Home made Cider Tasting and Cider Making + Seahawks

  • Oct 28, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • Peter's Home

Eight of us met a couple weeks ago and made cider from apples and began fermentation. This is the follow up tasting to that meetup.  This is Halloween week and some who attended the original meetup are busy and will not be able to attend.  This is the only date that will work for me.

This is also Monday Night Football with the Seahawks so I will have a projection screen set up so we can keep an eye on the game as well.

I hope some others will attend that didn't come to the original meetup.  If some new folks sign up and are interested I will give a short lesson in cider making and fermentation. In this lesson I will juice a few apples, show how to strain the juice, and describe the pasteurization options.  I will take some already prepared juice, measure the potential alcohol, add sugar and add the yeast and air lock.  I expect to spend only about 30 minutes or so on this.

Most of the evening will be taste testing the various ciders we made a couple weeks ago (and also a few others I have made), eat a little food and visit and watch the game. If the weather is dry we can sit around a fire in the backyard.

This is a week night so we will wrap up early, around nine I hope.

I am going to leave my pepper spray in the car next time. Great food and chat. You guys reinvented the idea of neighbors.... thanks for having me...

Mucho fun, Peter - thank you! Great group; had a very good time. And, what an education...

However, Peter - I think that I have a few gaps in my notes. Think that I, and probably a few other people, wouldn't mind coming back for another seminar... Thanks!

Thank you hosting this wonderful event. Loved the Hope Island and Schinke Road cider. Terrific cider making lesson and dual games on tv. Everyone was a winner. Next step, making my own batch of cider or wine. :)

Favorite ciders were Hope Island, Amelia's Honey sweetened Fuji, Cate's ginger blend. There wasn't a bad one in the lot though. I had so much fun I forgot to take pictures. And the Seahawks won in a squeaker. Thanks everyone for bringing all the great food and for coming clear out to my place.

Thanks Peter for hosting & all the care you took for our ciders. It was fun. I had thought it would all get drank but there was plenty left. Tasted better too.

Football food is great. Thanks everyone who wants to bring some. Please plan to take your leftovers home with you! For those with cider fermenting. Fermentation should be complete or close enough. Today is a good day to slowly poor off the clearer cider and separate the sediment by leaving it behind in the bottle. Wash it out of the bottom and pour your cider back in. Refrigerate from now on.

Test your cider for taste. It may be very dry, it may be bland depending on the apples and other factors. You can experiment with adding sugar and spices or wait until the party. I will have sugar and ginger and cinnamon to try on a glass by glass basis. See you all Monday Night

Wasn't sure if I would be able to attend, or not. Is there room for me to just sneak by, taste my batch, and then run?

Prior attendance at the prior cider making meetup is NOT a requirement. Just bring some other cider or some food to share.

It will be a couple weeks since we started the fermentation of the pressed cider. It would be fun to gather and test some of the different ciders we made. I have six varieties at my home now. I would wait a little longer but I am leaving town for a while. Sunday or Monday are the only days that work for me.

I have since installed a fire ring so if the weather is good we can sit around a campfire as well. Or perhaps someone else wants to volunteer their home closer to town. So looking to see how much interest there is to a follow up cider tasting party before I leave for warm and dry climates.
