Nightingales Sing: South Sound Women Jazz Vocalists @ the Royal

"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song."
Maya Angelou

The Royal presents a night filled with some of our fabulous, local songbirds. Whether you are looking for an answer or looking for a song, you are going to enjoy this evening of live music.

We at Oly Jazz Central often marvel over how many fine musicians this little town holds and that includes a fabulous variety of female jazz vocalists. On February 25th Jessica Blinn, Danielle Westbrook, Lizzy Boyer, Susan Tuzzolino, and Betsy Perkins will take to the stage with Lorree Gardener on Bass, Maria Joyner, drums, Brian Kinsella, piano, Ninee Wolff, sax and flute, and Ariel Calabria, guitar.

listen: you can still hear them humming and strumming,
chords on strings and electric things played with fingers
improvising and alive with jive and so much love of music,
quick of heart and spark of structure on the pages
of transposed keys and jeez, where did all this talent
come from. like out of the blue we meet together
at this time and place in the infinity of space.
    we are so close,
    and timing is everything.

    i am all joy!
every cell of my being grateful
for the musicians on the scene
in this small town -close to the coast-
so cool that we share this collective reality
    called jazz.
from my heart i give thanks
to the women - Danielle and Betsy -
who gave birth to this happening
and then inviting me: what fun!

    and i can't imagine
    what i'd do without Luceno
creating charts so my heart can sing.
i just love singing and swinging!

thanks to all who came out
and supported all we love to do
while the full moon shone bright
    in the mid night sky!

It was such an honor and pleasure to play with such a solid "back up" band and Betsy, Danielle, Susan, Lizzie and Jessica all sang beautifully! Thanks to the very supportive audience for coming out to hear us.
