/2 earlier, or doing it later in the afternoon. We might not grab a table otherwise. And thanks for the bump of confidence with my lack of know-how! Sounds like fun!

Ok, I'll make the change and see how it goes. Thanks for contacting Jenna! I posted a flier at OCC and I made a discussion board post on two other meetup sites for gamers. My one player from my old group doesn't think he'll be playing, so we need at least 2 more folks.

Jenna, Devin made the suggestion of possibly meeting at the Comic shop first because people may be shy about going to a private residence before meeting. What is your input on this? Once we start playing I'd still rather meet at a private residence with less distractions...

Awesome! Don't worry about being a "noob". This kind of game is perfect for learning the rules. Each player will probably need to make multiple characters, so you will get practice on that. Since it is a dungeon you will get plenty of practice with dealing with traps, and puzzles and combat. And while this game is not heavy on story and role-playing, there will be some opportunities for that so you will get practice on using those skills and such as well. Either way, this is definitely a good game for learning the rules. And since this first meetup is just to make characters and to get to know each other we can help you through the character creation process and answer any questions you may have. Thanks for joining in! I was getting kinda bummed that no one was wanting to play...

    August 31, 2012

  • Jenna M.

Devin sent me! =P I'm interested, and luckily the 16th I am free so, yippee! However I have no clue about Pathfinder so I'm an extreme noob. I am eager to learn, though!
